Does anyone have the scoop on if the companies who do background checks for employment actually call on your previous employers and check employment dates? Or do they just mostly make sure your not a criminal and stuff. In the past I've always made up dates for employment because I can never remember the actual dates. Never seemed to be a problem as no one has ever said anything. This new company I'm getting on with uses Sterling to check background. It may be more extensive idk. Anyone know about this?

Its buisness by buisness. Find out the places you want to apply to, then google the buisness name and X (type of drug test, criminal check, ref check) Typically a former employer will only verify dates. Legality varies state by state if you dont put down a specifix person as a refernce.

Background... Ive done hiring and firing for 2 different large corps.

bourn .. i am great at giving references.. my strategy is i brag on and on about myself about how great i am .. and then i make a personal promise that you will not embarrass me and if you do to call me but that will never happen.. i also tell them to please keep me in the loop .. that sort of assumptive technique plus the fact that they will be beyond impressed that you have associates and colleagues as great as me .. will get you the job.. works ever time.. theres more to it but thats a general description of what i do .. i only need about 2 minutes of a backstory for us to get on same page about how you got on my radar

every other reference will go on and on with the same old lame , suspect , bias praise about how reliable you are blah blah blah..

i will talk all about myself and all my achievements , my vast resources and how you came on my radar with a few tidbits of what i see in you .. but more time will be spent of me letting them into our little heart to heart convo about how i am putting my name on the line for you , what i expect from young the way that expect you to behave and perform on the job,,, that the last thing you would want to do is let me down after i have spoken up on your behalf.. that is why i demand that they keep me in the loop in regards to your progress within the org ( they never do but its a very strong suggestion on my part)

that conversation is referred to as " the birds and bees " .. i tell them you and i discussed the birds and bees .. theyre heads spin like a top..

i tell them that at this time i do not have a position for you within my own organization.. but i would like to see you get some seasoning and monitor
your progress in the meantime

You are talking about personal references, not employment references. Previous employers will give only dates of hire and dates they left employment...nothing else.

Employers will do background check and social media checks but you are probably busted if you give erroneous dates of employment because that is about the only thing that they will verify unless it is a small company with no HR department.

Personal references are different but for reasons metro mentions, social media and background checks are more important. Most employers know when smoke is being blown up their ass with personal references.

I have a service check the following on any new hire

1) criminal background check (7 years of county/state/federal)
2) SSN trace (make sure they have a legit ssn)
3) sex offender list
4) employment verification which includes verifying dates of employment
5) degree verification

sterling is a big service and will certainly check dates, at least for L7 years of jobs

You talking about Exact dates ?/ like you forgot which Month you started or ended ? or Years ?

I would think if you are off by a month or so, it wouldn't be that bad of a lie

Yeah I'm talking about actual dates. I don't write employment dates down like hire on and leave date so it's always a guesstament. In the past I have made the dates line up with no gaps. No one has ever had a problem with my job history and I hope that continues. I will know soon enough as I've just submitted my work history with application. Had to do last 7 years of residence as well. Pain in the butt trying to remember all of that.

i doubt it unless your employment is directly tied to post-graduate training then yes your dates have to be accurate and they would ask you if/why there are any gaps

Maybe I should call them and tell them I have a wrong date for a job and just put unemployed during that time. Probably look better than a wrong date? I'm stressed out over it because it's a really good position with more money that Ive ever made. Ughhh what to do. But that might make them look even harder.

I do most of the hiring for my company. We will call previous employer. It's amazing how many people lie on their resume. It's not make or break if the dates are a little off. A couple months here or there etc

We do criminal background check but NOT credit check. We feel that is way overboard. Some of my best guys, particularly in sales, couldn't manage their finances if their lives depended on it. Could sell ketchup popsicle to a lady with white gloves tho.

As long as it's nothing crazy. Like you were unemployed for a year but said you weren't. I would just leave it be

Used to do recruiting work.

Some companies were adamant about checking dates, others not so much.

I believe though after 7 years or so the lines are blurred. Companies say their records are 'on microfilm' and nobody presses that issue any further.

The further way, the less it matters.
