    Friday MLB Betting Preview

    Baltimore Orioles vs Atlanta Braves

This week has been all about interleague play for both the Orioles and Braves as Atlanta was able to split a two-game set north of the border with Toronto, while Baltimore dropped two of three in Washington. These two meet in Atlanta tonight for the start of a three-game weekend series as Baltimore continues life without a DH in their order.

On paper this series looks like a complete mismatch as Atlanta has more than double the wins (43) that Baltimore has (21) this year, but that doesn't always mean it will be a whitewash on the field. The Braves come in as heavy favorites tonight against this Orioles team, so is it worth it to swallow all that chalk?

Odds: Baltimore (+157) vs Atlanta (-175); Total set at 8.5

Right off the bat it's hard not to notice the reverse line movement we've already seen on this game as Atlanta actually opened up in the -200 range and has since come down significantly despite more than 80% of the action coming their way. That's quite a move for any game and it's interesting to say the least here, because it's easy to see why the Braves are the ones getting all the support. They are the much better team in the standings sure, but they are up against Baltimore starter Alex Cobb this evening who has just been dreadful for the O's.

Cobb has a 2-9 SU record on the year and that basically accounts for all his starts as Baltimore is just 2-10 SU in his 12 starts in total. Cobb has a 7.14 ERA on the year thanks to giving up 92 hits in just 63 IP, as it hasn't seemed to matter who he's been up against he's been getting hit hard. Yet the bettors who have steamed this line in Baltimore's favor have to see something in Cobb to make them believe he's got a better chance to win tonight than this price suggests, and given that he's pitched at least 6+ innings in three of his last four starts may be a sign that he's turning the corner. All three of those 6+ IP games have come against NL opponents as well meaning that maybe a lack of familiarity with Cobb by opposing offenses may be just what he needs to get back on track.

Atlanta counters with lefty Sean Newcomb tonight and his numbers couldn't be more different than the ones Cobb has. Newcomb enters play tonight with a 2.70 ERA on the year, has allowed just 58 hits in 80 IP and has a 8-2 SU record. Given the idea that so many MLB bettors love to handicap games based on the starting pitching matchup, you'd have expected plenty of action on Atlanta like there is, but the line move we've seen wouldn't be expected. That's what makes that line move all the more intriguing. Are you going to pile on with the masses on the Braves now that the price is better? Or plug your nose and ride the line move with a very bad team like Baltimore?

For me, I'm going to close my eyes and ride with the line move on Baltimore as I don't think it's as stinky as it needs to be to plug your nose. Yes, Baltimore is a very bad team this year and have arguably their worst pitcher on the hill tonight, but Cobb has had some level of success against NL squads of late and for as good as the Braves season has been to-date, I'm still not a total believer in this team overall. Having them priced in the -200 range (at open) seems like some over-inflation, and although I may have missed the best of the number with Baltimore, I still think there is some meat on the bone there at the current odds.

As an organization the Braves are just 6-21 SU in their last 27 at home against AL opponents, and that includes a 0-5 SU run when a righty is on the hill for that AL squad. Put the reverse line move in favor of the Orioles on top of that, and I'll be rolling with the underdogs from Baltimore tonight as I think we see them show up and at worst make a game of it this evening.

    Best Bet: Baltimore ML

Seattle Mariners At Boston Red Sox

The Seattle Mariners have cooled off after one of the hottest streaks of any team this season, and their losing ways may continue on Saturday. Seattle will be on the road against the powerful Boston Red Sox in a game that features two of the winningest teams in the American League.

Even though the Mariners only have three fewer losses than Boston this season there is a pretty wide gulf between the teams. The Red Sox are easily superior and also have the home field advantage in this matchup. Boston should be a comfortable favorite to come away with the victory in MLB gambling.

The MLB Baseball contest will be held at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. The game will take place on Saturday, June 23rd, 2018, at 7:15 p.m. ET. The game will be nationally televised on FOX.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

    Odds Analysis

The odds have not yet been released but it is virtually certain the Red Sox will be the favorites in this matchup. They have gone 23-11 at home on the season and will aim for a victory. The Mariners have a 46-29 overall record on the season, which is the fourth-best mark in the A.L., but with only a plus-14 run-differential, which is a sign of regression moving forward.

    Probable Pitchers

The Red Sox are projected to send left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez to the mound. He is 9-1 on the season with a 3.59 ERA. Rodriguez has 90 strikeouts in only 77 innings pitched and has limited his walks, which is a great combination. The Red Sox have been extremely successful on the season when Rodriguez starts and hope to keep that going.

The Mariners will send Mike Leake to the hill. He is 7-4 on the year with a 4.47 ERA. Leake gave up five runs last time out, which snapped a five-start streak of allowing two earned runs or fewer. He doesn’t have huge strikeout numbers and could have some trouble silencing the potent Boston offense.

    Player To Watch

J.D. Martinez -- The Red Sox had a good team last season but was missing some thump in the middle of its lineup. Martinez solved that issue, as he signed in free agency and has delivered perfectly. He is batting .315 with 22 home runs, 55 RBIs and 48 runs scored on the season. The Red Sox have a lot of other talented hitters, highlighted by Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts, but Martinez has been integral in adding the thunder within the heart of the order.

If the table-setters get on for him in this game, Martinez could be looking at another game-changing dinger. Leake must be very careful when pitching to him because he doesn’t have the velocity to overpower a hitter of this caliber and has to hit his spots.

    Free MLB ATS Picks

The Red Sox are the easy choice in this one. The Mariners played above their heads for a long stretch and will be hoping to hold on to a playoff spot moving forward. Look for a solid outing from Rodriguez to lead the way to an easy win in MLB wagering.

