FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- When 17 New England Patriots players knelt during the national anthem before Sunday's game against the Houston Texans, it sparked a strong reaction from a player who was part of the franchise's first three Super Bowl championships.

"As a guy that's been there and helped set up the Patriot Way so they can walk in there and do what they do, it's beyond disheartening," offensive tackle Matt Light told the Boston Herald. "It's the first time I've ever been ashamed to be a Patriot. And I promise you I'm not the only one."

Light, who played for the Patriots from 2001 to 2011 and appeared in 155 regular-season games (153 starts), was present at Sunday's game. He told the Herald he was surprised that players knelt because of the detail that head coach Bill Belichick puts into all situations.

"Nobody can force anybody to do anything in a situation like that. If he chooses to do it, he's going to do it," Light told the Herald. "But I'm going to tell you this much, with the amount of preparation and attention to detail, and all the things that happen in that organization, I'm really surprised that it wasn't dealt with so it didn’t get to that point."

Former Patriots receiver Troy Brown, who played for the team from 1993 to 2007, struck a more empathetic tone during his work as a postgame analyst on Comcast Sports Net. Brown said he was disappointed that fans booed players who knelt.

"I was kind of surprised after the President said what he had to say that they would boo the players who took a knee. Maybe they don't understand that this is in protest to what he had to say about one or two other players on their team and other teams who took a knee because he thought there was some racial inequality in this country," Brown said.

After the game, when asked about his players' reaction to the national anthem, Belichick said, "I'm just going to talk about the game. I'll deal with that later."

Light can say it because he is retired. Others cannot disagree or they will be labeled a racist or Uncle Tom.

the first time any Patriot has participated in the protest

Belichick "I'll deal with that later", an interesting choice of words.

I'm thinking he's pissed, and maybe 20 people participated because they think there's strength in numbers. Maybe their behavior and their concerns about his reaction was a distraction for them yesterday

this stuff is getting fucked up

I love the fact that the Patriot fans booed them loudly, and New England is one of the most liberal regions in the country

Belichick needs to walk into Kraft's office and demand this shit stop. If Kraft refuses, then quit.

Why not? What does he have to prove at this point in his career?

Anyway, it's all academic as the NFL will be dealt a fatal blow after Tom Brady retires.

No doubt about it, the seeds of destruction have been planted.

I hope he cuts a few people, then see what happens

If they do it again, cut some more and keep cutting until the fucking idiots become concerned with losing their privileged life

What's positive about this ???

Maybe I could post something like NFL & NBA players take a Stand for the Homeless in our Country ... or they take a stand for the violent crime rate that's up
this Year .... Thanks to Chicago , Los Angeles, Dallas, San Jose and Baltimore

Maybe they can take a Stand on all those Young Black kids killing other Black Kids. THAT would be a GREAT story to post !

I understand why they want to protest .. I just don't understand WHY they have to use National anthem to do it.
I would be FINE with them doing it BEFORE the Anthem, I would be even Fine with them doing it at Half Time... but I'm Not fine with them doing it
the way they are doing it.

I've said this before... Take out an AD ... a Banner or Billboard. Buy a spot on TV if you want to get the Word out.

But to ME, doing it while the National anthem is playing is Pissing on America ! and the people that Fought for it.

I hear you. But take a look at what is going on. Do you think you get this type of reaction or stir with a billboard ad or a commercial? Whether you hate kaep or disagree with what he did. He went about it in the most forward way I have ever witnessed anyone try to make a difference about something. You can call them lazy or whatever. But like I mentioned if you do this on your own time, away from football. ....you will be eaten alive for not focusing on football. They are almost forced to act on this platform if they want to really be heard.

Plus when Trump comes out and calls them all sons of bitches. Then what do you think will happen? It's going to piss people off and make them sit/kneel even if they had no intention to do it before.

One thing you don't do is go after sports. I am honestly surprised on a sports betting forum so many people ACT like they are siding with politics over sports here. Amazing to me.
