So my first time in Aruba, it was great in terms of safety and everything but overall i wasn't impressed.

There are lots of crappy restaurants that overcharge for food. There are some great restaurants with great food but you can get much better value for that money in other great restaurants in other countries including usa.

In terms of site seeing and water activity, there are lot better options. I guess ppl prefer Aruba because its very safe day and night and you can pretty much get anything from usa in the supermarket.

In terms of water activity, most places wouldn't even rent a boat...they said we will have to take it with a tour guy. Other rentals are great but you can do much better in other destination for the money. There are much better snorkelling destinations.

I didn't manage to get a 4 by 4 but still ended up doing the natural pool. You dont need 4 by 4 to do the natural pool. Just take the sedan to the daimari ranch, park the car up top the hill when you can see the cococnut trees and the ranch then do the hike (about 35 minutes walking slow). This way is much better than 4 by 4 because you come across many good photo ops. But the pool itself was overhyped, it was very small and i have seen lot better natural pools. But its still fun though. I am guessing most reviews saying that you MUST need 4 by 4 are done by tour group owners and workers. You can see the entire island without any tour group in your own. I didn't even use a gps...its a small island and if you have a sense of direction its pretty easy to navigate once you memorize the key spots/road in the map. Since i traveled with a toddler and a 1.5 year old we couldn't do most of the group tours because of age limits but i am glad it happened that way because we did almost everything our self. Best location for snorkelling is Baby beach, Manglo alto and the Palm Island. Manglo Alto currents are tricky and you need to be good swimmer if you are going past the yellow bouey. Most snorkeling groups tours bring their boat and dump the tourists in the manglo alto snorkelling area but you can do this easily by youself by accessing it through the Manlgo Alto Beach (not well known by tourists) In the superfood supermarket you can by the full snorkel set including the flippers for 49.99AWG...i ended up getting two and brought it back with me. Its better than renting for $10usd to $25 per hour depending on where you are going. Next time explore it yourself guys...its lot more fun since its a small safe island.

Finally for restaurants, even though i i ate in some fancy good restaurants that you guys recommended, in my opinion the best value for money is the restaurant called Gostoso. I highly recommend to anyone who goes there next time. The owner is Jose and this guy personally comes to your table to explain all the specials. Price is in local money. I highly recommend the Pastel de Baccalauh and beef carpaccio for appetizer. The surf turf with lobster and medallion for entree was great. We ordered 3 entrees, 3 appetizers, 1 desert (tri leite, also highly recommend) and a jug of Sangria (the best sangria i ever had, highly recommend) and the bill after converting to USD was around 185USD. I left a $30 tip on top. This is a restaurant that i would go again and again to try all the items on the menu. Its a good mix of local flair with other things but mainly its a portuguese restaurants. They have great seafood items on the menu as well. If you are into flavor in food, this is a must visit place.

Overall Aruba is not a place i would go out of my way to visit again. Everyone i know hyped up aruba and therefore my expectation was high and that could be the reason i feel that way. Money wasn't an issue for me. But if you are travelling with budget, don't go here...you can get much better bang for the buck in other destinations.

I missed your pre-trip thread. I heard Aruba wasn't all it was made out to be. Better luck on the next one.

Aruba is amazing.

Sounds like you tried to do it cheap. Or at a minimum you expected to eat cheap. That just isn't aruba. I suggest you go to Mexico next time if on a budget.

I'd also say part of it is that you took babies. My wife and I view it as a romantic adult getaway. Took my son to disney world this year but next year its just my wife and I in aruba. And if you didn't do any of the atv tours you really missed out fyi. You also didn't hit up the casinos at the resorts??

Btw, wasn't it in Aruba where that old couple got hacked into barbecue chunks with a machete by a Carmelo Anthony-look alike?

Well, I searched for a machete attack in Aruba.... and I got an illegal in the US attacking someone with a machete at a bar.

PHOENIX - North Phoenix bar customers jumped into action protecting a victim and capturing the suspect after a machete attack.
Phoenix police report that on June 29 they responded to a bar near 28th Street and Bell Road where citizens were waving them down saying the man lying on the ground attacked another man with a machete.
Police found 46-year-old Jesus Manuel Quinonez lying on the ground with blood on his clothes. Customers reported that they locked the victim in the bar after he was stabbed, and they then subdued Quinonez.
Police say Quinonez was in the bar talking with someone, and they realized they worked at the same place. An argument ensued, and Quinonez allegedly pulled out a knife. A patron disarmed Quinonez and others pushed him outside the bar.
Quinonez later returned with a machete and attacked the first victim's brother cutting him in the arm and chest.
Quinonez reportedly threw the machete into some bushes before being captured by other customers.
The victim needed multiple staples to close his wounds.
Quinonez is being held on a $50,000 bond on aggravated assault charges.

Simply amazing. Was just looking for the machete attack in Aruba.... and it pops up attacks of illegals hacking people to death in the U.S.

The 2nd article was an illegal in San Antonio who sent the police on a wild chase and here's a comment from the article:

The bail was set at $180,000, and a bail bond average cost is 10%, or $18,000 for this case. Some bail bond companies will take a down-payment and allow the borrower to pay the rest of the 10% in installments. If this guy has family or friends to help him make bail, he will probably be out of the United States soon thereafter. It's a shame the judge set the bail so low for attempted murder. Then again, a bail bond company may hesitate to get involved with such a flight risk.

I ate at Gostoso as well, very good place with a local flare and a few unusual menu items (goat, conch fritters +)

I do concur with you about the natural pool, I went once and said I wouldn't do that again, although others love it

I also love Baby Beach, and I concur about the tours too. I do it all on my own

Sorry the hear you were disappointed, but we all have different tastes. I know one person who said he didn't like it because he thought it was too boring and he wanted more of a nightlife, like the big city clubs or something. Another friend went there on our recommendation and hated it, said it rained all 7 days. We haven't see more then 6 hours of rain in about 70 days on the island

Actually we splurged on food. Ate dinner all 7 nights. Money wasn't an issue. I am foodie and I do know when a food is overpriced. Our bill in papiemento restaurant was 400USD for 2 adults and babies 1.5 year old and 4 year old with a bottle of wine.....it was one of the most overrated restaurant. Just went their because it has history but apparently once they moved to new location they are not the same. Madame Janette was good food but still overpriced, you can dine much better for the same money in quality restaurants in san francisco.

99 what resort did you stay at

divi between eagle beach and pam beach. but barely stayed in the resort...spend all day outside and after dinner basically went to sleep. didn't check casino/resort because was with kids and not big on casino games. i only bet on sports and play some live poker but didnt do any gambling that week.

but only 2 days in that resort since i couldnt get a room for all of us for the entire week. rest of the trip we stayed in a nice air bnb house that cost $350usd a night. i like the house better than the resort...probably because it was more convenient with the ids and it had a nice big pool and compound. but again we were barely there since we mostly came to sleep.

Never thought of Aruba having a Night life, and Tanner is right as over the years it has become too americanized ( sp )
If you can find one of the Local Bars, they are pretty cool.

a little shocked that you found Madame Janette's overpriced ... and think their prices are fair. But haven't been there myself in 2 years
maybe they raised their prices as it became more well known...

makes sense. I have been to Bahamas and all the Caribbean islands, etc and am hoping this is a bit different.