The scoring total will likely come in around nine runs and the “over” would be the right play if that happens because the Red Sox could very well tee off against Leake and the Seattle bullpen. The Mariners better get some big hits because they don’t have the same consistent attack as Boston.

MLB ATS Pick: Boston Red Sox 7, Seattle Mariners 4

MLB Weekend Series Prices Best Bets

After going 2-0 with my weekend series wagers a couple of weeks ago, last week's plays split the board right down the middle. Philadelphia was able to claim the final two games of their series with Milwaukee, while the exact opposite happened to the Angels as they dropped their final two contests with Oakland. It was a “no harm, no foul” weekend with those plays so it's on to this weekend's matchups.

This weekend there aren't as many matchups to breakdown as there were a handful of four-game series that got going yesterday, but there are still two series plays where I think we can catch a winner or two. Let's get right to them.

LA Dodgers (-145) vs New York Mets (+125)

The L.A Dodgers hit a bit of a snag this week having dropped two of three to the Cubs, but after having Thursday off I like them to bounce back strong this weekend against a Mets team that deserves to be faded nearly every day.

L.A opens up as a -160 favorite on Friday night with Alex Wood going up against Zack Wheeler and they also have a favorable scheduling spot for that Game 1 as well. L.A got some rest and relaxation time in on Thursday during their travel day, but New York played an afternoon matinee in Colorado (lost 6-4) and then travelled back home for the first time in 10+ days. That was the end of a 10-game road trip for New York that saw them go 3-7 SU overall, and I've never got a problem fading a squad – especially one as suspect as the Mets – in their first game off a long road trip with a taxed bullpen that got plenty of work in Colorado the past few days.

After that we've got Saturday's matchup of Jacob deGrom vs Caleb Ferguson where without question the Mets will be laying significant juice, followed by the all lefty matchup of Jason Vargas vs Rich Hill on Sunday. This series wager appears as though it will come down to that Sunday game – one I expect L.A to be the favorites in -
but I also wouldn't write off the Dodgers that quickly against deGrom. Sure, deGrom has been a bright spot for New York this year, but the Dodgers are the defending NL Champs and have more than enough firepower in their lineup to light him deGrom up if he doesn't have his best stuff. At -145 I'm getting the much better team here that could be laying that price or higher in two of the three games individually. Tough to pass that up.

Best Bet: L.A Dodgers to win the series (-145)

Texas Rangers (+215) vs Minnesota Twins (-255)

Right from the top, this is a series price I just really don't get. Both teams enter this series with nearly the same amount of wins – Texas has 32 while Minnesota has 33 – and while the pitching matchups on Saturday and Sunday do favor Minnesota, I just don't see how they should have this much chalk attached to their name.

Texas comes into this series having won five in a row after sweeping Kansas City to start this week and have allowed 3 runs or less in four of those five victories. This Rangers pitching staff that was getting lit up for the better part of May and early June seems to have found something of late and now they look to continue that success in a pitcher-friendly part in Minnesota. At better than 2-1 odds here, that's a risk worth considering at bare minimum.

Then we've got a Rangers offense who have scored 4+ in five of their last six overall and have a few guys in their lineup that have had success against the likes of Jose Berrios and Jake Odorizzi (Minnesota's weekend starters) throughout their careers. Taking a shot that they can get at least one of those two games isn't a horrible idea, especially if they can win on Friday in what is essentially a toss-up game with the odds sitting at -105 for Texas and -115 for Minnesota as of this writing. Without question the value is there on Texas to take them at this price this weekend and for someone who is never shy about backing underdogs, this is a spot I've got to jump on.

Best Bet: Texas Rangers to win series (+215)

As far as the other series' are concerned this weekend, here's how I see them breaking down

*Number of games won in brackets

    Philadelphia (1) vs Washington (2)
New York Yankees (2) vs Tampa Bay (1)
    Seattle (1) vs Boston (2)
    Detroit (1) vs Cleveland (2)
Baltimore (2) vs Atlanta (1) – Baltimore's a juicy underdog if you can stomach the risk
Kansas City (1) vs Houston (2)
    Miami (1) vs Colorado (2)

Bellinger's grand slam lifts Dodgers over Mets for 5-2 win
    June 22, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Cody Bellinger hit a grand slam to break a scoreless tie in the sixth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the sinking New York Mets 5-2 on Friday night behind Alex Wood's effective pitching.

Yasiel Puig added a solo home run in the ninth, and the defending NL champions won their 10th straight against the Mets dating to May 2016. Los Angeles has outscored New York 75-20 in those games, winning each of the past eight by at least three runs - a first in Dodgers history against any opponent, according to STATS.

Wood (3-5) outdueled Zack Wheeler (2-6), allowing two runs and six hits in six innings to win his second consecutive start. The left-hander with the funky delivery struck out seven and walked one.

Kenley Jansen fanned two in a perfect ninth for his 19th save.

New York wasted a dazzling catch by center fielder Michael Conforto that saved a run in the third. After starting the season 11-1, the Mets lost for the 21st time in 27 games to fall a season-worst 11 games under .500.

    RED SOX 14, MARINERS 10

BOSTON (AP) - J.D. Martinez homered and drove in five, and Boston rallied from a five-run deficit to beat Seattle despite a monster game from Nelson Cruz.

Cruz had a pair of three-run homers and drove in seven, but the Mariners still lost their season-worst fifth straight game, including three earlier this week at Yankee Stadium. Seattle led 4-0 and 10-5 before a wild Red Sox rally fueled by RBIs from eight different players.

Martinez went 4 for 5, including a two-run homer in the sixth and two doubles.

