UNC sneaks past NCAA
October 23, 2017

UNC'S GET-OUT-OF-JAIL-FREE CARD FROM THE NCAA--PART I

We’ve taken plenty of shots (mostly deserving, we think) at the national sports media over the years. But we finally must admit to some satisfaction at the reaction of the majority of those who cover the games in regard to the NCAA’s recent ruling (or non-ruling) regarding the academic fraud investigation at North Carolina, as outlined in depth in last month’s “Give It To ‘Em With the Bark On” piece.

Indeed, from this point forward, “Tar Heel-gate” should be viewed as the demarcation point for legitimacy in the sports media; the handful of those who, perhaps with a desire to maintain access and good relations with Roy Williams, or maybe in hopes of one day getting an audience with the most famous UNC alum of all, Michael Jordan, chose to defend and even proclaim vindication for the Tar Heels after the NCAA conclusion, should be forever dismissed as serious journalists, or labeled as useless sycophants. On the other hand, kudos for the vast majority of those who channeled their inner Howard Cosell and decided to “tell it like it is” and condemn UNC and the NCAA's recent ruling.

Before we go much further, a quick reminder should be in order for those who might have been paying more attention to the opening of the NHL season, or perhaps the English Premier League, the past couple of weeks. On October 13, the NCAA handed down its final decision on the North Carolina scandal and effectively decided it couldn’t mete punishment for the admitted academic fraud because Chapel Hill made sure to offer various “paper courses” in its School of Afro-American Studies to the student body at-large. The NCAA ruled that “while student athletes likely benefited from the courses, so did the general student body. Additionally, the record did not establish that the university created and offered the courses as part of a systemic effort to benefit only student athletes.”

Never mind that, per capita at least, the courses were overloaded with Tar Heel football and basketball players, and that, among other violations, many received no-show grades and credit for classwork never undertaken. Thus, despite overwhelming evidence of academic fraud, the NCAA’s hands were effectively tied because the courses couldn’t be solely tied to the athletic department. Which also effectively confirms the NCAA as powerless in response to those who know how to manipulate the system, as did Chapel Hill; the governing body cannot decide what and how subjects are taught. If a member school wants to offer a major in basket-weaving, it’s the school’s prerogative, not the NCAA’s. As long as the majors/courses were not offered solely for athletes, the NCAA, apparently, is outside of its jurisdiction and has to effectively dismiss itself from any review.

That sort of toothlessness was echoed by SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, who led the NCAA’s investigative panel on the North Carolina case. “NCAA policy is clear,” said Sankey. “The NCAA defers to its member schools to determine whether academic fraud occurred and, ultimately, the panel is bound to making decisions within the rules set by the membership.”

Which, some suggested, must have caused Rick Pitino and his staffers, and those at Louisville who just lost their jobs in part related to a sex scandal, to wonder why they didn’t offer the hookers to the student body at-large, and not just Card hoopsters and potential recruits? After all, the NCAA’s logic, or illogic, in the Chapel Hill ruling could, in a roundabout way, potentially have spared the ‘Ville as well...only if the Card hoops staff had used the Chapel Hill approach and just made the transgressions available to everyone on campus. No? Why not? If only they knew at Louisville!

(We and others we have consulted, however, suspect there was also likely an element of practicality to the ruling by the NCAA, which knew that Chapel Hill was “lawyered up” to the hilt to fight and would have dragged the governing body through the federal courts in protest. Minus a limitless budget, the NCAA might have simply made a business decision that spared it millions in legal fees, as UNC was prepared to drive an armored tank through the loophole if necessary to spare its 2005 & 2009 basketball championship banners and prevent it from further punishment.)

Meanwhile, by us, at least, the only worthwhile development to come from the ruling was how much of the sports media and academia has responded, almost en masse, to the NCAA’s effective get-out-of-jail-free card to the Tar Heels. A similar incredulous response echoed across the landscape in the wake of the NCAA’s Carolina ruling.

With the conclusion of the investigation that covered nearly two decades of the “paper classes,” the NCAA “exhausted the last available measure of accountability for what was arguably the most pervasive academic fraud at a major research university in at least a generation,” wrote Jack Stripling, of The Chronicle of Higher Education. The academic and athletic leaders of the university “were largely unscathed by a scandal that mostly implicated lower-level employees.”

Others, like James Warren of the Poynter Institute, pointed out the obvious inferences that can be drawn from UNC’s scandal and the NCAA’s ruling. “The university’s defense was to both concede the specifics and maintain these weren’t fraudulent classes. They were part of the regular curriculum, it claimed, meaning the NCAA didn’t really have jurisdiction,” said Poynter. “Thus, quite apart from having any cleansing effect, according to Dan Kane (investigative reporter for the Raleigh News & Observer who did much of the original “dig” of the story), this could be blueprint for future cheating, especially when one takes into account the university history of stonewalling as facts dribbled out (Kane says it’s now even installing software so it will know, for example, if any suspicious professor wants to check the transcript of a “student-athlete”). Just say dubious, non-convening classes for jocks are part of the curriculum.”

“If ever there was a case of academic fraud, North Carolina would have to be the poster child—the longevity and the outrageous behavior to keep athletes eligible through systematic fraud,” said Gerald Gurney, a professor at the University of Oklahoma and past president of the Drake Group, which seeks to reform college athletics. “And it leads one to the absolute conclusion that this finding sanctions academic fraud among our institutions for the purpose of keeping athletes eligible.”

Include Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports as another who wondered what was going on at the NCAA. “If you can’t hit a school for the infraction that strikes most deeply at the mission of higher education, what good are you?,” said Forde.

Dan Wetzel, the decorated Yahoo Sports columnist whose prized work, Death to the BCS, received a glowing review on these pages several years ago, gladly joined the condemnation crowd, calling called UNC’s argument “perhaps the most outlandish defense in NCAA infractions history.”

