Who is your favorite (professional) athlete of all time that you admire the most
and maybe why?

Mine is Bobby Orr, hockey player who was the best of the best not only
as a person, but as a player. I have watched all his tapes and interviews
and he is the one guy I would want leading my team.

Keep in mind, I'm from Alabama where we like our football.

He just retired a few days ago actually, Roy Jones Jr.

Didn't have the most exciting career because of a lack of challengers after he cleaned out several divisions but I really don't think anyone has ever boxed at a higher level relative to their peers at any other point in the history of the sport.

Ken Griffey Jr.

Watched him break into the league at 19 and loved how he played the game of baseball. Had fun and with such a sweet swing. Guy was amazing out there in CF.

Hard to argue against Pats............I'm just more into team sports.

Mr. E, I have a ton of Griffey Jr. baseball cards. Haven't looked at them for years.

A damn shame that his first loss came on a DQ... damn shame

I grew up as a kid in Rhode Island in the 60’s and my first athlete I idolized was Willie Mays. I got to see him play in person one time in Philadelphia’s old Veteran Stadium in 1970(I was 14) and he hit a home run the first time I saw him at bat. However, the athlete I admire the most is also Bobby Orr. Maybe it’s because I actually met Orr once and had a chance to play one hole of golf with him. I realized that day that Orr was not only a great athlete but a great person too. I followed the Bruins watching almost every game they played during Orr’s years and saw him play at the Garden many times. In my opinion he was the greatest hockey player of all time.

Easy, Earl Campbell. I was lucky that my Dad had season tickets for the Oilers, and I got to watch him play in person. Best game ever was the MNF game against the Dolphins. It's considered on several lists the best MNF game ever.

Earl was just awesome.

My favorite was Willie Mays....tough to pick out an athlete to admire....

Roberto Clemente and JJ Watt come close because of their work with people who need help....also admire those athletes who served their countries in time of need in the military...

Tough for me to say for certain but I'll go with John Stockton.

All-Heart + Talent.

Most amazing feat in all of sports in my opinion owning an All-time record on offense (assists) AND All time record on defense (steals).

We may never see it again in any sport.

So many great answers in this thread. Ken Griffey Jr. and Kurt Warner have to be right up there. You'll have a tough time finding a better long shot story than Kurt Warner. The guy didn't even start at QB until his Sr. year in college, and then was stocking shelves for near minimum wage at 4am a couple years after that and out of football altogether. Had you told someone that guy would someday be an NFL MVP and future Hall of Famer they would have wanted to put you in the loony bin. What an amazing story the NFL Network put together featuring him on their A Football Life.

Roy "Doc" Halladay.

Not because of his recent passing. What Stands out for me was the way he conducted himself. When the Jays traded him to Philadelphia, Halladay took out a full page ad in one of the Toronto papers thanking the fans of Toronto for their support over the years. You just don't see a lot of that from today's millionaire athletes.

I was gonna say Doc. Not favorite but most I respect and who all other athletes should model themselves after. He was one of the best at what he did, HUGE community and charity guy, conducted and presented himself wonderfully but still didnt come off as a pussy.

As for my favorite athlete (I guess to watch), he couldn't be more opposite of Doc. Allen Iverson. He is a piece of shit human being but I loved to watch him probably more than anyone else.