Reliever Matt Barnes (1-2) got the win with one scoreless inning. Juan Nicasio (1-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits in one-third of a lousy seventh inning.

The only flaw to the second half of the game for Boston: shortstop Xander Bogaerts left in the seventh with a sprained index finger on his left hand.

    ORIOLES 10, BRAVES 7, 15 INNINGS

ATLANTA (AP) - Manny Machado hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the 15th inning after each team staged dramatic ninth-inning rallies.

The Braves surrendered six runs in the ninth, and then scored four times in the bottom of the inning.

Peter Moylan, Atlanta's eighth pitcher, hit Craig Gentry to open the 15th. Gentry moved to second on Austin Wynns' sacrifice.

With first base open, the Braves pitched to Machado and the slugger lined his 19th homer into the Orioles' bullpen. Moylan (0-1) gave up another run on singles by Colby Rasmus and Jonathan Schoop.

Mike Wright Jr. (1-0), Baltimore's seventh pitcher, threw two scoreless innings.

    REDS 6, CUBS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Eugenio Suarez hit a go-ahead homer off Jose Quintana in the fifth inning, and Cincinnati held on for its fifth straight victory.

The Reds have won the first two games in the series, a recent rarity in the rivalry. It's only the second time in the last two years that they've won back-to-back games in a series against the Cubs. Chicago is 43-21 against Cincinnati over the last four seasons.

Suarez's two-run shot in the fifth inning off Quintana (6-6) gave him a team-high 16 homers and put the Reds ahead 4-3.

Javier Baez drove in a run with a bunt single off Luis Castillo (5-8), and Kyle Schwarber followed with a two-run homer, his third in four games. Castillo went 5 2/3 innings for his first victory since May 24, ending a streak of four straight losses.

Raisel Iglesias retired the side in the ninth for his 12th save in 14 chances.

    BREWERS 2, CARDINALS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jesus Aguilar homered to break up rookie Jack Flaherty's no-hit bid in the seventh inning, then homered again in the ninth to lift Milwaukee over St. Louis.

Both teams got just three hits. The benches and bullpens briefly cleared in the eighth after Eric Sogard slid into St. Louis shortstop Yairo Munoz, who caught a wide throw on a bunt play in the eighth.

Cardinals reliever Bud Norris (3-2) started the ninth by striking out Travis Shaw. Aguilar followed with a drive an opposite-field drive to right for his 16th home run.

Corey Knebel (1-0) pitched the ninth for the NL Central leaders.

    PHILLIES 12, NATIONALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Odubel Herrera homered for the fifth straight game and finished with four hits, helping Philadelphia rout Washington.

Herrera hit a tiebreaking two-run shot in the third for his 13th homer, matching the club record for consecutive games with a long ball. He has connected in six of his last seven overall.

Herrera is hitting .472 (17 for 36) with six homers, 11 runs and 10 RBIs in his last eight games.

Carlos Santana homered and drove in four runs for Philadelphia, which has won five of six. Santana delivered a two-run single in the first, a two-run homer in the sixth and walked twice.

Zach Eflin (5-2) allowed baserunners in every inning except the first, but limited the damage to two runs over five innings to win his fourth straight start.

Washington's Tanner Roark (3-8) gave up six runs in 4 1/3 innings.

    RAYS 2, YANKEES 1

ST. PETERSBURG. Fla. (AP) - Six Tampa Bay pitchers combined on a five-hitter, and Tampa Bay beat New York.

Utilizing a bullpen day, the Rays improved to 14-31 against teams with a .500 or better record with the victory over the team with the majors' best record.

Winner Ryan Yarbrough (6-3) entered in the second and allowed one hit in 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Sergio Romo worked the ninth for his fifth save in nine chances.

Willy Adames put the Rays ahead 1-0 with a run-scoring single off CC Sabathia (4-3) in the fourth. Sabathia allowed two runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

    ANGELS 2, BLUE JAYS 1

ANAHEIM (AP) - Andrew Heaney (4-5) pitched seven solid innings in another quality start, allowing just one run and nine hits. The left-hander has gone at least seven innings in three of his last four starts.

The Angels got on the scoreboard with a two-run first inning, giving Heaney all the support he would need. Justin Upton drew a two-out walk and Albert Pujols doubled him in. Luis Valbuena singled in Pujols from second to give the Angels a 2-0 lead.

Cam Bedrosian threw a perfect eighth in relief, and Blake Parker pitched a perfect ninth to earn his ninth save.

Marco Estrada (4-7) had a fine start, too. He allowed just two earned runs and three hits in seven innings and struck out seven.

    RANGERS 8, TWINS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Mike Minor threw six solid innings, Shin-Soo Choo homered and Texas beat Minnesota for its sixth consecutive victory.

Bouncing back from a rough May, Minor (5-4) has thrown three straight quality starts for the first time since throwing six straight in 2014 for Atlanta. He allowed one run and three hits, lowering his ERA for June to 2.84.

Choo's two-run shot off Fernando Romero (3-3) made it 4-0 in the fifth. It was his second homer on Texas' six-game road trip.

Minor faced the minimum number of batters through five innings despite a first-inning single by Brian Dozier to deep left. Dozier tried to stretch for second, but Joey Gallo had a good jump and easily threw him out to end the inning.

    DIAMONDBACKS 2, PIRATES 1, 13 INNINGS

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ketel Marte's two-out single in the 13th inning led Arizona to a victory over Pittsburgh.

Marte's liner into center field off Tyler Glasnow (1-2) scored Jon Jay from second base as the NL West-leading Diamondbacks won for the fourth time in five games. Jay walked to start the rally, then advanced to second on a two-out wild pitch before Marte followed an intentional walk to David Peralta with his winning hit.

