As Justin Cruise said, they had one time out left. But a dumb, dumb play. The field goal they gave up would have meant that Blair Walsh would have been kicking a 52 yarder for the win at the end of the game instead of a tie. Might've made it. My opinion is that there is less pressure when kicking for the win in that situation than when kicking for the tie.

[h=1]Pete Carroll explains fake field goal decision to end the half...The Seattle Seahawks left the NFL world scratching their collective heads at the end of the first half, Monday.[/h]Down 24-17, head coach Pete Carroll went ultra-aggressive. Instead of taking the almost-automatic three points, courtesy of Blair Walsh and a 34-yard field goal attempt, they put on the fake field goal. Punter/holder Jon Ryan snatched the ball back and flipped it to tight end Luke Willson, who was almost immediately pummeled by Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett.
But, Carroll was not dissuaded by the result of the play. The Seahawks saw something they thought they could exploit that just didn't materialize as expected.
“It would have been a really good call if we would have made it. It was something we saw that we wanted to do. It was a terrific opportunity, right where we wanted it," he said. "The defensive tackle made a better play. He wasn’t supposed to be there.”
All the film study in the world can't account for the human element. Whatever the Seahawks saw didn't have Jarrett anywhere near where he was to bust up the play. And a quick view of the play does show that if Willson makes it past Jarrett green grass awaits him but even if there was no chance to get to the endzone, Willson had his marching orders.
“We had a chance to [score a touchdown.] If not, we would run out of bounds to stop the clock," he said. "We knew exactly what was going on. We figured we were going to break it, and it was a matter of giving ourselves another shot. If we score, we keep it and if not we get out of bounds. Luke knew exactly what was up.”
The Seahawks also had a final timeout to stop the clock but unfortunately, Willson was also tackled short of the first down; so the timeout didn't matter.
(The Seahawks lost a heartbreaker at home and missed a golden opportunity to take control of the NFC West. Now they have to pick up the pieces. All in all, the logic for the play was there and they had the pieces in place to execute it. As Carroll said, you may just have to credit Jarrett for making a play he didn't necessarily have any business making or credit head coach Dan Quinn, who's a Pete Carroll disciple, for alerting his team to be ready for Carroll shenanigans.
At this time, when the margin ends up being 34-31, those three points hurt a lot more.

A lesson for bettors: Along with Super Bowl goal line call Carroll's judgment cannot be trusted. Along wih Andy Reeds horrible time management, think twice about asking these 2 to win you money, you've been warned.
