Looking to plan a little getaway for the summer and Virginia Beach is an option.

Good place/beach? Nightlife? Recommendations?

Any opinions are appreciated.

I lived in va beach for a handful of years.. also visit somewhat frequently.

What is it that youre looking for out of a vacation? who are you going with? those would be my first questions.

Also, are you driving there? from?

Of course there are better destinations... there always is, it's about finding the right mix of travel, cost, and entertainment for you. ill be glad to give you my opinion

Never been to Virginia beach but my family did the outer banks in North Carolina about 8 years ago. One of my favorite vacations ever...

Rented a house on the beach, great waves and not too crowded. If you want a relaxing vacation where there isn't putt putt golf on every corner, Outer Banks will be great. Other than going to see some light houses, out to dinner a couple times, and wild horses we really just sat on the beach and enjoyed family time. I would go in late July if going there, water is much colder than say Florida.

We take our kids there for a few days every summer, they love it. Beach all day and plenty of stuff for them to do at night. If you wind up there, try the Isle of Capri restaurant at the Holiday Inn-North Beach. Top floor, ocean view, fantastic food, collared shirt required, pricey but worth it.

VA Beach is good for a family vacation. Water gets cold off-season, so make sure you don't try to squeeze in a discount in September, but go in July or August.

Stay at the old hotel, the Cavalier. 100 years old, one-of-a-kind place. We had our steak dinner served outside on the lawn with a cocktail or two, waiters with white gloves. Felt like Frank Sinatra.

I agree with most of the comments above

if youre going with a family, your kids will love the "beach street". I think that's what separates va beach to others besides the massive boardwalk. they do performers and shows every couple of blocks at night. kids of all ages seem to absolutely love it.

the beach is okay, certainly better beaches further south, but much worse beaches around too. I would say VA beach is a major upgrade over like Ocean City.

if youre going to party and nightlife, frankly, just go elsewhere. I think the nightlife scene lacks - but really this seems to be true of a lot of beach communities.

if you want more family time and less hassle of a busy city, goblue is right. go slightly further south into nagshead. You can rent HUGEMONGOUS houses or even normal houses for far far cheaper than VA Beach. It's not a city feel at all in NC though, can't really walk to restaurants, quiet at night, but as I age I tend to enjoy those vacations more.

in Va Beach, theres way more places to eat, grab a beer, a slice, or dine nicely in VA Beach though. Also, if youre into history, Colonial Williamsburg / Jamestown is less than an hour away. Busch Gardens, probably the nicest kept theme park in the US is there too... There is a brand new outlet mall in Norfolk, probably a 20 minute drive...

JohnnyMac is also right about not going in offseason. Not only is it dead, but the weather is not beach weather. Definitely, go Late May through Early September

Oh, I actually have a hookup there if you want. It's my mom-in-laws timeshare. It's 2nd or 3rd week of July at one of the nicer hotels (va beach has its fair share of crappy hotels)

Its a 2 BR suite with a living room and full kitchen. It went for way cheaper than the cost of 2 hotel rooms for a week, this you get 2 rooms, plus a full livingroom/kitchen for less. And the amenities at the timeshare are really nice. Like chairs and umbrellas at the beach so you don't have to drag them down. indoor and outdoor pools.

here is a great hotel in n myrtle beach i would say you would like, great places to eat at, a club with some of the hottest girls on the grand strand and all in one place, if you cant get lucky at this club you will never lol...................https://www.myrtlebeach.com/hotels/north-beach-plantation-myrtle-beach/
MB is hands down better for nightlife, strip clubs, regular clubs, and probably golf too...

but i don't think MB is that much better than VB otherwise. particularly for the extra distance for anyone that is traveling south.

well that why you go for the beach, nightlife and great food, i dont think vb beaches even have palm trees on it, plus for some reason the roads in vb are very bad on the weekend with traffic

think people have lots of reasons to go to the beach... and VA Beach certainly has palm trees.

And yes there is traffic. Virginia Beach is one of 7 cities piled up on each other. The Hampton Roads area has a population of like 2 million and often only one or two bridges or tunnels to move about. Definitely traffic as with any metropolis.