Andrew Chafin (1-0) pitched one scoreless inning for the win, and T.J. McFarland notched the first save of his six-year career with a perfect 13th.

The game was scoreless until both teams scored an unearned run in the 11th following a pitcher's duel between Arizona's Patrick Corbin and Pittsburgh's Ivan Nova.

    ROYALS 1, ASTROS 0

HOUSTON (AP) - Rookie Rosell Herrera kept the game scoreless with a home-run robbery in the eighth inning and hit an RBI triple in the ninth, and struggling Kansas City beat Houston.

Herrera helped the Royals end a nine-game skid by bringing back Alex Bregman's would-be homer. The right fielder reached over the short outfield wall to snag the first out in the eighth.

Adalberto Mondesi then singled off Ken Giles (0-2) to start the ninth, stole second and took third on a flyout by Whit Merrifield. Herrera then sent a ball to center field to score Mondesi and make it 1-0.

Danny Duffy pitched six innings of two-hit ball for the Royals, and the bullpen didn't allow another knock. Justin Grimm (1-2) pitched a scoreless eighth and Tim Hill threw a perfect ninth for his first save.

    ROCKIES 11, MARLINS 3

DENVER (AP) - Jon Gray struck out 12 in seven dominant innings, Nolan Arenado homered in a six-run fourth, and Colorado won its fourth in a row by beating Miami.

It was Gray's 12th career 10-plus strikeout game and the fourth this season. He had at least two strikeouts in five of his innings, including striking out the side in the sixth. Gray (7-7) walked none and withstood a solo homer in the third by Derek Dietrich, who drove a 2-0 pitch the opposite way into the left-field bleachers.

Arenado had three hits, including his team-leading 17th homer, a two-run drive. Tom Murphy had two doubles among his three hits and two RBIs.

Wei-Yin Chen (2-4) matched Gray through three innings, but then ran into trouble in the fourth - some of it not of his own doing. Second baseman Starlin Castro bobbled the ball after getting a relay throw, allowing Ian Desmond to score from third with the first of the Rockies' six runs in the inning.

    INDIANS 10, TIGERS 0

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Shane Bieber struck out nine in a career-high seven innings, Yonder Alonso hit a grand slam and Cleveland beat Detroit for its fifth straight victory.

Edwin Encarnacion also connected for Cleveland, which leads second-place Detroit by six games in the AL Central. Encarnacion finished with three RBIs, and Francisco Lindor added a solo shot.

The 23-year-old Bieber (2-0) allowed four hits and walked one in his third major league start. The Tigers only pushed two runners past first base in his 97-pitch gem, stranding them both at third.

Bieber became the third Indians pitcher with six or more strikeouts in his first three big league appearances, joining Herb Score (eight in 1955) and Luis Tiant (three in 1964).

Tigers right-hander Mike Fiers (5-4) surrendered four runs in five innings. He has one win in his last seven starts.

    PADRES 6, GIANTS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Clayton Richard (7-6) pitched three-hit ball over six innings for his fourth consecutive win. He retired 17 straight during one stretch, allowed only two runners past second base and struck out four.

Eric Hosmer and Manuel Margot each had two hits and two RBIs as the Padres snapped a five-game skid. Travis Jankowski and Cory Spangenberg added two hits apiece.

Padres manager Andy Green used three relievers to get out of the seventh. Kirby Yates allowed a leadoff single in the eighth before setting down the next three. Brad Hand retired all three batters he faced in the ninth.

Chris Stratton (8-5) allowed three runs and nine hits in six innings.

ATHLETICS 11, WHITE SOX 2, FIRST GAME

WHITE SOX 6, ATHLETICS 4, SECOND GAME

CHICAGO (AP) - Lucas Giolito (5-7) pitched into the eighth inning before Xavier Cedeno worked out of a jam, and Chicago snapped an eight-game losing streak by beating Oakland to salvage a doubleheader split.

The White Sox bounced back after getting pounded behind a pair of three-run homers by Franklin Barreto in the first game. They stopped their worst skid since a nine-game rut last July and ended Oakland's season-high win streak at five.

Joakim Soria retired all three batters in the ninth for his 11th save in 13 opportunities. Chris Bassitt (0-3) got tagged for five runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings in the late game.

Barreto connected against James Shields (2-9) to cap a four-run second inning and off Luis Avilan in the eighth. Oakland's Sean Manaea (7-6) went seven innings, allowing one run and five hits.

    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

    — Four NFL referees have retired since the end of last season. 4 out of 17.

    — Blue Jays’ closer Roberto Osuna gets suspended for 75 games; he can return August 4.

    — Bryce Harper agreed to be in the Home Run Derby in Washington next month.

    — Chris Webber was traded four times in his career, which raises some questions.

    — Carmelo Anthony won’t opt out of his $27.9M deal for next year because, well, he’s not stupid.

    — NHL Draft is in Dallas this year; they move it around the country. Smart.

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

    13) NBA Summer League is coming up on July 6; the games are in Las Vegas, and you can bet on them. Caution is advised.

Few years ago, I’m at the Summer League in Cox Pavilion at UNLV and I’m sitting behind a guy who looks like a bodybuilder. Minnesota-Cleveland game is about to begin, and this fellow has bet on the Timberwolves. He is telling his buddy how Minnesota won easily the day before and how they should crush the Cavaliers in this game.

    12) One small problem; Minnesota had 17 or 18 guys on its roster; the 8 or 9 who played the day before, when they won big, weren’t the 8 or 9 who were playing in this game. Cleveland wins by 8 or 10 points, which reminded me of Oscar Madison’s great quote from The Odd Couple:

“There is no such thing as a sure thing. Thats why they call it gambling.”