Wetzel was just getting started. “The Tar Heels went full (Jerry) Tarkanian and constructed an argument that wasn’t technically against NCAA rules because no one imagined any school would ever dare employ it,” said Wetzel. “In perhaps the most outlandish defense in NCAA infractions history, the school acknowledged that the classes that were taken were essentially bankrupt of any kind of teaching, learning or supervision...but that was perfectly OK with them. To defend the basketball team, the university had to claim it wasn’t really a university.

“Welcome to the Age of Tarkanianism, a complete rejection of the NCAA to the point where Carolina not only isn’t ashamed of academic fraud, it’s practically celebrating it,” Wetzel continued. “By doing so, and since regular students also took the class, they didn’t violate NCAA rules. Sure, they (those at UNC) took a shotgun to their academic credibility, but, hey, those championship banners get to stay. The truth is, alums probably care more about hoops anyway.

“UNC was playing chess against the NCAA’s checkers. That was damn impressive, true Tark-level trolling. Carolina even changed its argument for the NCAA. When the school was in front of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, which accredits it as an actual university, it declared that no-show, no-professor, no-work classes were wrong. Now, though, the classes weren’t fraud. They were fine.

“Bless UNC for it,” concluded Wetzel. “Bless it for being unapologetically shameless. Bless it for not just pulling back the curtain on college athletics, but dousing it with gasoline and lighting it aflame. What Jerry Tarkanian, a legend ahead of his time, was saying and doing all those years ago has truly hit the mainstream, reaching levels of lunacy even he couldn’t have envisioned. Those championship banners sure look pretty, though.”

SB Nation’s Jason Kirk echoed Wetzel and others, adding a troubling scenario which had to have crossed many inquiring minds. “What’s stopping a school from setting up a similar “paper course” and making sure it’s open to all students," said Kirk, "then sending athletes through it?”

David Teel from the Daily Press in Newport News, Va., agrees. “More than a decade of academic fraud cost UNC athletics little more than legal fees and public respect,” Teel wrote. “If (a university) is willing to risk backlash from accreditation agencies, alumni, donors, fans and legislators, then create all the basket-weaving classes you’d like for the student body.”

College basketball starts Friday night; there are a ton of unanswered questions, from eligibility to player rotations. Here is what little info I have on the top 13 games tonight:

West Virginia beat Texas A&M 81-77 at home LY; they were up 18 at half, made 11-26 on arc but only 11-23 on foul line. Aggies fought back behind 10-21 shooting on the arc. A&M has couple of kids out for this game, which is being played in Germany. Texas A&M has 4 starters back from a 16-15 team that went 8-10 in SEC. Return of 6-10 Williams helps them. West Virginia isn’t as deep as normal, might not press as much, but they’re still expected to be a top 10 team. Last year, SEC teams were 11-6 vs spread when facing a Big X team.

North Carolina crushed Northern Iowa 85-42 LY; game was only 33-26 at the half. UNI shot 6-24 on the arc, wound up 14-16, 9-9 in the Missouri Valley. Panthers are picked 3rd in MVC this year, a league weakened by Wichita’s departure. UNI has three starters back this season. North Carolina lost three starters from its national title team, plus PG Berry (broken hand) is out for a few weeks. Going to take a while for Carolina to get some chemistry. Last two years, ACC teams are 7-2 vs spread when playing an MVC opponent.

Missouri is supposed to make a quantum leap into the top 25 after winning 27 games combined the last three years; they’ve got a top 5 recruiting class and four starters back from LY’s 8-24 that got the last coach fired. One of their assistant coaches is the dad of two of their recruits; go figure. Iowa State lost four starters from LY, is in rebuilding mode, after making NCAAs the last six years. Cyclones lost 73% of scoring, 56% of rebounding, 78% of assists from LY. You’d think it will take some time for the newcomers to come together.

USC is one of the teams caught in crosshairs of SneakerGate; they’ve got at least one player who is sitting out right now. Trojans have all five starters back from 1 26-10 team that won an NCAA tourney game last March, but their chemistry is an unknown, seeing as one of their assistants is under indictment. Fullerton lost three starters from LY’s 17-15 team; Titans struggled on offense and lost their leading scorer. Fullerton has seven new kids; five freshmen, five JC transfers, so early on this year, they figure to struggle as they get to know each other. Last couple years, Big West teams are 12-22 vs spread when facing a Pac-12 opponent.

Long Beach State toned down its pre-Big West schedule because five players transferred last spring; 49ers have seven new players and lot of holes to fill, including point guard- they brought in a JC PG and also one from Finland. San Francisco returns nine of its top 10 scorers from LY’s 20-13 team tbat went 10-8 in a top-heavy WCC. Eight of their first nine games are at home Dons think they can be a top 3 team in the WCC- they’re picked 4th. Last two years, WCC teams are 20-17 vs spread when facing a Big West opponent.

Georgia Tech is playing UCLA in China; what a mess. Three UCLA players (all freshmen) are under house arrest in Shanghai, after a shoplifiting incident- they will not play here. Friend of Ga Tech’s coach went public with claims he has helped the coach pay off Tech players with illegal benefits. Two Tech players stayed home in Atlanta because of that. One of the freshman was supposed to be UCLA’s power forward; Bruins figure to share the PG spot this year- they’re thin without those three kids. Tech was a surprising 21-16 LY; expectations were higher now, until the off-court issues reared their head.

Memphis had six kids bolt the program last spring; they’ve got two starters and a walk-on back- they’ve got eight new players, only 10 on scholarship overall, are picked in lower half of the AAC. Memphis has decent big guy; they’re thin at guard. Alabama has one guy ineligible, another guy hurt; both starters- they’re still talented, but thin. Last two years, SEC teams are 9-6 vs spread when playing AAC squads. This game is at the Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Weber State score 1.17 ppp in LY’s 77-71 win at Utah State, its first win over the Aggies in last five meetings- they shot 63% inside the arc. Aggies won their last two visits to Ogden, 77-71/73-70. Utah State has two really good 6-4 soph guards; big-time schools tried to poach McEwen; he is that good. Danny Ainge’s son is a freshman sub for USU. Weber State isn’t real deep; they need their freshmen to produce, sooner than later. Last two years, Big Sky teams are 15-13 vs spread when playing a Mountain West team, 5-4 at home.

