With a Thursday morning deadline looming, the Boston Celtics agreed to send the Cleveland Cavaliers a 2020 second-round draft pick via the Miami Heat to acquire four-time All-Star guard Kyrie Irving and complete the blockbuster trade.

The Celtics resisted the Cavaliers' desire for a first-round pick to compensate the Cavs' reluctance to sign off on Isaiah Thomas' hip injury, and Cleveland finally agreed to consummate the deal late Wednesday night.

Irving is scheduled to be introduced at a news conference in Boston on Friday, league sources said.

These talks had become a game of chicken, with both teams risking the consequences of walking away on a deal that could have short- and long-term consequences for each franchise.

Last week, the Cavaliers and Celtics agreed on a deal that was intended to send Irving to Boston for Thomas, a two-time All-Star, forward Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and an unprotected 2018 first-round draft pick via the Brooklyn Nets.

Cleveland maintained that Boston wasn't fully transparent about the possible length of rehabilitation facing Thomas, who suffered the hip injury in March and was shut down in the Eastern Conference finals. Thomas has been rehabilitating his injury, and he told ESPN on Tuesday that he expected to play this season and believed he would return to an elite level. The Celtics believe they were fully forthcoming in detailing Thomas' injury, sources said.

"There's never been an indication that I wouldn't be back, and there's never been an indication that this is something messing up my career," Thomas told ESPN on Tuesday. "Maybe I am not going to be back as soon this season as everyone wants me to be, but I'm going to be back, and I'm going to be the same player again. No doctor has told me anything different than that."

a second round pick is nothing more than saving face for the Cavs after trying to make a big deal out of this

does anyone value 2nd round picks in the NBA?

Kyrie's health isn't reliable, he goes down and C's have nothing from the trade & will he resign or could they afford him?

I'm thinking they've already agreed to a long term deal OR the C's can match at a minimum

Don't think they pay that price for a one year rental

He has 2 years left on his contract. He isn't a FA after the season.

And yes they will be able to afford him. You think they dealt for him without the goal in mind of re-signing him?

as it stands right now, all the cavs have from the trade are zizic and crowder. the picks have yet to materialize. meanwhile, Cs have one of the best iso scorers in the game who is only 25 years old. everyone keeps raving about the bkn pick when the Cs still have like 4 more draft picks. ainge is the fucking biggest penny pincher of all time. ainge the type of dude to use a 2 for 1 coupon on a 29 cent tuesday taco.

Ehh Cavs did really well too.

Their team was basically on the brink of cratering. Kyrie wanted out, LeBron to LAL rumors were getting louder and louder.

Now atleast the deal gives them a new life, Brooklyn pick could be flipped for an established veteran, Crowder is a big upgrade over Jefferson/Korver who they played huge minutes last year and IT is still a productive player when healthy.

Hard to see them doing better than the haul they got.

If, and it's beginning to appear to be a very big if, Thomas can physically perform at last season's level, the Cavs will be a better team. Yes, better.

And they will be holding a potentially huge draft pick in a year with a couple of potentially transformative players coming into the draft.

I can only think that Thomas' injury will never allow him to be the same player again.

nah, the prognosis is pretty good once he has surgery as far as returning to competitive level
however, he is at a chance of recurrence requiring another surgery

If the Boogie/Anthony Davis experiment doesn't work out the Cavs should flip that Brooklyn pick for Boogie at the trade deadline. Adding Boogie to the roster might just get Lebron to stick around and end his career in Cleveland.(obv they'd have to sign Boogie to the Max).

They should try to trade the pick as soon as they can for an established veteran. When you've got LeBron on your team, you should be trying to win it all rather than have a bullet in the holster like that.

The problem is they will be hesitant to deal the pick for a player if LeBron won't commit to opting in and given he likes to keep his options open, he might be hesitant to do that.

So it will be interesting how that plays out.
