This is for all NHL games, regular and postseason, from the beginning of the league in 1918 through yesterday, 2017-11-03, when I pulled the data.
I scraped the data from Hockey Reference and used a simple jet color scale. Plotted in log and linear scales - the log scale gives you a better sense of the data.
As you would expect, most games are relatively low scoring, with the most common score being 3-2 (about 10% of games).
# games with winner: 52883, # tie games: 5754
Winning score - mean: 4.257, min: 1, max: 16
Losing score - mean: 1.908, min: 0, max: 9
Tie score - mean: 2.661, min: 0, max: 8
Goal diff - mean: 2.118, min: 0, max: 15
Tools - python 2.x along with Beautiful Soup, numpy, and matplotlib
