so if you ever need to drive >200 miles you're screwed ... :neenee:

After nearly a century of building vehicles powered by fossil fuels, General Motors -- one of the world's largest automakers -- announced Monday that the end of GM producing internal combustion engines is fast approaching.
The acceleration to an all-electric future will begin almost immediately, with GM releasing two new electric models next year and another 18 by 2023.
At a media event at GM's technical campus in Warren, Mich., Monday, Mark Reuss, the company's chief of global product development, said transition will take time, but the course has been set.
"General Motors believes in an all-electric future," Reuss said. "Although that future won't happen overnight, G.M. is committed to driving increased usage and acceptance of electric vehicles."

</aside>Reuss avoided naming the particular year that the auto giant will cease producing gas and diesel vehicles, noting that the company is too large estimate, according to USA Today.
GM finished 2016 as the world's third-largest auto-seller, breaking previous company records with 10 million vehicles sold, the company said in a news release.
The automaker said arriving at a "zero emissions future" will require a two-pronged approach -- battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell electric depending vehicles.
At Monday's event, Fast Company reported, officials unveiled three concepts for reporters: "a sporty crossover, a larger wagon or SUV and a tall, boxy pod car that looked like a people-mover for cities."

</aside>GM also introduced a fuel cell powered, heavy-duty truck with two electric motors known as SURUS, which stands for "Silent Utility Rover Universal Superstructure."
GM's foray into the electric marketplace has already resulted in resounding success, with the Chevy Bolt being named Motor Trend's 2017 Car of the Year and the 2017 North American Car of the Year. The Bolt boasts a 240-mile battery range on a single charge and costs $37,500 before tax incentives. That range places the vehicle well above the Nissan Leaf (107 miles on single charge) and slightly above Tesla's Model 3 (220 miles before incentives).
As GM commits to electric innovation, the company will compete with an increasingly crowded marketplace. In recent months, Tesla unveiled the company's first mass market electric vehicle, joining companies like Ford, Volvo, Nissan, Aston Martin, and Jaguar Land Rover, all of whom are vying for market space.
On Monday, Ford announced plans to create a group tasked with developing fully electric cars known as "Team Edison." Sherif Marakby, Ford's head of electrification and autonomous vehicles told Automotive News that the company is on pace to produce 13 electrified vehicles over the next five years.
"We see an inflection point in the major markets toward battery electric vehicles," Marakby said. "We feel it's important to have a cross-functional team all the way from defining the strategy plans and implementation to advanced marketing."

[h=1]What is U.S. electricity generation by energy source?[/h] In 2016, about 4.08 trillion kilowatthours (kWh) of electricity[SUP]1 [/SUP]were generated at utility-scale facilities in the United States.[SUP]2[/SUP] About 65% of this electricity generation was from fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, petroleum, and other gases)

GM is headed for their 2nd bankruptcy in a decade only
this time there won't be a taxpayer bailout.

It is hard for most people to accept change........long term electric cars are the wave of the future.

Fun fact if the United States put solar on just 1/3 of the land that is currently in CRP (so we are paying someone to not farm it)......using today's technology......we could produce 100% of the amount of electricity we consume. It would also give that land 25 year of "rest" and make it better farm land in the future.

Says it will stop in the near future. But declines to specify a date. Volvo that said they would stop making new models by 2019.

Tough to say exactly when the inflection point will be, but sooner than later.

Imagine the future.

We may be able to adjust to electric, hydrogen, or whatever kind of vehicles we have to choose from.

But oil & fuel will be critical to countries' militaries & who the powers are...

Volvo isn't stopping anything. I'm currently building their first US Plant. They will be building a hybrid SUV XC90 here by 2021,though.

Across the pond, they come up with crazy regulations all the time to scare people, and they're full of it.About the same with these electrics...

what, you're not gonna pay $40K for a car that can't go more than 200 miles without taking a 12 hour break?

Those reasons are why the market is so small today but given the improvement in cost/quality of components, the cost quality/curve is going to continue to bend towards EVs. Similar to a Moores Law.

They will be selling ice vehicles for awhile though. Big changes like that look like they happen faster in a historical sense but 10 years is still a long time when your actually living in the time period.

nah, $750k...available in 2019. just keep it within a 1 hour radius so you can get back home @)

The Genovation GXE is a re-engineered Z06 Corvette in which the company fitted a 44kWh battery pack allowing for a range of about 130 miles on a single charge.

The latest version of their all-electric Corvette prototype reached a speed of 209 mph.

Electric vehicles are known for their impressive acceleration, but less so for their potential top speed, which is what makes this achievement interesting.

The vehicle will be offered with either a 7-speed manual transmission or a paddle shifting 8-speed automatic, which can definitely help reach higher top speeds than single speed vehicles – like most EVs available today.

As we reported last year, Genovation plans to sell the vehicle, called Genovation GXE, for $750,000.

The company is going for exclusivity with only a limited quantity of 75 vehicles and they promised that each vehicle will be unique because they will involve the customers in the individual design and finishing process.

If you want one though, you need to have a lot of trust in the startup since they require to submit a deposit of $250,000 and they don’t expect to ship the vehicle until Q4 of 2019 after a 2-year design period and 1 year build time.

This is why they should have let them go bankrupt the first time.

they still filed for bankruptcy, after the bailout money appeased the unions

This is idiotic.
Pretending you can forecast market conditions (at some point) is so dumb it is comical.

I am never, ever, going to buy an electric vehicle. So if GM is not going to produce anything else, I'll be done with GM.

So say goodbye to the Silverado, Tahoe, and Suburban.

Not an expert, but those seem to be the most popular GM products on the roads in my part.

Going to be an interesting strategy crippling your best sellers
