Tipping contractors?

So, we're having some work done on our house because we're moving and want to make sure it's in decent shape for tenants. Today we had a grout and caulking guy over. The job was $780. I noticed my wife had taken $60 out of my wallet as she was writing the check. I quickly took the money from the table and put it back in my wallet. She just gave me a stare and gave the guy his check. She was upset with me after he left saying she wanted to give the guy the $60 as a tip. I told her we would go broke tipping all the contractors like that. I'm questioning how many other people tip contractors like that? I swear, it just seems like we've become a tip happy society. At what point did it become necessary to tip people for doing their job?

I agree no reason to tip he aint the paper boy . 780.00 to grout and caulk sounds like that 60 bucks would have payed for all his materials. I have a pool construction and service company , some of my customers like to tip my guys after laborday however its not a one shot deal goes with the service industry.
You payed a contracted price . When i visit NYC i always notice people tipping for everything kind of crazy.

I have never tipped a contractor. I would pay promptly, often times in cash

I also send them new business

I've never even heard of tipping Contractors. Seems like a ridiculous concept to me. Agreed upon price is what gets paid if work is acceptable. Impossible for me to imagine that Contractors expect to get tipped and/or that they do get tipped on anything resembling a routine basis. I'd be shocked if I found out Contractors were getting tipped, on a regular basis.

I tipped the last dude who painted 60% of our interior $200.
That was only because with tip it was still much cheaper than other quotes

I get tipped quite often. It's usually only 20 bucks. Gotta ask though, how much grouting and caulking did he do to charge that much?

if it's a half day kind of job i typically offer food and drink, and if they decline i give them at least 10 each so they can get something decent for lunch

that being said, i think it's nice that your wife thought he did a good enough job worth tipping extra
tipping certainly isn't obligatory or expected on contracted jobs, but having a "never tip" attitude is too extreme imo *shrug* gotta have some leeway in life and sixty bucks isn't worth getting your wife mad anyways

I've tipped the cable/satellite guy & ppl who have done work for me at home on the side.

But a contractor, no. You're lucky to get it done right & not backcharges to begin with...

I was referring to the service side of my business. "the weekly maintenance typically runs from memorial day when pools are open through labor day when we close them. Out of 200 customers less then 10 percent tip . Like i said this is on the service side never on the construction side .