East Tennessee St lost four starters from SoCon title team that lost 80-65 to Florida in NCAA tournament- they’re 51-20 the last two years. ETSU coach Forbes was JC coach, is a recruiter; Buccaneers’ only returning starter is a 6-4 senior PG- it’ll take time for them to gel. Northern Kentucky has four starters back from 24-11 team that won Horizon tourney, lost 79-70 to Kentucky in first round of NCAA’s. Last two years, SoCon teams are 4-0 SU/ATS vs Horizon teams; ETSU won/covered vs Green Bay-Detroit-Milwaukee.

Siena lost four of five starters from LY, has no seniors this year- 10 of their guys are frosh/sophs. Starting on road is tough duty, especially with untested PG’s. Saints do have a 6-8 freshman who was on the Canadian National Team. Charleston has all five starters back from LY’s 25-10 team, is picked to win the CAA. Cougars shot only 33.2% behind arc LY; if they improve that, they’ll be a Cinderella in March. Last two years, MAAC teams are 8-5-2 vs spread vs CAA opponents.

St Bonaventure won its last six games with Niagara, the last three by 10+ points each. Niagara has won only 32 games the last four years; they’re expected to be better this year, with all five starters back from LY’s 10-23 team that lost six of its last seven games. Bonnies has 4 starters back from LY’s 20-12, 11-7 team; they’re picked to be a contender in A-14. Bonnies have one of best backcourts in A-14, with two senior guards- they have 60 wins the last three years. Last two years, MAAC teams are 12-9 vs spread when playing A-14 teams.

Cal-Irvine beat South Dakota State 73-58 at home LY; Irvine held Jackrabbits to 0.83 ppp, led by 14 at half. Anteaters won 114 games the last five years; they’ve got three starters back, but lost 48% of team’s scoring from LY. They need a go-to scorer to emerge; their defense should be fine. South Dakota State went 8-8 in Summit but won 9 of last 12 games, including the conference tourney; they’ve got three starters back from that team- they need to develop a point guard.

Washington’s new coach Hopkins was a Syracuse aide for 22 years, but he is from California; Huskies went 9-22 LY, fell into trap of recruiting top 100 recruits who bolted after one year in college. Washington has four starters back but lost Fultz to the NBA. Belmont has 117 wins the last five years, is once again expected to contend in the OVC, a lesser league than the Pac-12. Bruins have three starters back from a 23-7 team that won an NIT game at Georgia. Belmont expects to play a little faster this year, which may help in OVC more than it will here.

Boeheim to face son Jimmy in opener
November 9, 2017

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) Jim Boeheim has pretty much experienced everything during his long coaching tenure at Syracuse - Big East titles, Final Fours, a national championship, NCAA investigations and Hall of Fame induction.

And yet, as he begins season No. 42 at his alma mater, Boeheim is about to experience something new. The toddler he once brought to shoot at a toy basket during a preseason media day will be on the opposing team when the Orange open their season against Cornell on Friday night.

Oldest son Jimmy Boeheim is a freshman forward for the Big Red.

''I just want him to play well,'' Boeheim said. ''That's all I care about. I just want him to be ready. I'll try not to think about it. I'm pretty much just worried about my team.''

At least there seems to be a happy medium. Wife Juli will stroll into the Carrier Dome wearing a shirt made specifically for the occasion. It has Boeheim vs. Boeheim on the front, Big Red down one sleeve and Orange down the other, and ''I can't lose'' inscribed on the back.

''I'm kind of pinching myself, very excited,'' she said. ''Syracuse is supposed to win and should win and always has won in this game, so we don't want that to change. I know I'm going to be a nervous wreck.

''We want Jimmy to play well and Syracuse to win.''

For Jimmy Boeheim, it'll be the realization of a lifelong goal.

''It's the beginning of my collegiate career. It's something I've dreamed about my whole life,'' he said. ''Going home adds to it, I guess, but I've never let nerves get to me too much.''

It's the start of the final chapter of the Boeheim era at Syracuse, and it certainly promises to be unique. Cornell is always on the schedule and next year Boeheim will become the college coach of his younger son, Buddy, a guard who already has accepted an offer to play for his dad .

''It's his dream come true. I keep reminding myself that,'' Juli said of their youngest son. ''I am very happy and we feel so blessed for the situation, even though I know it will have its moments.''

No surprise there. The kid bleeds Orange like nobody else.

''He'd cry his eyes out for two and three hours after a loss,'' said Juli, who used to cart her sons to the downtown YMCA on Saturday mornings in the dead of winter when they were toddlers so they could learn the nuances of the game their dad had long since mastered. ''Jimmy cried, too, when we lost, but he could handle it better.''

Boeheim will turn 73 later this month, which means he'll be nearing his 78th birthday when Buddy finishes college. That is not a concern for Boeheim, who continues a workout regimen during the season that includes two sessions of Pilates weekly.

''I think you should never make anything about age in this country. I don't know why we ever did,'' Boeheim said. ''If anything, I think I'm more motivated now than I was when I was younger.

''Obviously, I'm not going to coach forever, but you want to do the best you can, and we're going to try to do it.''

The Orange won both of their preseason games but struggled early in each against Division II foes before rallying and winning handily. Cornell represents a step up from those exhibitions.

Syracuse assistant coach Gerry McNamara, a star as a freshman on Boeheim's 2003 national championship team, figures he knows exactly what will unfold at tipoff on Friday night because the script will never change, no matter who is on the opposing bench.

''I think it's going to be a little bit mixed, the sense of pride hoping he (Jimmy) does well, just not too well to beat us,'' McNamara said. ''Coach is who he is. At the end of the day, he wants to win, and that, above all else, is going to overpower anything.''

Porter, Bagley head freshman class
November 10, 2017

This year's freshman class might not have quite as much talent as the star-studded group that shook up college basketball last season and produced the first seven picks in the most recent NBA draft.