    11) Colorado Rockies set an unenviable major league record by allowing 8+ runs in nine straight home games, a streak that ended Thursday.

    10) Chad Bettis is having a bad season; he has a 9.69 RA in his last five starts, a 5.23 ERA for the season, but if you bet on the Rockies in the first 5 innings of all his starts, you would be 13-1-1.

Colorado is 9-6 in all his starts; over is 7-6-2; their bullpen has been lousy in his starts.

    9) The new sports book at the Borgata in Atlantic City, NJ got really good reviews on ***********.

Sadly, here in New York State, our politicians have dragged their feet, so it looks like that there may not be any legal sports betting here until 2019. They’re losing a lot of money, since people will drive to New Jersey and spend their money in restaurants/bars in the Garden State.

    8) NBA isn’t the only place for aspiring pro hoopers; guy named Malcolm Thomas, who used to play for San Diego State, is making $1.2M a year playing over in Russia.

    7) Jameis Winston is making $705,000 this year, so his 3-game suspension will cost him 17.6% of that, or $124,080. Doubtful he will appeal, because if he did and it stretched out into 2019, then it could get way more expensive.

Winston will make $20.4M in 2019; 17.6% of that is $3,590,400. You do the math.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is Tampa Bay’s backup QB, by the way. He is 48-70-1 as an NFL starter, 2-1 with Tampa Bay last year. He’s played for seven different NFL teams.

    6) Baseball’s All-Star break is a week later than usual this year, which means the NBA Summer League doesn’t coincide with the four days without baseball. That not good.

    5) Barry Trotz is the 7th NHL coach to leave his team right after winning the Stanley Cup, most of any sport. Only one of those seven teams repeated as champ with their new coach, and that was after the first coach was diagnosed with brain cancer.

    4) It is good to know people: ESPN has an NBA reporter named Brian Windhorst; his mom was Lebron James’ grade school Math teacher.

    3) Birmingham, AL has a team in the new AAF; they’re only city that had teams in the WFL, USFL, WLAF, and XFL.

Here are the eight cities that will have teams in the AAF, a spring football league starting next year: Atlanta, Birmingham, Memphis, Orlando. Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Diego.

    2) NFL referee Gene Steratore is retiring and will likely land at CBS as a rules analyst- he worked the Super Bowl in February, so good time for him to move on. Wonder if he will keep refereeing big-time college basketball games.

    1) In their last 17 series, San Diego Padres are 1-16 in series openers, 25-10 in other games.

    Haves and Have Nots
There have been plenty of haves and have nots in baseball this season. There are four teams in particular who are awful, and great fade candidates night in and night out. It's no surprise that some of the worst teams in terms of run differential are also the worst in the majors as far as winning percentage. The Royals, Marlins, Orioles and Rangers are each in last place in their respective divisions, and the White Sox would also be in the basement in each of the other five divisions. Texas has actually been showing some signs of life in the win-loss column lately, chopping down their differential. But the other four teams are awful and showing no signs of turning things around. Enjoy!

    Looking Ahead

    Saturday, June 23

The Padres and Giants will continue their series in San Francisco. San Diego has had magic in the third game of a series, going 10-2 across their past 12 Game 3 of a series. However San Diego will be hard pressed to pick up the victory, as they're just 7-20 in the past 27 road games against a left-handed starter. They're also 0-4 in the past four vs. LHP. The Giants counter with Andrew Suarez, but they're 1-4 in his past five starts at home and 2-6 in his past eight overall. San Francisco is 10-3 across their past 13 at home while going 12-2 in their past 14 vs. RHP. The 'over' has connected in five of the past seven in this series.

If the Dodgers and Mets are able to get their game in (see below), the Dodgers could stay hot against the scuffling Mets. Los Angeles has posted a 9-1 record over the past 10 road games against a right-handed starting pitcher. They're also 8-3 in the past 11 overall vs. RHP while going 23-9 in the past 32 overall. After a slow start L.A. is rolling along and finally living up to preseason expectations. The Mets started out red hot but have been a dumpster fire lately. They're just 16-36 over the past 52 games while going 9-24 in their past 33 home games against a team with a winning record. They're also 7-20 in the past 27 home games. The Mets have really let down Jacob deGrom, as they're just 2-10 in his past 12 starts at home, and 1-5 in the past six overall. Citi Field has been a second home for the Dodgers, as they're 6-0 in their past six visits while going 11-1 in the past 12 meetings overall against the Dodgers. The 'under' has cashed in deGrom's past six starts against L.A., while going 4-1 in the past five battles in Queens.

In the only west coast game, the Blue Jays look to right the ship after a 2-1 setback to the Angels. The Jays haven't fared well on Saturday, going 2-8 in their past 10 on the day. They're also just 1-10 across the past 11 road outings while going 0-4 in the past four against American League West foes. They have also struggled with Marcus Stroman on the hill, going 0-4 in his past four starts while going 1-4 in his past five on the road. On the flip side, the Halos have been hot with a 7-1 mark across the past eight home outings. They're also 6-0 in the past six home games against a team with a losing record and 8-1 in their past nine home games vs. RHP. The 'under' is 3-1-1 in the past five meetings, while going 5-2-2 in the past nine in Anaheim.

    Weather Report
The weather will affect the Steel City all afternoon, finally clearing up around 7 p.m. ET or so. The Diamondbacks and Pirates could have their 4:05 p.m. start delayed or interrupted by rain if they can get started. The winds will be blowing out to lft field at a 11-14 mph clip. Rain will also rear its ugly head in the nation's capital, affecting the Phillies and Nationals. There is a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms until 6 p.m., with a 30 percent chance for the following two hours. There could be delay in this one, too.

