Michael Bennett: Cops drew guns on me for 'being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time'

Seattle Seahawks star defensive end Michael Bennett has accused police officers of pointing guns at him and using excessive force during an incident in Las Vegas last month.

Bennett posted a statement on his Twitter account Wednesday, saying that he felt "terrified" and "helpless," and announced that he is considering filing a civil rights lawsuit.

According to Bennett, the incident occurred in the early-morning hours on Aug. 27 after the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight in Las Vegas, when police apprehended him after hearing what sounded like gunshots in a crowded area.

Bennett said officers pointed guns at him "for doing nothing more than simply being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time" and ordered him to lie down on the ground.

Bennett wrote that one officer, with his gun drawn, warned him that he would "blow my f------ head off" if he moved. Another officer jammed his knee into Bennett's back and handcuffed him, according to Bennett.

Bennett said he was placed in a police car before officers confirmed his identity, realized he was not a suspect and released him "without any legitimate justification for the Officers' abusive conduct.

"They apparently realized I was not a thug, common criminal or ordinary black man but Michael Bennett a famous professional football player," he wrote.

Bennett said he has retained John Burris, an Oakland-based civil rights attorney, to investigate the incident and determine his legal options.
Burris released a statement Wednesday saying that Bennett "was unarmed, sober and not involved in any altercations or dispute at the time the police officers arrested and threatened to use deadly force against him."

Bennett, 31, said the incident is an example of the racial inequality that he is protesting by sitting for the national anthem. Bennett sat through the anthem for all four of the Seahawks' preseason games this summer and has said he will continue doing so.

"I have always held a strong conviction that protesting or standing up for justice is just simply, the right thing to do," Bennett wrote. "This fact is unequivocally, without question why before every game, I sit during the national anthem--because equality doesn't live in this country and no matter how much money you make, what job title you have, or how much you give, when you are seen as a 'N-----,' you will be treated that way."

Bennett has been a vocal advocate for former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, the first NFL player to publicly protest during the anthem last season.

Kaepernick, who remains unsigned this season, tweeted his support of Bennett on Wednesday.

"This violation that happened against my Brother Michael Bennett is disgusting and unjust," Kaepernick tweeted. "I stand with Michael and I stand with the people."

The Seahawks have not commented on the alleged incident. Seahawks center Justin Britt also tweeted his support of Bennett.

Justin Britt @JustinBritt68
I stand with you Mike. #Equality https://twitter.com/mosesbread72/status/905430701595652096 …

Britt has stood by Bennett's side with a supportive hand on his shoulder while the defensive end sat on the bench during the anthem before the Seahawks' last three preseason games. Britt began doing that after Bennett sat alone on the bench during the anthem before the preseason opener.

I'm calling bullshit, he's big on this BLM stuff and I think his story has been embellished just a tad.

If you look like a suspect, you can be detained no matter what race or color you are. If a very large black man committed a crime in the vicinity, they're not going to detain some white guy and they're not going to detain a small black guy either. It's just the way it is

Doesn't matter. Shit happens every day. A black guy is the suspect and another black guy eats pavement for it.

Point is if it was a white guy.....do the cops go up to the guy and ask him questions or do they draw guns on him? For me to even ask that question is kinda ridiculous dont you think?

Last week seen a video on here with a white female laying on the ground with a gun.....cop says...."don't get up!" Lady starts to get up....." cop says she's got a gun"..... then waits for her to get all the way up for the cop to say......" don't draw that weapon." Lololololol

Then he shoots her. So she had a gun. Gets off the ground WITH the gun....and then another warning? !?!?!??!?!?!? Don't draw the weapon?!??!?!?!?!?

Lets be serious for a second. Yeah white people are treated exactly like black people. LMFAOOOO

A black person gets off the ground with a gun....they would be shot immediately. There is no debating that.

Lol and guess what....that cop was terminated for that!!!! Lol. At least from the hospital job. His police department put him on leave for that. Which is usually the same punishment when you kill a black person. Shoot Bennett and they might have gotten a raise

Happens to white people too every single day. Report comes into dispatch, cops respond to the scene. If it's a white guy, he/she eats pavement too.

You just don't see it in the news or on tv because your liberal media doesn't want the narrative portrayed in that manner.

I don't watch the news period on tv ever intentionally. If I do it is skimming through channels. I'm a registered independent.

I just gave an example of a video posted on this forum of a white lady with a gun laying on the ground. Cops tell her not to get up with the gun. *She gets up with the gun* cop then says do not draw that weapon. *shw draws the weapon* cop then shoots.

I am not familiar with that process. So they wait for people to draw the gun and get a shot off? Usually it is, if you have a gun and cop tells you to get away from the gun and you don't.....that is grounds for being shot. What I think it is....is cops are a lot more afraid of black people than they are a white female. That's obviously what it is.

I dno why tho. Most black people shoot a gun sideways lol. U not hitting anybody like that. So what are they afraid of? They most of the time outnumber dude.

There isn't a textbook answer to this. The cop has to use the most restraint he/she can given the situation.

The moment they feel their life or the life of another is in immediate danger, they are authorized to use lethal force to stop the threat. Every case is different.

Tell that to Amadou Diallo. The man shot 41 times in NYC by cops in front of his own home becuz they thought he was a suspect. You're right, every case is different. And they choose when they want to be forceful and they choose when they don't want to be.

Also shared a story about a white kid high and drunk who broke into a house I was staying at and the kid pushed a cop and nothing was done. So yeah every case is different and that's the problem. You start assualting cops you need to be put in your place. Period. I don't care what color you are.

A white guy has never been shot and killed by cops as a suspect? It happens to everyone.