But it still has plenty of difference makers.

''It's a good class, just maybe not an exceptional star-power class like we saw last year,'' said Jerry Meyer, the director of scouting for 247Sports.

The most notable newcomers arguably are Duke forward Marvin Bagley III and Missouri forward Michael Porter Jr. They're the top two prospects in the class according to composite rankings of recruiting sites compiled by 247Sports .

Porter is just the fifth freshman ever to make the Associated Press preseason All-America team .

''If you were in a laboratory and creating a power forward, Marvin Bagley would be the guy,'' Meyer said. ''And if you're creating a small forward or wing player, Michael Porter would be the guy.''

Here's a rundown of some freshmen poised to make major impacts in the 2017-18 college basketball season.

---

DeANDRE AYTON, ARIZONA

Height: 7-foot-1

Position: Forward

Notes: Ayton, who is from the Bahamas, has averaged 26 points and 10.5 rebounds in two preseason exhibition games with the third-ranked Wildcats after being rated as the nation's No. 4 prospect in his class according to the 247Sports Composite. ''It's his intelligence that sets him apart more than anything, in my opinion,'' Arizona coach Sean Miller said. ''He's got great ability, but he knows what he's doing out there and he makes his teammates better.'' Ayton also is so athletic that he can jump high enough to touch the top of the backboard. He may be the final piece that earns Miller his first Final Four appearance.

---

MARVIN BAGLEY III, DUKE

Height: 6-11

Position: Forward

Notes: Bagley was the consensus No. 1 recruit in the 2018 class before reclassifying so that he could start his college career now. ''He has a very refined jump hook for a player who hasn't even played in college yet,'' Meyer said. ''He's way ahead of the curve.'' Bagley had 24.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game last season at Sierra Canyon in Chatsworth, California. Bagley averaged 20.5 points and 8 rebounds in two exhibition games with the top-ranked Blue Devils . ''The kid, he really loves to play,'' Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. ''He is just unique - and you have to let unique happen.'' Bagley leads a loaded Duke recruiting class that includes three other players also rated among the top 17 prospects in the 247Sports Composite: Trevon Duval (6th), Wendell Carter (7th) and Gary Trent Jr. (17th).

---

MOHAMED BAMBA, TEXAS

Height: 6-11

Position: Forward

Notes: Bamba, ranked third in the 247Sports Composite, will try to help rejuvenate a Texas program coming off an 11-22 season . Bamba had 15 points and 10 rebounds in an exhibition victory over Texas A&M. ''He's an elite rim protector and just kind of an unbelievable defensive presence,'' Meyer said. ''He's so long and he thrives at being good at it - his shot blocking and his rebounding. I think he's going to surprise a little bit with his offense because what you focus on and talk about is his defense, but he's not a bad offensive player by any means.'' Bamba was born in Harlem, New York, but played high school basketball at Westtown School in West Chester, Pennsylvania. His parents are originally from the Ivory Coast but met in New York.

---

KEVIN KNOX, KENTUCKY

Height: 6-9

Position: Forward

Notes: We could have put a few different Kentucky newcomers on this list, but we believe Knox could make the biggest impact for the fifth-ranked Wildcats. Knox is the son of former Florida State wide receiver Kevin Knox, who played on the Seminoles' 1993 national championship team. He averaged 28.5 points and 11.3 rebounds his senior year at Tampa Catholic after collecting 30.1 points and 11.2 rebounds per game as a junior. Knox had 15 points and 11 rebounds in Kentucky's final exhibition game. Meyer says that Knox is still a little unrefined at this point but has ''freaky'' athleticism. Kentucky's freshman class includes seven players rated 31st or better in the 247Sports Composite: Hamidou Diallo (10th), Knox (11th), Jarred Vanderbilt (12th), P.J. Washington (15th), Nick Richards (18th), Quade Green (26th) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (31st).

---

MICHAEL PORTER JR., MISSOURI

Height: 6-10

Position: Forward

Notes: Porter faces the burden of trying to help turn around a Missouri program that has finished in the Southeastern Conference basement each of the last three years. Porter showcased his enormous potential by collecting 21 points and eight rebounds in an exhibition loss to No. 4 Kansas. ''There's really nothing offensively he can't do, and he has versatility defensively as well,'' Meyer said. Porter headlines a heralded Missouri recruiting class that also includes his younger brother Jontay Porter, who reclassified from the 2018 class so that he could begin his college career right away.

---

TRAE YOUNG, OKLAHOMA

Height: 6-2

Position: Guard

Notes: Young will try to lead his hometown school back to NCAA Tournament contention after the Sooners staggered to an 11-20 finish last season . Young, ranked 23rd in the 247Sports Composite, scored a whopping 42.6 points per game his senior year at Norman (Oklahoma) North High School. Young had 23 points and six assists in Oklahoma's final exhibition game. ''He's going to score,'' Meyer said. ''The questions for Trae will just be defensively, containing his opposition and holding up physically. He doesn't have the biggest frame. He's kind of slight, so just holding up to the rigors of high-major college basketball the whole season, those will be the questions. The one thing that's not a question is (whether) he's going to score points. He's a natural-born scorer.''

Avery Johnson ready to clear hurdles
November 9, 2017

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) Nick Saban has been known to recruit a few good players, so it shouldn't come as a surprise he wants Avery Johnson on his team.

No, not Alabama's football team - the 52-year-old Johnson is a little long in the tooth for that.

But Saban likes the former NBA point guard to be on his squad during offseason staff basketball games at Coleman Coliseum. Saban likes to win, something Johnson knows a little about.

Johnson went from undersized, franchise-swapping free agent to NBA champion as a player and reached the NBA Finals in his first full season as a head coach. Now, he's trying to take Alabama's basketball program to heights it hasn't seen in a while.

This is the season the former San Antonio Spurs guard has been pointing to. The Crimson Tide has a highly rated recruiting class coming in and every major contributor returning from last year. Alabama is picked to finish fourth in the Southeastern Conference and just missed cracking the preseason AP Top 25.

