Through his uncanny portrayals of Donald Trump on the US comedy institution that is Saturday Night Live, Alec Baldwin has become one of the most prolific faces of “the resistance” -- a major liberal voice for a divided America buried under conservative political dominance. But this is also something of a disaster, Baldwin arguably being one of the least helpful figures to become the face of anything, let alone celebrity liberalism.
The past week has been a particularly rough one for Baldwin. The 30 Rock star has not only faced backlash for comments made in a Los Angeles Times piece about his friend and frequent collaborator James Toback, one of the film industry power players to face a litany of sexual assault allegations of late, but also for a speech in which he confessed to having bullied women during his career.
Speaking at a Paley Center dinner honouring his career in film and television, Baldwin said, “I certainly have treated women in a very sexist way. I’ve bullied women. I’ve overlooked women. I’ve underestimated women. Not as a rule.
“From time to time, I’ve done what a lot of men do, which is... when you don’t treat women the same way you treat men. You don’t.”

Long time observers of Baldwin will not find this admission surprising. Particularly in light of repeated homophobic slurs and some very public displays of anger. Then there was the infamous audio recording leaked to TMZ in 2007 in which Baldwin was heard angrily screaming at his daughter Ireland, then 12.
