It’s now five and a half hours … and counting.

Mike Francesa began his final show at WFAN by thanking the 85 guests who showed up on Thursday to bid him farewell. He also wanted to make clear that outside of Don Imus and Lawrence Taylor, he did not know who would be the guests wishing him farewell.

“Some people I had not talked to in years and people I didn’t know even would still talk to me,” Francesa said, opening the show by saying “one more time on a football Friday,” keeping any emotions in check. “Dick Ebersol who I had not spoken to in years because he was mad at me over something I said.”

“When I really think it will get to me is after the first of the year,” Francesa said, when contemplating whether or not his new reality has sunk in.

“It’s crazy and different over the holidays. No one thinks about anything but family, holidays and throw in some football. After the new year starts and you’re getting back to your routine (that’s when I’ll start to feel it) …. Not being here in front of you I am sure will be a very stark change for me. Till I go through that I am not sure how I’ll react.”

Francesa finished up the opening segment by talking about what he has accomplished over 30 years.

“This is something we created, a lot of us, something we are all proud of,” Francesa said. “We’ve built something that could last. I’ve had the best job in the world. I’ve never once considered changing my job in 30 years. I loved having this job. It was the right job for me. I was handsomely rewarded. I was successful at it.”