''We were just kind of piecing it together trying to get to Year 3, where we could have a blend of freshmen and a blend of guys that had already been in our program for a year or two,'' Johnson said in a recent interview. ''We think we're at that stage now to keep trending upward.''

But that trajectory has potentially been thrown off course by injury and a national federal investigation into college basketball.

Alabama had declared freshman point guard Collin Sexton, one of the nation's top 10 recruits, ineligible. Athletic director Greg Byrne said Thursday night that Sexton will only miss one game, under a suspension for violating NCAA rules.

The school determined he was an unnamed player mentioned in a federal complaint outlining charges against four college basketball assistants and others in September, ESPN reported Tuesday. Alabama basketball administrator Kobie Baker resigned after the school's internal review following the release of that complaint.

Last season's top scorer, forward Braxton Key, had surgery on his left knee Tuesday and could be back in about four weeks, Johnson said Wednesday. Guard/forward Riley Norris and guard Ar'Mond Davis are also battling injuries, but Johnson hopes they'll return to practice next week.

But, as Johnson says, ''Life is not always a perfect world.''

Whether all that works out - and right now that's a big if - makes the upcoming season a question mark.

Before the uncertainty, Johnson appeared to have a team with the potential to make the Tide's first NCAA Tournament since 2012.

Alabama has sold a program-record 6,200 season tickets. Johnson led the Tide to the SEC tournament semifinals last season and received a two-year contract extension through 2023 in August.

Johnson's high energy is a big reason for that. He's been selling the program to both fans and recruits like Sexton and guard John Petty.

''Coach's personality is really outgoing, energetic,'' Norris said. ''He's an easy person to talk to, easy person to be around. People want to be around him, like to talk to him. He's just got an outgoing personality. It helps him, of course, talking to the media, talking to the fans, trying to sell the program.

''And the talent he's brought in. It's probably the best recruiting class Alabama's ever had.''

Johnson is used to overcoming obstacles on and off the court.

The 5-foot-11 point guard was undrafted out of Southern University, where he twice led the nation in assists. He changed teams six times in his first six seasons and helped the Spurs win an NBA title in his fourth stop with the franchise.

Only the second sub-6-footer to play in 1,000 NBA games, the ''Little General'' led the Dallas Mavericks to their first NBA Finals in 2005-06 after finishing out the previous season as interim coach, then went on to coach the Nets. Alabama is his first college coaching job.

''I've been competing my whole life, playing in the NBA undrafted, being named the Mavericks coach without any head coaching experience. And on and on,'' Johnson said.

In April 2015, Johnson took over at Alabama, a school more known for football, and has embraced both that ''other'' sport and life coaching in the college ranks. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich believes Johnson has the personality and organizational skills to thrive in Tuscaloosa.

''He's not just an excellent coach, but I can see him being an excellent recruiter also,'' Popovich said. ''He's a really personable young man and it takes time to get the talent and create the culture and he's not skipped any steps. He's methodically done both, establishing a culture and getting talent into the program. With his expertise, they're going to do nothing but continue to get better as you've seen every year. I'm thrilled for him.''

Johnson also has embraced football, building a rapport with Saban. The two have talked about giving Alabama elite basketball and football programs, like Florida has had with coaches like Billy Donovan and Urban Meyer.

As for those offseason staff basketball games, playing point guard for 16 NBA seasons doesn't mean Johnson gets that spot on Saban's team.

''You already know the answer to that,'' Johnson said, smiling. ''He and I have a difference of opinion. But that's OK.''

So long as Johnson can get `Bama back to the NCAA Tournament.

UNLV looking for a bounce back year
November 9, 2017

LAS VEGAS (AP) Marvin Menzies' first season at UNLV did not go as planned. He had to throw together a last-minute recruiting class, injuries mounted and so did the losses, leading to the worst season in Runnin' Rebels' history.

A top-20 recruiting class, headlined by five-star forward Brandon McCoy, should be just what Menzies needs to get UNLV headed back in the right direction.

''Looking forward to moving the needle a little forward to create more positive vibes in the city,'' Menzies said.

There weren't a lot in Menzies' first season after moving over from New Mexico State to replace Dave Rice.

Menzies inherited three scholarship players, got a late start in recruiting after being hired in April and the Rebels struggled because of it. UNLV opened with a home loss to South Alabama and kept losing, finishing 11-21 for the worst record in the program's 49-year history.

Menzies took steps toward avoiding another letdown season near The Strip by signing one of the nation's best recruiting classes and a pair of high-level junior college transfers.

The headliner of the recruiting class is McCoy, a 6-foot-11 McDonald's All-American from San Diego.

McCoy is a potential game-changer for the Rebels at both ends of the floor and could end up being one of the best freshmen in the country by season's end, not to mention a first-round NBA draft pick.

''I love the fact that he loves to play the game,'' Menzies said. ''I love the fact that he loves to be coached. He looks you in the eye and he gives you responses that make you want to stay engaged and get this kid better.''

A few more things to look for from UNLV:

---

THE RETURNEES:
It's not all about the newcomers in Sin City. Guards Jovan Mooring and Kris Clyburn are back and could be the glue that holds the Rebels together. Mooring led the team with 12.6 points and 4.0 assists per game while finishing second with 36 steals. Clyburn averaged 7.3 points and 5.3 rebounds, numbers that should go up this season with a year of experience under Menzies' system.

THE NEWCOMERS: Menzies beat out several schools to not only get McCoy, but multiple top-level recruits. Shakur Juiston, a 6-7 forward from New Jersey, averaged 17.3 points, 12.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists while leading Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College to a national championship. Amauri Hardy is a highly-touted point guard from Detroit, Tervell Black a 6-7 forward from Cleveland, Jay Green a guard from Australia and 6-11 Cheikh Mbacke Dion is a potential defensive-game changer Senegal.

