The grieving dad of an Army corporal killed in Afghanistan said that President Trump promised to send him a personal check for $25,000 — but didn’t follow through until Wednesday, a new report said.
Chris Baldridge, the father of 22-year-old Army Cpl. Dillon Baldridge, told The Washington Post that Trump called him at his home in Zebulon, NC, weeks after his son and two other soldiers were gunned down by an Afghan police officer on June 10.
“He said, ‘I’m going to write you a check out of my personal account for $25,000,’ and I was just floored,” Baldridge told the paper.
“I could not believe he was saying that, and I wish I had it recorded because the man did say this. He said, ‘No other president has ever done something like this,’ but he said, ‘I’m going to do it.’ ”
But the check never arrived, though the cash-strapped construction worker said he did get a letter of condolence from the president.
White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said after the story broke that the check, about four months after it was promised, was now in the mail — and slammed the media for reporting the story.
“The check has been sent. It’s disgusting that the media is taking something that should be recognized as a generous and sincere gesture, made privately by the President, and using it to advance the media’s biased agenda,” she said.
The check was mailed on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.
