People can’t adjust to technology . Why do announcers still go to the games?

I’m watching the Tennis network and the announcers are in New York City announcing a tennis match from 3000 miles away.

Got me thinking .

Why do networks and especially low budget college programs hurting for money pay all these huge expenses to travel 2 or 3 people to broadcast a game when all they have to do is sit in a studio in New York and do the same thing?

In the 50s and 60s you had to .

But you no longer have to do this .

All Al Micheals does anyway is watch a monitor sitting right in front of his face when he’s at the game.

Also why do they measure for first downs with a chain?

They have so much technology with lasers . All you have to do is laser point from the marker to see if the laser crosses the football.

Done. Takes all of .1 seconds.
And most importantly it’s 100% accurate .

But yet in 2018 we have people measuring FDs with index cards.

Whats to stop the person on the back end of the chain putting the down marker in the wrong spot making for a completely inaccurate measurement ?

Its so easy to manipulate measuring first downs with chains.

The announcers can see things that the cameras aren't showing.

They can set up a studio with monitors from all different angles .

In basketball you can see all 10 players on tv 90% of the time

There's some value in having the broadcast team there, describing the crowd, interviewing players, feeling the vibe. Compared to the revenue it's not like the travel is a significant expense.

i agree with harry, you feed off the crowd as an announcer, provide insight from practices or interviews leading up to the game. as stated above, overall cost is pretty low and can budgeted into promotion for airlines or hotel that put up your staff

Why not get rid of the home plate ump in baseball?
Have lasers call balls and strikes...I think it
Would take away from the game

I agree that baseball would lose something, but it's not even close to the same thing as spot of the football and the first down marker. The human ball/strike calls give baseball some of its homespun charm, its tradition, its uniqueness. Humans measuring for first downs in such an arbitrary fashion is not something anyone would miss.

Baseball needs bigger strike zone and hockey needs bigger goals

Anyone can be a goalie in soccer and hockey. In soccer, there are usually about 4 legit shots on goal during a match and 1-2 get through.

Take a sport like Golf

Guys arent even anywhere near the action
.

Youd need 54 1 man announcers for an 18 hole event at each tee green and middle fairway etc..

There have been sports reporters fired for writing articles about events they didn't attend in person. They watched the game on TV.

It's an ethical question.

I always thought they should put microchips in each end of a football so if it crosses the first down marker or goal line a light would come on, kinda like when the 24 sec or game clock goes off in hoops

How old is the average team owner.... I'm an old fart myself, but maybe younger than Jerry Jones of the Cowboys... Agree modern technology would help.

For mid major college bball maybe it would be a cost saver but for an NFL game to not have the announcers there would be the equivalent to someone buying a Rolls Royce and never bothering to do the oil change, or something like that.

They pay like 40 million per NFL game, flying the announcing crew there isn't much of an issue.
