The BYU Cougars will be hoping to halt a three-game losing streak when they visit the Utah State Aggies Friday night. BYU is coming off consecutive setbacks at the hands of LSU, Utah, and Wisconsin. The Cougars have had much the tougher schedule so their blowout losses look worse than they actually are. The Aggies have alternated losses and wins, most recently destroying a bad San Jose State squad last weekend.
BYU has failed to cover the spread in their last five games, but that trend will not continue this Friday night. Yeah, they were crushed in their last game and Utah State is coming off a blowout win, but BYU still has a stronger team and they will run the ball well in this game winning, snapping their three-game losing streak, and covering the spread. The Cougars are undermanned on offense and they are going up against a Utah State defense that is both confident and capitalizing on opportunities. On the other side of the ball, the Aggies’ offense erupted–bigtime–at San Jose State’s expense.
BYU is 4-1 ATS in its last five against the Mountain West Conference, 4-1 ATS in its last five on the road, and 10-4-1 ATS in its last 15 after scoring fewer than 20 points in its previous outing. The Aggies are 5-16 ATS in their last 21 overall, 1-4 ATS in their last five at home, 3-7 ATS in their last 10 non-conference contests, 0-7 ATS in their last seven following a win, and 2-7 ATS in their last nine on fieldturf. Don’t be surprised if those trends continue. My personal power ratings indicate a advantage to Utah State with a number of 13-14 on a neutral field, but I need to see Utah State play well against a decent team before I’m willing to put my money behind them.
