I have always contended that the 4 (plus) week lay-offs allows for too many distractions to set-in with the players, home for the Holidays, girl friends placing excessive demands on their ball-playing boy friends, feasting at the dinner table (Momma's insist), perhaps, more than a tad-bit of Christmas cheer, sex (weak legs), late night scenes at the home-town pubs, (late night fights and dui's.....ouch), complacency, more sex and an endless list of coaching concerns when his players are out on the loose when they go home.

The professionals (NFL) have week long lay-offs during the play-offs and a two week lay-off prior to the Super Bowl.
If an (8) team format was installed in college football, the teams would remain intact and remain better prepared for the big games(momentum)......maybe. Some call the bowl games and now, the playoffs, the "third season" of college football.

Mack, I agree with you that a month of not playing a game can cause problems for teams.

However, my Bama team needs a month to get some linebackers healthy.

Just saying from this "homer."

No doubt about it Clover, the long lay-off does allow for the healing of most football injuries, that's why I referred to the Bowls & Play-Offs as the "third season" of college football, the "cranking-up" of the teams machinery, cohesion, incentive and play-making.......on the field of play,

You being an Alabama "homer.......naw, I could hardy tell......LOL. Good luck with your Bowl/Play-off plays.
