Recently released quarterback Brian Hoyer signed with the New England Patriots on Wednesday, but not before the Green Bay Packers made an attempt to get him first.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Packers "tried to steal" Hoyer before he eventually signed a three-year deal with the Patriots.

The San Francisco 49ers released Hoyer on Tuesday after trading a second-round pick to the Patriots for Jimmy Garappolo. The Patriots signed him Wednesday to replace Garappolo as Tom Brady's backup.

It appears the Packers made a legitimate attempt to add Hoyer to Mike McCarthy's quarterback room in Green Bay.

Just two weeks ago, McCarthy was adamant he had who he needed at quarterback in Brett Hundley and Joe Callahan, two players with multiple years of experience with the Packers. Interest in Hoyer suggests the Packers would be willing to upgrade the room if the right player became available.
Hoyer, 32, started six games for the 49ers this season. He threw four touchdowns and four interceptions, with a completion percentage of 58.0 and a passer rating of 74.1. The 49ers benched him in favor of rookie C.J. Beathard.

The Packers last saw Hoyer in 2016 when he was a member of the Chicago Bears. Hoyer broke his arm in the first half of Chicago's 26-10 loss in Green Bay.
With Aaron Rodgers currently on injured reserve, the Packers have Hundley and Callahan on the active roster at quarterback and rookie Jerod Evans on the practice squad. Hundley will start on Monday night against the Detroit Lions.

Surprised he wants to go to NE where the chances of him ever starting are pretty low.

Hoyer isn't a long-term solution for anyone but he is better than some of the starters in the league. Look at the teams he has played for, Browns/9ers/Bears and Texans. And besides SF, he did OK in every stop before flaming out. He's a very good backup and a decent short-term starter for a lot of teams. They say backup QB is the best job in the world but I'm surprised he wouldn't wanna try to go to a Green Bay or Denver or Arizona or Jacksonville and get another crack at starting.

Think he's just accepted his roll as a backup, might want a chance at a ring and the Packers are just looking for a short term guy to begin with

The Patriots need a legit backup, might have better long term prospects