Rain won't be an issue in Atlanta and Cincinnati, but both parks will experience winds blowing out to left field from 10-13 mph.

The nationally televised games on Saturday night between the Mariners-Red Sox and Dodgers-Mets will experience thunderstorms. There are 50 percent or greater chances of rain in both cities well into the night. It wouldn't be surprising to see each battle pushed back to Sunday as part of a potential day-night doubleheader.

    Sunday, June 24
Luke Weaver and Jhoulys Chacin will lock horns on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals have posted an impressive 9-3 record across his past 12 road starts, while going 10-4 in his past 14 inside the division. However, they're 1-4 in his past five when working on four days of rest. Milwaukee has been on fire with Chacin on the bump, going 10-2 in his past 12 starts, including 5-0 in his past five starts at home. They're just 10-2 on his past 12 starts on grass, while going 4-1 in the past five inside the division. The 'under' is 4-0 in Weaver's past four on four days of rest, but the 'over' is 4-0 in his past four on the road. The under is the prevailing trend for Chacin and the Brewers. The under is 21-5-1 in the past 27 Sunday games, while going 5-1 in Chacin's past six starts at home and 7-2 in his past nine overall.

The Royals wrap up their set against the Astros and they'll face a familiar face, Justin Verlander. He hasn't faced the Royals this season, but he is 4-3 with a 3.28 ERA in 10 starts against Kansas City since the start of the 2015 season. The Royals are batting just .238 against Verlander over those 10 outings, walking 11 times and striking out 67 times across 71 1/3 innings. Kansas City is just 1-5 in the past six Sunday games, and they enter Saturday with a 5-21 mark in the past 26 against AL West foes. They're also 2-9 in the past 11 starts by Jason Hammel against AL West clubs.

The Phillies and Nationals will be playing under the lights in the nation's capital, and it could be the second end of a doubleheader if Mother Nature washes out Saturday's contest. The Phillies have closed out a series very well lately, going 4-0 in the past four in Game 3 of a series. While they're 1-4 in Nick Pivetta's past five starts, and 0-5 in his past five when working on five days of rest, they're 5-1 in his past six on a Sunday. They're also 8-2 in Pivetta's past 10 starts against a team with a winning record. Washington has managed a 1-4 mark across their past five on Sunday, while entering play Saturday with a 15-7 mark in the past 22 against a winning side.

    Weather Report
The weather will be tricky for the M's-Red Sox game on Sunday afternoon, with a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms from 2 p.m. ET through the early-evening hours. In Atlanta, there is a 30 percent chance of rain from 2-4 p.m. ET for the O's-Braves finale.

In Cleveland rain won't be an issue, but the wind will be the biggest factor. Gusts from 11-14 mph will be blowing from left to right field. Winds will also be howling at a 15-18 mph clip from home plate to the left-center field power alley in San Francisco for the Padres-Giants battle.

LEADING OFF: Herrera's HR streak, Kershaw back, Mariners dip
    June 23, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

    PHILLY SPECIAL

Odubel Herrera has homered in five straight games, tying a Philadelphia record. Chase Utley (twice in 2008), Bobby Abreu (2005), Mike Schmidt (1979) and Dick Allen (1969) also connected five in row for the Phillies. Ken Griffey, Jr. (1993), Don Mattingly (1987) and Dale Long (1956) share the major league record with homers in eight consecutive games.

Herrera now takes aim against rookie right-hander Erick Fedde (0-2, 5.63 ERA) at Nationals Park.

    CITI SURPRISE

Clayton Kershaw is set to make an unexpected return from the disabled list, starting for the Dodgers in a marquee matchup against Mets ace Jacob deGrom. Kershaw has been sidelined since June 1 with a lower back strain. The three-time Cy Young Award winner and 2014 NL MVP originally was scheduled to make a rehab start Saturday with Triple-A Oklahoma City at Omaha, but heavy rain in the forecast caused the Dodgers to change plans. There's rain forecast at Citi Field, too, but LA manager Dave Roberts said the team took that into account and will have rookie lefty Caleb Ferguson (0-1, 7.59 ERA) ready in reserve.

    ROUGH ROAD

The Mariners have lost a season-worst five in a row, including an 0-4 start to their East Coast trip. After getting swept at Yankee Stadium this week, they blew a 10-5 lead and dropped the series opener at Fenway Park 14-10. Mike Leake (7-4, 4.47 ERA) starts next for Seattle, having lost last weekend to Boston. Red Sox lefty Eduardo Rodriguez (9-1, 3.59) has won a career-high six straight starts, including a victory in Seattle last Sunday.

    TRY AGAIN

Blue Jays righty Marcus Stroman is set to come off the disabled list and go for his first win of the season. He is 0-5 with a 7.71 ERA in seven starts, and hasn't pitched since May 8 because of shoulder fatigue. He was 13-9 with a 3.09 ERA last year.

    THUMPING

Cleveland is 5-0 against the Tigers at Progressive Field this season, outscoring them 28-5. Yonder Alonso hit a grand slam in a 10-0 romp Friday night. Detroit lefty Francisco Liriano (3-2, 3.90 ERA) will come off the disabled list to take on Trevor Bauer (6-5, 2.50 ERA). The Indians have won five in a row overall.

Font, Rays shut down Yanks; DeSclafani slams Reds past Cubs
    June 23, 2018

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Wilmer Font worked into the sixth inning to get his first major league win, Willy Adames homered and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 4-0 on Saturday.

Font (1-3) allowed three hits, one walk and struck out four over 5 2/3 innings. Four relievers completed a four-hitter.

Adames had an RBI single during a two-run second and added a solo homer in the seventh off Sonny Gray (5-5).

