Bizarro world last wk w/SF & CIN playing out of their minds which obviously caught both JAX & DET off-guard. Wk 17 is always a tough one, but I’m going for it based on what I saw last wk. I’m praying for a little luck this wk.
POW 9-7, Teasers 9-7, Overall 42-27-1.
SF -3 ½ is on a 4 gm winning streak since Garoppolo took over & spirits are high both in the front office & locker room. LT Staley has said that it’s fun playing football again & that the locker room has never been closer. Rookie HC Shanahan & rookie GM Lynch are also pleased w/the team’s play to close out the season. Rather than play for draft position, I believe SF will be trying to end the season on a high note, not only to save face but to also not lose the respect of the players. Players should be playing hard because they know this staff will be intact going into next yr & I’m sure they’ll all want to stay onboard a franchise on the rise. On the other side, LAR have locked in the div & will be resting both Goff & Gurley. McVay will also likely rest other key starters & those w/nagging injuries. They know they’ll be playing next wk regardless of this gm’s outcome, so why not give players a day off from the grind of gameday. 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] yr man Sean Mannion will be taking the reins @ QB while RB will be split between Brown, Dunbar & Davis. Although Mannion has a career 50 QBR, he has shown good play in preseason gms & the coaching staff were considering the switch to him if Goff struggled. However, w/Gurley not taking away defensive attention, & possibly key olinemen sitting out or getting limited playing time, I expect this SF “D” to stifle the LA “O” & possibly force TOs. This gm means so much more to SF in a lost season. And it appears that Garoppolo has brought a winning culture to the lowly Niners, not just w/his control of the huddle either. His passing is quick, accurate & to the rt receiver. He even adds some mobility outside the pocket. Hyde & Hoyer diced this LA “D” in their 1[SUP]st[/SUP] matchup this yr, so this should be no different w/”D” starters also likely getting rest & Garoppolo now @ QB.
