Michael Bennett: Protest talks should wait until Kaepernick resolved

The NFL’s owners and players are in the midst of discussions about how to handle protests during the national anthem moving forward. But one prominent voice in the entire story believes talks are pointless without focusing on one key aspect: why Colin Kaepernick, who began the entire protest movement, remains unemployed.

“I think the first step to even being able to even have a conversation is making sure that Colin Kaepernick gets an opportunity to play in the NFL,” said the Seattle Seahawks’ Michael Bennett, per ESPN. “I think before we even negotiate anything about whether we sit, whether we stand, it should be a negotiation about opening up the doors for Colin Kaepernick and giving him an opportunity again, because I feel like through everything, that’s been lost. All of us are having an opportunity to be able to speak to our employers, but to think about the guy who started everything not to be able to have a voice at this moment, it just doesn’t seem very right to me.”

Players have contended that Kaepernick is at least as talented as the backups on NFL rosters. But there’s an argument to be made that Kaepernick, as a quarterback, isn’t worth the blowback his signing would draw from fans and anti-protest critics. The problem at hand is that teams aren’t conceding that point publicly, hiding behind either a dismissal of Kaepernick’s football skills or simple silence. That’s why Kaepernick has filed a grievance against the NFL, accusing the league’s owners of collusion.

Bennett also took issue with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ decree that players who sit for the anthem wouldn’t play, and Bennett invoked some provocative imagery to get his point across.

“It reminded me of the Dred Scott case: You’re property, so you don’t have the ability to be a person first,” he said, referencing an 1857 Supreme Court decision involving a slave. “I think that in this generation, I think that sends the wrong message to young kids and young people all across the world that your employer doesn’t see you as a human being, they see you as a piece of property, and if that’s the case, then I don’t get it. I just don’t get why you don’t see us as human beings first.”

Bennett’s Seahawks are in New York this weekend to play the Giants. Yes, there are still football games happening.

So the Protest is about Kap not having a Job ... I Guess

I've never heard of a slave making $15M a year or a slave who just bought a second home in Hawaii for $4M.

As a matter of fact, I didn't know slaves had a choice to quit working if they wanted, got paid, protested or collectively bargained for things they didn't like. Slaves could do all this?

This has to be the worst analogy in history.

Ray Rice doesn't have a job either. Should they protest until he's employed again?

The Seahawks should immediately cut him. Terminate his contract and release him from the plantation. Be free Michael. Be free.

MBennett , you are one of the dumbest motherfuckers to talk. First off, comparing yourself to a slave??? You have a $15 million salary this year, if that’s slavery, sign me up!!! Even for 1/10 that salary. Then comparing you to any real slavery, is beyond ridiculous! Oh, also, didn’t you also lie about the Vegas incident that you were profiled because you were black?? Seriously shut the fuk up and I hope you quit or get fired from your “slave” job!!

This a good idea. Please direct your nearest liberal challenge minded to football stadiums protesting the release of these slaves.

Well, it's difficult to have a QB that can't take a snap under center for one, read a defense very well, runs at the first sign of pressure, etc...

He is nothing special and why would a team bring n someone who can't run their offense?

How can you have two different offenses, one for each QB? That makes no sense...

Michael Bennett is about as ignorant as someone can be.
He is just totally clueless and obviously racist and has zero integrity like most of these NFl players

He hit a female in the head with a closed fist. What are you even talking about?

The fact that you even compared Ray rices incident to Kaepernick shows how lost you are in all of this.

Fucking wow. That's the issue right there. Is you consider standing up/kneeling/protesting for black people the same thing as hitting a female and knocking her out.

Sick bro. Sick.

Everyone assigns different values to things - he puts a huge value on this country - the flag and anthem being the biggest symbols of the country - that's why he feels this way - reality is he is not alone - lot's of Americans feel this way - you and I would be speaking German right now if not for people that had his values - I'm not knocking you at all but I'm certain you would never understand the way a lot of Americans feel - you assign a lot of value to Kapernick not being able to make 10 million plus per year

Lol. You're not knocking me at all but say I don't know how Americans feel when I am an American. That's knocking someone.

I don't care how much he gets paid. That bothers you apparently. Not me. It doesn't bother me if he doesn't get a shot at this point. But he is good enough to get one. It's now at the point where people are looking ahead and are tired of hearing "why not Kaeperknick? " and I get that.

Michael Bennett is stubborn and wont let this go.

But to compare Kaepernicks incident and say it is AS BAD as what ray rice did.....says everything about the person who says that outlandish shit.

Kaeperknick might as well of knocked out Roger Goodell's wife then.....he might still be in the league. Kneeling is worse.

Seems to me that the and the players who kneel are saying the NFl owes Kaepernick a job or they are racist. And allow us to take a knee or you are racist. If this affects the NFL(and it does) they have every right to make a rule that everyone stand or fire the players. Just get rid of the anthem for sports. Easy solution. It serves no purpose anyway. They don't owe these guys endless millions of dollars.......especially at their expense. They won't let this go because they know throwing out claims of racism will highly likely get them their way. People get fired for what they do on their off time in the real world let alone negativity on the job. As long as they claim they do it to fight injustice they believe they are to be treated special and allowed to do it. pffffftt

Everybody has known how much the NFL has lied to the public. They allow violent offenders back into the NFL all of the time. People who drink and drive and kill someone. But this shit is the breaking point.

So what are your values about women being beaten? About being lied to? About killing someone while drinking and driving.

Are your values of this country more important than those real life issues? You are fucking sick in the head then. The war fucked up your head. Mostly lost souls go to the military and when you come out you are crazier than when you went in. I appreciate those who serve, but don't try to push this "I served so it means America comes first." Fuck that shit.

Well, what you say has some merit - I do care what Kap gets paid - anything over the state's minimum wage and I will have smoke coming out of my ears

It's not what he actually did - its the fucken circus he has created - nothing to do with race - he is just simply bad for business - he's a distraction - Tebow became a distraction too (though Kapernick is a better QB)

The two situations are the same only in both were in the league but now both are now out of the league but both want back in the league. The similarities end there.

why should they get rid of the National Anthem at Ballgames ??

Shit they got rid of the pledge of allegiance in School, now take away something else from us Americans ??

and they are talking about getting rid of Christopher Columbus statues or others

Maybe we should change the American Flag while they are at it