NO MORE MORGAN: The Rebels parted ways with forward Dwayne Morgan over the summer. He was suspended following his arrest on misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges and UNLV was one over its scholarship limit of 13. Morgan averaged 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds in eight games last season before being shut down due to injuries. Morgan transferred to Southern Utah, where he reunites with former interim UNLV coach Todd Simon, now the head coach of the Thunderbirds.

THE SCHEDULE: UNLV opens at home against Florida A&M on Nov. 11 and will face either Ole Miss or Utah in the second game of the MGM Resorts Main Event at nearby T-Mobile Arean. The Rebels also have non-conference games against No. 3 Arizona at home and Illinois at MGM Grand Arena.

Vols' Williams seeks to build off his bigs
November 9, 2017

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Tennessee forward Grant Williams realizes he won't sneak up on anybody this year.

Williams developed into one of the Southeastern Conference's biggest overachievers last season to become one of Tennessee's most reliable players as a freshman. Now the Volunteers need him to take the next step and develop more consistency.

''He's got to be a guy that's constantly climbing,'' Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said. ''He can't have those up-and-down days where he's not really trying to get better.''

The Vols head into Friday's season opener with Presbyterian knowing their chances of seriously contending for an NCAA Tournament bid depend on how the six remaining players from last year's seven-man freshman class improve now that they have a year of experience. Williams is the best of the bunch.

''Last year we were really young, and that was our excuse for all the mistakes we made and all the things we did,'' Williams said. ''Now we don't have that excuse anymore. We've grown up. We've got to be mature mentally, both on the court and off the court and in the film room.''

Williams is Tennessee's top returning scorer and rebounder after averaging 12.6 points and 5.9 rebounds last season. He had the sixth-highest point total of any Tennessee freshman ever after being rated just 191st nationally in his high school class according to composite rankings of recruiting sites compiled by 247Sports .

The Vols need even more from him.

Barnes already has reminded Williams he can't be satisfied with what he did last season. Barnes left Williams out of the starting lineup of Tennessee's first exhibition game last week because he didn't believe the 6-7 sophomore had performed consistently enough in practice.

''I just wanted him to know that I'm not playing around,'' Barnes said afterward. ''We've got to have five guys at least who we can count on every day. I don't want to be on a roller-coaster ride with these guys.''

Williams understood Barnes' decision and said that he hadn't been consistent enough in the days leading up to that exhibition.

''I know for us to be good, he has to give us ego checks,'' Williams said. ''He has to do them for everyone, not just me.''

Williams responded by averaging 21 points and 9.5 rebounds in Tennessee's two exhibition games, including a 24-point effort Sunday in a victory at Clemson that raised money for the Salvation Army's hurricane relief efforts in Texas and Florida.

His ability to respond to Barnes' criticism reflects Williams' work ethic. Williams, the son of a NASA engineer, opted to play for Tennessee after considering Yale and Princeton. He can play several different musical instruments.

Williams' unwillingness to settle is evident when he brings up his 30-point performance at Georgia last season. Williams notes that he only got four rebounds in that game, which Tennessee lost 76-75 .

''That's something that really can't happen,'' Williams said. ''If I'm going to have those scoring outings or do something like that, I need to be on the glass as well because that's what my team needs more than points because I know all of us can score.''

Williams says he wants to average at least 10 rebounds this season, a tall order for someone who had less than 6 per game a year ago. If he accomplishes that task, Tennessee's team goal of making the NCAA Tournament could be well within reach.

Debut for coach Mike Hopkins at UW
November 9, 2017

SEATTLE (AP) Mike Hopkins is in the early stages of a remodel that won't be completed soon.

It didn't have to be this way for Hopkins. He could have remained at Syracuse and waited until Jim Boeheim retired and Hopkins was handed the keys to an already finished product.

But that's not what Hopkins ultimately wanted, so his task of rebuilding a downtrodden Washington program begins Friday night when the Huskies host Belmont.

He's no longer the top assistant, the interim head coach or the coach in waiting - all titles he held at Syracuse. Hopkins is fully entrenched at Washington and slowly, methodically turning the program into his own.

''Even when I coached at Syracuse all the years, or even when I coached the select team with USA Basketball when I was the head coach, I prepared like I was a player,'' Hopkins said. ''I feel like I am playing in the game.''

Hopkins inherited a program that under former coach Lorenzo Romar won conference titles, went to NCAA tournaments and produced NBA talent. But over the final six seasons of Romar's tenure the Huskies failed to make the NCAAs and the foundation eroded. The Huskies were 9-22 last season and closed the year on a 13-game losing streak.

That's where Hopkins steps in, trying to rebuild the program with these fundamentals: Defense. Effort. Intensity. They're words Hopkins' players are quickly learning and what their new coach expects in games.

''He's real intense,'' Washington guard David Crisp said. ''He gets on you if you're not bringing your best. He brings the best out of you. In the games that we've had, if I'm slacking or something he'll tell me to pick it up. He tells me to keep leading. And I just go out there and try to do it for him.''

All Hopkins has known in college basketball is Syracuse, as a player and assistant coach. The traditions. The atmosphere. The experience. A dome full of rabid fans all clad in Orange.

It won't be that way in the opener. Hopkins' debut is coming opposite Washington's ninth-ranked football team playing its biggest game of the season at Stanford. The crowd will be sparse and some will be checking the football score. The atmosphere will be tepid. And the opponent - Belmont - may be better than the home team.

That doesn't change what Hopkins expects from his team.

''I want to be great defensively and I want to fight on the court,'' Hopkins said. ''Those are the things you can control and with that play together. You can't control missing shots, you control trying to get better shots and making sure the right guys are getting shots. The most important thing is that you've got to take pride in defense, and you've got to do it together.''

He understands this isn't a quick turnaround for the Huskies. Even during a more-challenging-than-expected exhibition game last week played before a small smattering of fans, Hopkins got a feel for what he believes Washington can be again.

''Walking out and it was kind of like that moment where you're going, `this is incredible, this is everything I dreamt of,''' he said.