The Rays have won the first two of a three-game series against the Yankees, who have the best record in the majors.

New York (50-24), coming off a three-game sweep over Seattle, is the only team in the big leagues not to have dropped more than two straight games this year. This is the latest the Yankees have gone into a season without losing three in a row since August 1954.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Anthony DeSclafani hit the first grand slam by a Cincinnati pitcher in 59 years, helping the last-place Reds beat the Chicago Cubs for their sixth consecutive victory.

It was Cincinnati's third slam in five days and major league-leading seventh of the season, two short of the record set in 2002. The last Reds pitcher to hit a grand slam was Bob Purkey against the Cubs on Aug. 1, 1959. DeSclafani (3-1) also pitched a season-high 6 1/3 innings and allowed three hits, struck out three and walked four.

Tucker Barnhart and Joey Votto also went deep in front of a crowd of 36,818, Cincinnati's largest since opening day. Votto hit a three-run shot off backup catcher Chris Gimenez in the eighth.

Willson Contreras and Ben Zobrist homered for Chicago, which has lost three straight. Luke Farrell (2-3), a former Red and the son of ex-Red Sox manager and current Reds scout John Farrell, was charged with three runs and two hits in his second career start.

    MARINERS 7, RED SOX 2

BOSTON (AP) - Mike Leake pitched eight shutout innings, Mitch Haniger drove in three runs and the Seattle Mariners snapped a season-high five-game losing streak with a victory over the Red Sox.

Nelson Cruz had three hits and scored twice a night after hitting two homers and driving in seven runs for Seattle, which went on its skid after beating Boston two straight at home last weekend. Leake (8-4) gave up three singles, struck out five and walked two six days after he allowed five runs and took the loss against the Red Sox at Safeco Field. Edwin Diaz gave up two runs in the ninth.

Eduardo Rodriguez (9-2) gave up five runs, four earned, in four innings, snapping his personal six-game win streak. The Red Sox were 13-1 in his starts this season.

    RANGERS 9, TWINS 6

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Adrian Beltre and Robinson Chirinos homered to help Yovani Gallardo win for the first time since last July as the Texas Rangers beat the Minnesota Twins.

Delino DeShields had two hits and drove in two runs for the Rangers, who have won a season-high seven in a row.

Eddie Rosario homered and drove in four runs, while Logan Morrison also homered and Mitch Garver had three hits for the Twins, who have lost three straight.

Gallardo (1-0) entered with a 15.95 ERA and made his second start for Texas after opening the year with Cincinnati. He fell behind 2-0 just five pitches into the game on Rosario's homer before turning it around and pitching into the sixth. Gallardo gave up four earned runs on six hits. Keone Kela gave up a two-run double to Rosario, but struck out Morrison with the bases loaded to end the game, earning his 18th save.

Twins starter Jake Odorizzi (3-5) retired the side in order in the first inning, but the Rangers knocked him out in a six-run second.

    DODGERS 8, METS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Clayton Kershaw and Jacob deGrom stumbled in an unexpected ace showdown, Matt Kemp hit a pinch grand slam during a five-run eighth and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the slumping Mets.

The Dodgers have won 11 straight against the Mets dating to May 2016, matching their best run in the rivalry. Los Angeles beat New York 11 straight times across 1963 and `64.

Kershaw gave up two runs over three innings in a surprise return from the disabled list. He threw 55 pitches, starting out strong before laboring through his final inning. Left-handed rookie Caleb Ferguson (1-1) replaced him and escaped a couple tight situations over four scoreless innings for his first major league win.

DeGrom (5-3) allowed three earned runs in six innings, including Max Muncy's 14th home run in the first. He entered the game with a major league-leading 1.51 ERA and hadn't allowed three earned runs in a game since April 16 against Washington. New York has lost five straight overall and 12 of 13 at home.

    ORIOLES 7, BRAVES 5

ATLANTA (AP) - Mark Trumbo hit a first-inning grand slam, Chris Davis doubled in three runs and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Braves.

Dylan Bundy (6-7) allowed two runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings while improving to 3-0 in June. One day after allowing four runs and recording only one out, Zach Britton pitched around a one-out walk to Johan Camargo in the ninth to earn his first save.

AL East-leading Atlanta dropped its third consecutive game. Julio Teheran (5-5) allowed a season-high seven runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Trumbo's homer was his fourth in his last six games. He has seven homers this season after missing April with a right quad strain.

Nick Markakis, who spent his first nine seasons with Baltimore, drove in three runs for Atlanta, including a two-run double off Donnie Hart in the seventh.

    CARDINALS 3, BREWERS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Yadier Molina homered twice to back a strong start by Miles Mikolas and lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a victory.

Molina's two-run homer in the sixth inning off reliever Jeremy Jeffress gave St. Louis the lead and the Cardinals held on behind the pitching of Mikolas and four relievers. Marcell Ozuna led off the sixth with a line-drive single to center and scored on Molina's shot to right-center, a ball that bounced off the top of the wall and into the St. Louis bullpen.

Mikolas (8-2) allowed three hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings while walking two and striking out five. Bud Norris earned his 14th save with a scoreless ninth. Jeffress (5-1) took the loss.

    INDIANS 4, TIGERS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Trevor Bauer struck out 11 over 6 1/3 innings to beat Detroit for the fourth time this season, leading the Indians past the Tigers for their sixth straight win overall.

Bauer (7-5) allowed a run in the second inning on a wild pitch and was pulled after Dixon Machado's one-out single in the seventh. He's 4-0 with a 1.23 ERA in four starts against the Tigers.

Francisco Lindor hit a leadoff homer in the fifth, and Jose Ramirez - who reached base in his 30th consecutive game - and Edwin Encarnacion had RBI singles in a three-run first.

