How far away (in years) is owning one of these going to be an ABSOLUTE necessity for day to day life? I can see it coming in big cities at some point, but maybe not as quickly in very rural locations.

Just looking for opinions, not trying to start an argument... ( I'm guessing the solid majority here already have one.)

It already is pretty much. Not really sure what you are asking.

I guess you could go without internet access if you wanted, but it would suck.

I believe in the next 5 years or less we wont have smart phones. Why? We will have a wrist watch looking device that wont require a hand to hold it. (Or some similar idea). At the current rate of change in our world things are being created so fast the many things we take for granted are becoming obsolete. Take for example a car you bought today. In the next ten years you wont even be driving a car...a robot will. AI is exploding on the scene faster than most know, this coupled with Machine Learning, Deep Learning are the tip of the iceberg.

I can't see myself wearing a watch that needs to be charged... I can see the car/robot thing within 10 years like you said...But I mean when very simple things that I take for granted doing on the internet or with a credit card become replaced with a smart phone in a store.... I was behind a woman in a Target store that bought a ton of stuff and paid for it all with her smartphone... Stores have been replacing clerks for along time at checkout slowly but surely... I mean those with a smartphone will be needed for getting out of a store, becoming more normal than the exception. Just one example. These phones for seniors are a pain in the ass in my eyes.. I can see the younger generation that grew up with it being normal.

I don’t understand the question .
For the vast majority smart phones are already must haves .

That could change soon but for now that’s the case .