Ewing wouldn't mind some 'Hoya Paranoia'
November 9, 2017

WASHINGTON (AP) Now that he's the team's coach, Patrick Ewing wants to figure out a way to return Georgetown basketball to the good ol' days.

All of that winning. All of that reputation.

'''Hoya Paranoia' was great,'' Ewing said during an interview as he prepares to make his sideline debut at his alma mater, with Georgetown hosting Jacksonville University on Sunday. ''Everybody was against us. And I'd love to bring all of that back.''

He punctuated that thought with his baritone chuckle.

Ewing's first job as a head coach at any level, after 15 years as an assistant in the NBA, comes with challenges at a school he led to the 1984 NCAA championship and two other title game appearances. He was a 7-foot-tall, shot-blocking center who would go on to star for the New York Knicks as the top prize in the league's first draft lottery.

''As successful as I was as a player,'' Ewing said, ''that's how successful I want to be as a coach.''

That's no small task, considering the long-ago highs of the program under coach John Thompson Jr. and the recent lows under his son, John Thompson III, called JT3 by most.

During Ewing's four years playing for Big John, as the elder Thompson is known around these parts, Georgetown went a combined 121-23, a winning percentage of .840. What's more, the Hoyas rose to national prominence as much for their play on the court as their coach's persona off it and rules such as not allowing freshmen to speak to the media during their first semester on campus.

Back then, Georgetown basketball mattered, something that hasn't really been the case lately.

''Everyone was wearing the Georgetown Starter jacket, from the East Coast to the West Coast. People in the movies was wearing it. Enrollment spiked. When the team is successful, the university is successful,'' Ewing said. ''So I think all that showed how dominant we were.''

That was then. Now, he inherits a team that went 29-36, a .446 winning percentage, over the past two years under the younger Thompson, who was fired after 13 seasons.

In the decade since JT3's lone trip to the Final Four in 2007, the Hoyas have won a grand total of three NCAA Tournament games. They also accumulated one surprising loss to a much-lower-seeded team after another.

The Hoyas' 14-18 record last season included six consecutive losses at the end and was the team's worst since the 1950s.

So outside of Georgetown, expectations are rather low at the moment: Big East Conference coaches voted the Hoyas to finish ninth in the 10-team league. Ewing acknowledged that his non-conference schedule - Jacksonville, for example, is an ASUN Conference school that last was involved in March Madness 31 years ago - is quite purposely soft.

''My guys are coming off two poor years,'' he said, ''and it's my job to mend their egos and get them to believe in themselves again.''

Those players are familiar, of course, with their new coach's past.

''Greatness,'' senior guard Jonathan Mulmore said simply.

''NBA top 50 player of all time. Hall of Famer,'' junior center Jessie Govan said.

''I'm a big Knicks fan, so my father told me about Coach Ewing. Obviously I wasn't alive or around to see him play,'' sophomore guard Jagan Mosely said. ''But just knowing he's coached in the league for 15 years means all of us can be sponges, because I think that's all of our goals one day. But we're focused on the goal right now - to just win games and be great.''

Ewing would love if that winds up being the case.

Because he is well aware that, in this new job at an old haunt, he will be judged on one basis.

''If I don't win, people could call me `the greatest Hoya ever,' but as you know, if I don't win, there will be another coach here, sooner or later,'' Ewing said. ''Every coach knows, as soon as ... you dot the I's and cross the T's, the writing's on the wall. At some point in your career, you're going to be let go. That's just life in coaching.''

Last year's Final 4 teams expecting boost
November 9, 2017

A few of last year's Final Four teams have added transfers to help restock.

That's particularly apparent at Oregon.

The Ducks had to replace four starters from last year's Final Four team and responded by adding a pair of graduate transfers - Elijah Brown from New Mexico and MiKyle McIntosh from Illinois State. They join Georgetown transfer Paul White, who sat out 2016-17 due to NCAA transfer rules.

Brown could have the biggest impact of the newcomers after leading New Mexico in scoring the last two seasons.

''We knew we were going to be losing a lot of scorers, and he had scored very well,'' Oregon coach Dana Altman said. ''We do have to improve his efficiency. His shooting percentages, his assist-to-turnover ratio have to improve. But I think he's a very gifted offensive player.''

Defending national champion North Carolina also added a graduate transfer by signing Cameron Johnson from Pittsburgh , while South Carolina is hoping former Delaware guard Kory Holden can help the Gamecocks make up for all the backcourt firepower they lost from their Final Four team.

''Everybody loves him,'' North Carolina coach Roy Williams said of Johnson. ''(He's) worked extremely hard in practice, and I expect he's going to be a very good player for us.''

Here's a look at some transfers poised to make an impact this season. As this list shows, some teams are following Oregon's model in relying on multiple transfers.

---

G Elijah Brown, F MiKyle McIntosh and F Paul White, Oregon

Height/Class: Brown: 6-foot-4/Senior. McIntosh: 6-7/Senior. White: 6-9/Junior

Former school: Brown: New Mexico and Butler. McIntosh: Illinois State. White: Georgetown.

Notes: Brown, the son of Golden State Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown, averaged 18.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists last season at New Mexico to earn second-team all-Mountain West honors. He was a first-team all-Mountain West selection two years ago, when he had 21.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. McIntosh was a second-team all-Missouri Valley Conference choice last season with 12.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. White had 5 points and 2.8 rebounds per game for Georgetown two seasons ago.

---

G Jalen Hudson and G Egor Koulechov, Florida

Height/Class: Hudson: 6-6/Junior. Koulechov: 6-5/Senior

Former schools: Hudson: Virginia Tech. Koulechov: Rice and Arizona State.

Notes: Both Hudson and Koulechov should play major roles for Florida as the Gators look to contend for a Southeastern Conference title . Hudson missed last season due to NCAA transfer rules after scoring 8.4 points per game for Virginia Tech in 2015-16. Hudson led the Gators in scoring in each of their two exhibition games. Koulechov, who began his college career at Arizona State, comes to Florida as a graduate transfer after averaging 18.2 points and 8.9 rebounds for Rice last season to earn first-team all-Conference USA honors.

