Bill Daly: NHL doesn't request Vegas betting ban on Golden Knights
Emily Kaplan & David Purdum
9/6/17

The NHL did not request for Vegas Golden Knights games to be removed from Nevada's legal sportsbooks, deputy commissioner Bill Daly told ESPN on Wednesday.

The league had 30 days before an event to make the official request to the Nevada Gaming Commission; the Golden Knights open their inaugural season on Oct. 6 against Dallas. The Golden Knights are currently +220 underdogs against the Dallas Stars at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas.

"What we're most interested in is making sure we get equitable treatment with the NFL in terms of how teams are dealt with on the book," Daley told ESPN. "We had discussions both with the club and MGM, with respect to betting around the arena. There may be some steps done in respect to that, but we didn't feel like it was an appropriate time to make the global request."

Nevada Gaming Commission chairman Dr. Tony Alamo confirmed to ESPN on Wednesday that the NHL had not made the request to prohibit betting on Golden Knights' games at the state's regulated sportsbooks.

"Nevada is the safest place on the planet to place a bet on any sport," Alamo said. "I think the NHL sees that and appreciates that."

The Oakland Raiders of the NFL are also relocating to Vegas with a scheduled move in 2020 and will have a similar decision as the NHL.

The NHL and NFL remain plaintiffs in a legal battle over New Jersey's attempt to legalize sports betting at the state's casinos and racetracks. The case has been accepted by the Supreme Court and is expected to be heard late this year.

Bet The Las Vegas Golden Knights All You Want: NHL Won’t Ask Nevada Books To Take Games Off Board
Dustin Gouker
September 6, 2017

Bettors will be able to wager on Las Vegas Knights games in Nevada, as the NHL is not moving to block wagering on the franchise’s games, per ESPN.

Betting on the Golden Knights

The league had up to 30 days before the first official Knights game of the season to make a request to Nevada gaming regulators to prohibit the booking of wagers on Knights games. For now, it appears, any books that want to take action on Knights’ games are free to do so.

The issue had become cloudy when Knights majority owner Bill Foley earlier told ESPN that “we go down on the sports books so you won’t be able to bet on the Golden Knights at some of the local casinos.” It’s still unclear how that comment from Foley could be accurate.

It’s still feasible that games could be taken off at some nearby books, as deputy commissioner Bill Daly alluded to “betting around the arena.” Sportsbooks are available at New York New York and Monte Carlo. Those are two MGM properties just steps from TMobile Arena, where the Knights play their home games.

NHL vs. sports betting

The NHL has been fairly quiet on the issue of legal sports betting in recent years.
Commissioner Gary Bettman, on more than one occasion, has said that he doesn’t think his sport lends itself to sports betting. The NHL also said that the team could sign deals with casinos that feature sportsbooks.
However, it remains a plaintiff in the ongoing New Jersey sports betting case headed to the US Supreme Court.

Regardless, the fact that the NHL is tolerating, if not embracing, regulated betting on Knights games is surely a good sign. If the NHL had asked for Nevada sports betting not to be legal for Knights games, it might have been a setback for the cause of legal sports wagering in the US.

The NBA, meanwhile, appears to be welcoming the owner of Golden Nugget Casinos — which operates sportsbooks — as the new owner of the Houston Rockets. And the NFL is increasingly just fine with gambling, if not sports gambling.

Golden Knights is actually the first game on the board for the NHL. A few props are open too. The Supreme Court, doesn't just hear any case either, they pass on a lot of cases. The fact they are even hearing it, speaks volumes.

I pounded the season point total under 70.5 -110 as soon as it was released at the Westgate. Now at 68.5.

I’m confident of my bet. McPhee has set this team up for building through the draft. They have already stock piled first and second round picks for next year and you can be sure, come trade deadline, the few decent pieces they have will be dumped for more. The team is extremely thin and once injuries occur they have little to fill in.
