Raised catholic but turned agnostic on my teens... its been a long road and for quite some time I have been fascinated by the teachings and philosophies of Tibetan Buddhism...

The changes you have to adopt to fully follow the path are harsh and in some ways unnatural... some things are quite scary to restrict oneself from.

Anyone with some experience in this religion?

Any advice?

No direct experience but really enjoyed reading some books by the Dalai Lama. I was also raised Catholic but have also been agnostic since my teens. I could see myself embracing Buddhism but am probably too lazy and old(54!) to seriously look into it.

Aren't there 4 basic principles to Buddhism?
I'm not sure, just asking.
Always been interested and intrigued.

I don't understand religion period. Whatever works for you is cool and wish you the best. Why do you feel the need to follow specific rules though? Why not just believe there may be a higher power....and live your life the best you can and be a decent person.

Depending on the school of Buddhism, converting usually requires accepting the Five Precepts:
To refrain from killing
To refrain from stealing
To refrain from lying
To refrain from being intoxicated
To refrain from improper sexual conduct

You'll flunk 4 of the 5.

You'd flunk all 5 if you weren't such a pussy and could kill something other than a beer.

What any hard assed religious ingraining does is teach discipline. Discipline that will help your life with moral structure but will also help you climb your personal ladder of accomplishment. As morality and accomplishment meld together, contentment and happiness will ensue.

Good luck on your journey to enlightenment. It's an arduous journey bit one most successful and happy people build into their lifestyle.

You can get there, man. But expect it to be hard. Discipline is hard. But it leads to the ultimate reward.

the four noble truths: 1) life is "duhka" or suffering. not just literal suffering but the suffering of the unhappiness resulting from desire. 2) desire is caused by ignorance. 3) ignorance is sufffering and 4) the cessation of suffering can be attained though yogic or meditative practice......something like that. many may find buddhism attractive because really it in not a religion and actually does not recognize a "higher" power. of course there is much more.......etc...subject to interpretation.