---

G Cameron Johnson, North Carolina

Height/Class: 6-8/Junior

Former school: Pittsburgh

Notes: Johnson started all 33 games for Pittsburgh last season and was the Panthers' top 3-point shooter. He averaged 11.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists while making 41.5 percent (78 of 188) of his 3-point attempts. North Carolina should know him well, as Johnson matched a career high by scoring 24 points last season against the eventual national champion Tar Heels . Although Johnson is coming to North Carolina as a graduate transfer , he has two years of eligibility remaining because he took a medical redshirt in 2014-15.

---

G Caleb Martin, G Cody Martin and G Kendall Stephens, Nevada

Height/Class: Caleb Martin: 6-7/Junior. Cody Martin: 6-7/Junior. Stephens: 6-7/Senior.

Notes: The Martin twins were both part-time starters at North Carolina State before sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. Caleb Martin averaged 11.4 points and 4.7 rebounds in 2015-16. Cody Martin had 6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game that season. Stephens averaged 8.7 points in 2014-15 and 6.1 points in 2015-16 for Purdue before sitting out last season. Stephens averaged 22.3 points in Nevada's three exhibition games.

---

F Malik Newman, Kansas

Height/Class: 6-3/Sophomore

Former school: Mississippi State

Notes: The former McDonald's All-American was rated as the nation's No. 8 overall prospect in his high school class, according to a composite ranking of recruiting sites compiled by 247Sports . He averaged 11.3 points at Mississippi State in 2015-16 before sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. Newman has been named the Big 12 preseason newcomer of the year.

---

G Geno Thorpe, Syracuse

Height/Class: 6-3/Senior

Former schools: South Florida, Penn State

Notes: Thorpe played two years at Penn State before transferring to South Florida, where he led the Bulls in scoring (15.1), assists (4.6), steals (1.6) and minutes (33) last season. As a graduate transfer, Thorpe is able to play immediately for Syracuse. Thorpe has been dealing with an ankle injury that has limited him in the preseason, but his production at USF suggests he should emerge as a key player for a Syracuse team that has just one returning starter .

Saint Mary's faces high expectations again as WCC leader
November 9, 2017

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) They were disgusted and downright embarrassed.

Freshly ousted with a stunning early exit from the West Coast Conference tournament three seasons ago, Saint Mary's made the quiet flight home from Las Vegas and reached campus about 10 p.m. that night in March 2015 after a loss to Portland. Coach Randy Bennett sent home the seniors and called a team meeting for the underclassmen. He did the talking, for about an hour.

The Gaels hadn't been close to good enough, or played to their potential. This would be a painful lesson - and also a meaningful learning moment.

''It made us realize it was unacceptable,'' center Jock Landale recalled. ''It was tough to get a word in.''

After that, Landale, Calvin Hermanson, Emmett Naar and some others left the locker room and went out to the court at tiny McKeon Pavilion for some intense 1-on-1. The games went on until midnight.

They made a pact, telling each other: ''Next year, that's not going to be us.''

Bennett noticed an immediate shift after that. More focus, a togetherness and determination. It began in spring, carried through the summer, then into fall camp and the games. That season, Saint Mary's won 29 games and a WCC regular-season title before missing out on an NCAA berth. This past March, the Gaels lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Arizona after another 29-win campaign. It began with a victory against Nevada that left Wolf Pack coach Eric Musselman questioning his decision to open against the Gaels in Moraga.

Now it's time for a last hurrah from Hermanson, Landale and Naar - all senior captains for 22nd-ranked Saint Mary's. And big things are expected of the high-flying Gaels, the most close-knit team 17th-year coach Bennett has ever had at the mid-major school in San Francisco's East Bay suburbs. Newcomer Cullen Neal is another senior, a transfer guard with previous stops at New Mexico and Mississippi.

''For a lot of these guys, this is the third or fourth year together and they've played in a lot of big games, played with a lot of pressure and a lot of expectations,'' Bennett said. ''There's nothing better for dealing with that than experience, and we have that. I know there's expectations. People keep saying that. I'm like, `What do you think we had last year?' This group has dealt with this for a while.''

Sometimes, these guys even complete each other's sentences.

''It's as tight a team as I've had,'' said Bennett, an occasional visitor at Golden State Warriors practices to observe and visit close friend and assistant Mike Brown.

During practice, the Gaels come together at midcourt for regular huddles and chants of ''Team!'' - following position work and again after pre-practice stretching. They cheer each other at every chance, slapping hands and patting rears. As they stretch on their backs along the baseline, Bennett walks by to give each player an emphatic handshake and wish him a great practice.

It's clear now how that loss to Portland more than 2 1/2 years ago has propelled the program. The Gaels are picked to win the WCC over NCAA Tournament runner-up and top rival Gonzaga.

''The feeling after that game, it just didn't feel right,'' Naar said. ''I think we could all agree we didn't ever want to feel like that again, so that was sort of the fire that lit under us. It was pretty terrible.''

Landale took charge of his own game. The 6-foot-11, 255-pound big man changed his body and diet - giving up sugary treats like his favorite ''lollies'' from home in Australia and making other healthy choices - to become more athletic. He now defends better, handles on-ball screens and dominates on the offensive end with efficiency.

Naar, Landale's Australian countryman, supported him every step of the way when they were roommates. They still have that bond.

For this group, accountability is just part of the daily process, right along with an emphasis to celebrate one another's triumphs. On and off the floor, of course.

''We all kind of revel in each other's success,'' Landale said. ''If you see one guy making a change and it's working for him, other guys start to make those changes if necessary or it helps them realize maybe if I do this thing I should have been doing for a while it will help me with my basketball. We feed off each a little bit in that sense, and I think that's just something from the fact we're so tight and we have the confidence in each other's friendships we can tell each other what we think should change or whether or not we think what someone's doing is right or wrong it's something that helps all of us, for sure.''

Added Hermanson: ''We all want the best for each other.''
