Drew Brees reportedly to demand less than Jimmy Garoppolo on new deal

The New Orleans Saints and future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees will have to work out a new contract before the start of free agency. Should that not happen, Brees will become an unrestricted free agent next month.

There’s no expectation that Brees will move on to another team. Both the Saints’ brass and the quarterback himself have said he’ll return next season.

Now, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Brees and the Saints are expected to talk about a short-term deal during the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis next week. More than that, the Pro Bowler is expected to demand between $20 and $25 million annually, a number that would come in lower than what Jimmy Garoppolo received from the San Francisco 49ers earlier in the month.

“Is Brees going to break the bank as he did previously? Probably not,” Rapoport reported. “I know the Saints certainly do not see him eclipsing even really what he had last time. … It’s really about finding the sweet spot somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties to extend him, but yeah, he is going to be their quarterback.”

Garoppolo received $27.5 million per season on the most-lucrative contract ever signed by an NFL player after just seven career starts. Some had concluded that Brees would want to top that. Now, this doesn’t appear to be the case.

With less than $40 million in cap room, this is big news for a Saints team that surprised the masses by winning the NFC South last season. Depending on how Brees’ contract is structured and other roster moves, this could enable New Orleans to add key free agents to an evolving roster.

That was like what, 5 years, and then 10 as a Saint. Does he have 5 more to bookend with another team? I think so.

Brees is a smart man, and he wants to win, the same reason Brady takes less

Falco chose the opposite path, opposite results

we'll have to see how well my theory plays out for Jimmy G

Saints and Ravens results don’t seem very opposite to me.

Taking the most $ always the right play, Flacco aint losing any sleep.

Spot on. In the last decade the Ravens have actually outperformed the Saints, similar regular season records, but more playoff appearances and far deeper runs in the playoffs. I believe the Ravens have three-four AFC title appearances in that span, one SB which they won compared to the Saints one NFC title appearance and one SB.

You can make a case That Flacco isn't worth the money , but most overrated player in 10 years.. That's not a accurate statement at all..

So basically you saying if a team has a qb that makes a lot of money they can’t win a Super Bowl ?

Gotcha

I guess we should all get our Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns Super Bowl futures lined up.

So that’s why Atlanta blew that 28-3 lead.

Matt Ryan makes more money then Brady .

This shit is simple .

Just bet on the team wirh the lowest paid qb and get rich .

He's probably smart enough to know that the Ravens having an extra 4-5 million to spend on other players isn't changing things too much as long as he is at the helm.
