MIAMI (AP) -- For the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the season might begin sooner than expected, thanks to Hurricane Irma.

The NFL is considering moving the Dolphins-Bucs opener in Miami to another site or earlier this week because of the hurricane, a person familiar with the discussions said Monday. The person confirmed the discussions to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the league and teams aren't talking publicly about the options.

Switching the game to Thursday or Friday is being considered, the person said, because Irma could threaten South Florida over the weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT Sunday.

Playing the game at another site Sunday is also being discussed, the person said. The teams share the same bye week in November, but would prefer to avoid moving the game to that weekend, because it would mean both teams would play 16 weeks in a row.

If the game is moved to earlier this week, the decision must be made by Tuesday because of the logistics involved, the person said. The decision will be made by the league with input from the teams, the person said.

"We will monitor the situation throughout the week and remain in close communication with both clubs and local officials," said Michael Signora, vice president of football communications for the NFL.

Dolphins coach Adam Gase said he has received updates on the status of the game but declined to discuss options.

"They tell us when to play and show up," Gase said. "We just kind of wait and see right now."

Miami receiver Kenny Stills said there had been talk among the players about a possible change in the schedule.

"We know the situation, and people are talking about the game being moved," Stills said. "All we can do is get prepared for this game, and when it comes, it comes. If they tell us to play tomorrow, we play tomorrow. I'm good with whatever they got."

Another concern for the Dolphins is potential damage to their stadium. A new canopy added last year was built to withstand a Category 4 hurricane.

They should really just postpone the game until they are sure that their fan base, which just can't skip town, are alive and well.

move it to their common bye week, unfortunate but I think that's better than fucking with their fans

I vote for Thursday. Gives fans a chance to watch the game with plenty of time to gtfo of dodge.

The line tumbled all the way down to 41. 41 is really low with these two teams unless the weather is awful.

I hope the forecast changes, but the weather is looking pretty dicey for Southern Florida. Hurricane tracks are notoriously unpredictable, but I think the league needs to make a decision today.

Game moved to their common bye week. How is someone so incompetent in this high of a position.

In 2005 under the previous commissioner the game was played Friday without hitch. Now we have a team paying 16 straight weeks with a trip to London.

Miami already has a game in London so they probably didn't wanna lose another home game. Purely a $ move.

I don't think it's a bad decision. I don't think they should take a second game away from the home fans (already playing in London) and I don't think they should move it to Thursday or Friday either. That creates other problems for their fans and security and logistics and lots of other stuff on very short notice while it delays employees and fans and public servants from preparing for what appears to be a catastrophic storm.

I think this the best solution. It's grueling for the teams and having the teams start a week later must drive the players crazy but it is what it is. The other teams wouldn't agree to it but why not allow Miami and Tampa to suit up three extra players a week starting week 12 through the end of season. This would reduce injury and fatigue factor.