Cody Allen struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 16th save in 17 opportunities.

Francisco Liriano (3-3), making his first start in a month, allowed three runs - two earned - in four innings.

    ATHLETICS 7, WHITE SOX 6

CHICAGO (AP) - Pinch-hitter Nick Martini drove in the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning with his first major league hit and the Oakland Athletics came back from an early five-run deficit to edge the White Sox.

Martini, recalled from Triple-A before the game, lined a full-count single off Juan Minaya (0-2) with two outs to center to score Stephen Piscotty from second. Piscotty reached on a double when right fielder Avisail Garcia lost his routine fly in the sun.

Piscotty launched a two-run drive and Matt Olson hit a solo shot as the Athletics homered in their 24th consecutive road game, tying a modern day record set by Baltimore in 1996. Lou Trivino (5-1), the A's fourth reliever, pitched 1 2/3 innings and struck out four. Blake Treinen got the last five outs for his 17th save as Oakland hung on for its sixth victory in seven games despite committing two errors in the ninth.

Tim Anderson hit a three-run homer that capped Chicago's five-run first-inning burst. The White Sox have lost nine of 10.

Both starters exited early with injuries. Oakland's Daniel Mengden left with a sprained right foot after two innings, while Chicago's Dylan Covey was pulled due to right hip soreness with no outs in the fifth.

    MARLINS 6, ROCKIES 2

DENVER (AP) - J.T. Realmuto hit his second career grand slam during a five-run seventh and the Miami Marlins beat Colorado to stop a three-game skid and end the Rockies' winning streak at four.

Derek Dietrich also homered, and Trevor Richards (2-4) gave up one run and three hits in six innings, striking out eight. Richards also singled for his first hit in the majors.

Rockies starter Tyler Anderson (4-3) was sharp before allowing three consecutive hits to open the seventh, including an RBI single from pinch-hitter Justin Bour that chased the lefty and put the Marlins ahead 2-1. Starlin Castro then loaded the bases after video review reversed an out call and ruled him safe with an infield single. An out later, Realmuto fouled off three pitches against struggling reliever Bryan Shaw before lining a shot over the right-field wall.

Gerardo Parra hit a solo homer in the seventh and drove both runs for the Rockies, who fell back below .500 (38-39).

    DIAMONDBACKS 7, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Zack Greinke pitched six scoreless innings, staying in through two rain delays, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Pirates for their third consecutive win.

Paul Goldschmidt homered for NL West-leading Arizona, and David Peralta drove in two runs. Goldschmidt also walked twice and scored three times. Greinke (7-5) allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked none. He also doubled and scored on Jon Jay's double in the fourth. The Pirates hit just four balls out of the infield against Greinke.

Arizona grabbed control with five runs in the first four innings against Joe Musgrove (2-3).

    PHILLIES 5, NATIONALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Maikel Franco went 4 for 4, Carlos Santana homered and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Nationals.

With the Phillies leading 3-2 in the eighth, Santana sent a drive into the Philadelphia bullpen in left-center field off Kelvin Herrera for his 13th homer of the season and second in two games. Franco later added an RBI single for the Phillies, who have won five of six.

Odubel Herrera, who had homered in five straight games, went 0 for 4.

Anthony Rendon homered for Washington, which has lost three of four.

Aaron Nola (9-2) stiffened after a shaky first inning, giving up two runs on four hits over six. Seranthony Dominguez worked the ninth for his fourth save.

Erick Fedde (0-3) allowed three runs on eight hits in six-plus innings.

    GIANTS 5, PADRES 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Slumping Brandon Crawford doubled twice, tripled and drove in three runs, leading the Giants over the San Diego Padres.

Brandon Belt singled twice and Gorkys Hernandez added an RBI double as the Giants won their fifth in seven games.

Crawford went into the game mired in an 0-for-18 funk. He walked in the second, hit a triple off Matt Strahm in the fourth and doubled in a pair of runs off Adam Cimber (3-4) in the sixth. Crawford also doubled and scored in the eighth. San Francisco's Gold Glove-winning shortstop also helped turn three of the Giants' four double plays. He made a throwing error in the ninth that allowed a run to score.

Reyes Moronta (3-1) retired three batters for the win.

Hunter Renfroe homered for San Diego, which has dropped six of seven.

    ASTROS 4, ROYALS 3, 12 INNINGS

HOUSTON (AP) - Carlos Correa hit a game-ending RBI single in the 12th, lifting the Astros over the Kansas City Royals.

George Springer led off the 12th with a walk, and Alex Bregman followed with a bloop single into shallow right field that fell between three players. An error by Ryan Goins allowed Springer to advance to third. After reigning AL MVP Jose Altuve was walked intentionally, Correa singled into right-center gap against Justin Grimm (1-3).

Collin McHugh (3-0) pitched a perfect inning for the win.

    BLUE JAYS 4, ANGELS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Steve Pearce hit a three-run homer in the ninth and the Toronto Blue Jays ended a five-game road losing streak.

Pearce's fourth homer was a line drive down the left-field line off Justin Anderson (1-2), who gave up a two-out single to Aledmys Diaz and walked Devon Travis to bring Pearce to the plate.

Seunghwan Oh (3-2) got the win despite giving up a solo home run to Luis Valbuena that tied it at 1 in the eighth. Ryan Tepera earned his sixth save, striking out Jose Fernandez to end the game.

Marcus Stroman threw five scoreless innings for the Blue Jays, who had lost 10 of their last 11 on the road. Stroman had not started since May 8 because of shoulder fatigue. Teoscar Hernandez gave the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead on his solo home run in the third.
