Former Oregon coach Chip Kelly told ESPN on Saturday that he has agreed to become the head next coach at UCLA.
Kelly also had been considering the vacant Florida job, sources previously told ESPN.
The Bruins have been looking for a new head coach since Jim Mora was fired Nov. 19, a day after a third straight loss to USC. He had been with the Bruins for six seasons. Offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch was named interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
The Kelly hiring will bring back a well-recognized name to the Pac 12.
Kelly last coached collegiately at Oregon, going 46-7 with the Ducks from 2009 to '12. Known as an offensive innovator while there, his up-tempo offenses averaged 44.7 points per game during that span. He led Oregon to big bowls in each of his four seasons: Rose Bowl, BCS title game, Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl.
Kelly left Oregon for the NFL shortly before NCAA sanctions were handed down. He was slapped with "failure to monitor" in the Will Lyles case after he was accused of paying $25,000 to the 7-on-7 coach in exchange for him guiding players to the Ducks. The NCAA ruled that Kelly wasn't aware of Lyles' actions but said he was responsible for ensuring his program was in compliance. Kelly also was handed an 18-month show-cause penalty, which expired in late 2014.
As smooth as his teams in Eugene played, Kelly's two stints as head coach in the NFL were anything but.
Hired by the Eagles in 2013, he went 10-6 in each of his first two seasons in Philadelphia, then was abruptly fired after a 6-9 campaign in 2015. Just weeks later, the San Francisco 49ers hired him, but he lasted just a year there, going 2-14 before being relieved of his duties with three years remaining on his contract.
The 49ers currently owe Kelly approximately $15 million, sources told ESPN's Darren Rovell. What Kelly makes at UCLA will offset that and reduce what the 49ers owe him.
Most recently, Kelly has been serving as an analyst for ESPN. He turned/turns 54 on Nov. 25.
At UCLA, Kelly will look to stop a disturbing trend in Westwood -- losses to ranked teams. Under Mora, the Bruins dropped six straight games against ranked programs. They also lost three straight to the Trojans.
UCLA does currently have the nation's No. 14-ranked recruiting class for 2018 and has finished with a top-20 class the past three years.

Kelly sucks. He's a coattail rider. If he hadn't of been in the right place at the right time with Oregon, he wouldn't of been able to get that NFL job (which he was horrible at) and now this UCLA job. He will suck at UCLA.

The recent UCLA coach was and always will be trash. It's just the way it is. Sometimes coaches will get the "right place, right time" deal and they'll get extra shine like the bloated Kelly has. The real problem, however, is UCLA management. They have now hired back-to-back trash coaches.... and they will get trash results.

That's true, but he sucks.

Problem is UCLA management. They hired Mora. What kind of results will you get with Mora? Obvious results. You hire Kelly. What kind of results? It will be the same deal.

Really, they need a wholesale firing of UCLA management b/c they have sucked for a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG time.

UCLA is a tough job. A lot of good schools nearby to compete for the local high school talent. I believe Chip will bring a better offense but can he recruit solid defensive players is the question.

How is Jim Mora comparable to Chip Kelly? He never coached college before UCLA.

Looking at what he did in the NFL doesn't matter one fucking bit. Saban didn't exactly crush it in Miami. Kelly is meant for college. He can pull his gimmicks off and the players are forced to listen to everything he says. Dealing with pros is a far different type of coaching. I would be pretty surprised if he doesn't do well at UCLA, and I bet it will be quick.

Least josh Rosen can go pro as he is an nfl type of qb and chip kelley rather have a Vince young type that sucks but gets taken in the 1st round.

If Rosen was a freshman. This would have killed his career. Stop with these not real offenses .

Interesting that he signed with a non Nike school. Looks to be a great hire. Let Rosen go to pros. He is Jay Cutler Jr.

How are they comparable? They are both loser coaches. If they put in Mora onto the Oregon job when Kelly was promoted, Mora would've won like crazy as well.... but it wouldn't have been b/c of him just as it wasn't b/c of Kelly. Both are shitty coaches. Sometimes shitty coaches are in the right place at the right time and you don't know how bad they really are.

At UCLA you will see that Kelly stinks up the bitch.

Can't stand the Chip Kelly offense. It didn't work for him in the pros where the talent level between teams is a lot closer. Defensive linemen can get into the backfield to easily to blow up the read option hand off.

It only seems to work if you have a huge talent advantage over your opponent, like he did at Oregon. Will he be able to recruit like that at UCLA? I don't think so.

I think Chip is going to be very good in college. We see it all the time, good college coaches don't always succeed in the pros and good pro coaches may not know how to recruit in college

Lots of college guys bomb at the next level, in hoops and football
