The refs thoroughly botched the end of the Panthers-Saints game

The Saints were the better team in their 31-26 win over the Panthers on Sunday in New Orleans. But that doesn’t mean their game-winning defensive stand wasn’t aided by poor officiating.
The officiating crew, led by Tony Corrente, did not have a good showing on the final drive of the game and it could have been worse if the Saints sideline had not reminded assistant officials that a late intentional grounding call against the Panthers required a 10-second run-off, leaving Carolina with only 24 seconds to score.
But that near-error should have never happened. It appears Cam Newton was outside of the pocket before releasing the pass that was deemed intentional grounding. According to the NFL rulebook, the pocket extends from one offensive tackle to the other. Here’s a look at where the Panthers tackles lined up before the snap…

And here’s where Newton released the pass…

It’s close, but it looks like Newton cleared the pocket before releasing the pass. Decide for yourself…
Ron Rivera said he did not get an explanation from the officials

Ron Rivera said he did not get an explanation from the officials…

Max Henson @PanthersMax Rivera: “I feel like it was taken away from us.”

Rivera did not get an explanation on the late intentional grounding.

Greg Olsen said assistant officials did not agree with the call…

Max Henson @PanthersMax Greg Olsen said he heard assistant officials trying to tell the head ref that it wasn’t intentional grounding. Obviously they didn’t convince him.

The Saints caught another break from the refs before the drive even started when Mike Adams’ fourth-down interception wasn’t reviewed. It appeared Adams failed to complete the catch. If the play had been reviewed and overturned, Carolina’s drive would have started its potential game-winning drive from its own 47 instead of its own 31.

4th and picked... Carolina still alive... and don't tell Mike Adams he shoulda knocked it down, those picks are $$$ for these players! #CARvsNO #Panthers #WildCard

All turnovers are reviewed under two minutes, and the play was clearly close enough to warrant a second look but it never happened.

Warren Sharp @SharpFootball How do they not know to run off 10 seconds, and how do they not review that INT for possession? These are BASIC.

With all that said, the Panthers had plenty of opportunities to win the game and failed to cash in. They have nobody but themselves to blame for the loss.

If that's Brady....they call it an incomplete pass. The fact that Cam is a mobile QB aka superman... he has to go further to throw it away in the eyes of the ref. The pocket passers get more of a break.

I agree, bad call. It was close but the QB always gets the benefit of the doubt in that situation. In fact, I would actually say it is an undercalled penalty and QBs get away with it more than often. That is twice (Redskins) the Saints got some home cooking by the refs under 2 minutes on a botched intentional grounding call. Completely changed the last 30 secs of the game and the Panthers odds of winning.

Also, under 2 minutes, that should be reviewable. If you can review a spot on the field to determine a first down why not be able to review if the passer was outside of the pocket?

as the defender is grabbing Cam he's still clearly in the pocket and it isn't even close. Whether or not he's still in the pocket as the ball is released is up for debate.

right, which is why they are debating it. has to do with where you throw the ball from not where you were initially touched to flush you out of the pocket.

as much of a sCam hater as I am I can see he's out of the pocket. I won't add "and it's not even close" because I'm not a douche-nozzle like the folks that need to use that phrase to prove a point

That interception was definitely incomplete. Between this game and Ten/KC officiating was a debacle. Also thought Ramsey int to end Buf game was incomplete as well.

I thought the officials went full time this year? Holy hell

The refs have fucked up every game so far. They were bad in the Chiefs game and later that night they admit that they screwed up,...they screwed up the Rams game also as i think they need lasix surgery,..then they screwed up the Saints game and they messed up on both teams here, they have so many stoppages of play for this its unreal, let the refs call the plays as they see them, they are human but i doubt people would complain other than like they do now...Also what is messed up is,these refs never worked together as they are all assigned by how they did in the regular season,..this is just a stupid move as if you have your same crew as you did all season, then i think it would be officiated better cause they know how their whole crew works, unlike these put together crews who never been together on the field all season
