Weekend's worst bad beats
Rob Nelsilon
9/11/17

It's very early in the football season, but that doesn't mean that bad beats aren't in midseason form.

Rob Nelson of ESPN Stats & Information revisits the worst ones from the weekend's gambling action.

Thursday

Kansas City Chiefs at New England Patriots

New England team total: Over/under 28.5

If you told those bettors on New England over 28.5 that this game would have 69 combined points, they would have liked their chances. But the Patriots fell just short of that in the first "bad beat" of the NFL season.

The New England "over" certainly got off to a good start -- an opening drive touchdown less than three minutes in put the defending champs up 7-0. The Patriots got it right back after a Kareem Hunt fumble but would eventually turn it over on downs, marking the first of several missed opportunities.

Late in the third quarter, New England led 24-21 and had the ball inside the Kansas City 10-yard line. But after a Tom Brady-to-James White touchdown was called back due to an illegal forward pass, the Pats settled for a field goal. Needing just two more points to hit the over early in the fourth quarter, New England once again turned it over on downs in Kansas City territory. Three punts on their final three possessions would seal the deal for both the Patriots and those who bet them to score over 28.5.

Final score: Chiefs 42, Patriots 27 (Patriots go under team total)

Saturday

Nebraska Cornhuskers at Oregon Ducks

Line: Oregon -10.5

A week after scoring 77 points in a win over Southern Utah, Oregon looked like it might eclipse that output against Nebraska. The Ducks led 42-14 at halftime and were well on their way to another blowout win.

But in a shocking result, Oregon was held scoreless the entire second half while allowing the Cornhuskers to put up 21 points. The Ducks would miss a field goal and turn it over twice after halftime, with the second turnover setting up Nebraska's final score. Mikale Wilbon's touchdown with less than 3 minutes left gave the Cornhuskers the backdoor cover, making Oregon -10.5 a losing bet.

Final score: Oregon 42, Nebraska 35 (Nebraska covers)

Boise State Broncos at Washington State Cougars

Line: O/U 58

Those on the under had to be feeling great entering the fourth quarter of this one. With Boise State leading 17-10, the 27 combined points were 31 short of the closing over/under. Both teams were also down to their backup quarterbacks, theoretically making a high-scoring fourth quarter even less likely.

Or that was the conventional thinking.

The final 15 minutes of regulation consisted of two defensive touchdowns, a fumbled punt and 35 combined points. By the time the captains met for the overtime coin toss, the total had already gone over and those who bet the under were done with football for the night.

Final score: Washington State 47, Boise State 44 in two overtimes (game goes over)

Sunday

Pittsburgh Steelers at Cleveland Browns

First half line: Browns +6.5

The Steelers were held to 9 rushing yards in the first half and didn't even run a play in Cleveland territory until after the two-minute warning. And that is what made those on the Browns to cover the first half line even more frustrated.

After allowing the Steelers to score a touchdown on a blocked punt, DeShone Kizer's first career touchdown tied the game late in the first quarter. The score remained at 7-7 until Pittsburgh's final drive of the half. In what would be the play that marked the beginning of the end for those on Cleveland, Antonio Brown caught a tipped Ben Roethlisberger pass and turned it into a 50-yard gain. Five plays later, Roethlisberger found Jesse James for a touchdown with less than minute left before halftime. Chris Boswell's extra point put the Steelers up 14-7, giving those on the Browns a half-point loss.

Halftime score: Steelers 14, Browns 7 (Steelers cover)

I had OR, was counting that as a win at halftime, silly me

In the third quarter of the Pats game when they were winning 27-21 and lots of time remaining, I was pissed I didn't pull the trigger on the Pats over the TT. Got lucky there I suppose

The worst beat was when Philly called a TO up 19-17 when they were lined up to go for it on 4th and 1, then decided to kick the FG, ending any shot of the game landing on 2 and me busting both sides.
