Stanton homers twice in debut, Yankees beat Blue Jays 6-1
March 29, 2018

TORONTO (AP) Giancarlo Stanton homered twice, doubled and had four RBIs in his New York Yankees debut, a 6-1 win Thursday over the Toronto Blue Jays that gave Aaron Boone in a win in his first game as a professional manager.

Luis Severino (1-0) pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings for the Yankees, who won their opener for the first time since 2011.

Acquired from Miami after leading the majors with 59 homers, Stanton hit a two-run homer in the first off J.A. Happ (0-1), an RBI double in the fifth and hit a solo homer in the ninth off Tyler Clippard.

WHITE SOX 14, ROYALS 7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Matt Davidson became the fourth player in major league history to homer three times on opening day, Tim Anderson homered twice and Jose Abreu went deep for the White Sox.

James Shields (1-0) surrendered four runs in the first inning but wound up lasting six innings, holding his former team without a hit after that shaky first.

Davidson became the fourth player with a three-homer performance on opening day, joining Detroit's Dmitri Young (2005), the Cubs' Tuffy Rhodes (1994) and Toronto's George Bell (1988). Chicago's matched the record for home runs on opening day, set by the New York Mets in 1988.

Danny Duffy (0-1) was followed by eight relievers.

CUBS 8, MARLINS 4

MIAMI (AP) - Ian Happ became the second player to homer on the first pitch of the major league season, and Anthony Rizzo made his emotional homecoming even more memorable with a home run.

Rizzo homered into the upper deck in the second inning - an unscripted tribute to the victims of last month's shooting at his former high school in Parkland, Florida. As he crossed home plate, Rizzo patted his chest and pointed to the sky.

Happ pulled the first pitch from Jose Urena (0-1) into the seats. Dwight Evans is the only other player to connect on the first pitch of a season, doing it for the Red Sox in 1986 off Jack Morris at Tiger Stadium, the Elias Sports Bureau said.

Steve Cishek (1-0) stranded four runners in two scoreless innings.

ATHLETICS 6, ANGELS 5, 11 INNINGS

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Marcus Semien singled into an empty center field with one out in the 11th inning, beating Los Angeles' five-man infield.

Shohei Ohtani connected on the first pitch he saw for a single in a much-hyped major league debut for the Japanese two-way star. Batting eighth as designated hitter, Ohtani swung at the first pitch and grounded a hard single to right field off Kendall Graveman in the second inning. He grounded out his next three times up before a strikeout in the 11th.

Boog Powell hit a one-out triple off Noe Ramirez (0-1) to start the winning rally. Matt Joyce was intentionally walked to bring up Semien, who delivered his first career game-ending RBI.

Chris Hatcher (1-0) got the win.

MARINERS 2, INDIANS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Felix Hernandez pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning and Nelson Cruz hit a two-run home run in the first inning.

Hernandez became just the seventh pitcher to start at least 10 straight opening days, and he got off to a strong start against one of the best teams in the American League. Hernandez allowed two hits in 5 1/3 innings, only being pulled due to a limited pitch count after being hit by a line drive during spring training and missing some time.

Hernandez (1-0) was given an early jolt from Cruz, who picked up where 2017 left off. After hitting 39 home runs last year, Cruz hit the first pitch he saw from Corey Kluber (0-1) over the center field fence for an early 2-0 lead. The 88 mph cutter stayed in the middle of the plate, and Cruz didn't miss.

Kluber pitched eight innings and allowed six hits.

GIANTS 1, DODGERS 0

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Joe Panik homered off Clayton Kershaw in the fifth inning, and San Francisco dealt the three-time NL Cy Young Award winner his first loss in his franchise-record eighth consecutive opening day start.

It was the first run allowed this year by Kershaw (0-1), including spring training. The seven hits given up by the left-hander are the most off him on opening day, when he is 5-1.

Andrew McCutchen, acquired from Pittsburgh during the offseason, was 1 for 4 with a double in his Giants debut. Evan Longoria, obtained by San Francisco from Tampa Bay, was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts.

Ty Blach (1-0) pitched three-hit ball over five innings, and Hunter Strickland closed out the ninth for his first save.

ASTROS 4, RANGERS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - World Series MVP George Springer hit a leadoff homer in the opener for the second year in a row and Justin Verlander (1-0) pitched six scoreless innings as Houston started its championship defense.

Springer hit a 2-0 pitch off Cole Hamels (0-1), becoming the only player in MLB history with leadoff homers in consecutive season openers, according to Elias. Jake Marisnick also homered for the Astros.

Verlander is 6-0 with a 0.90 ERA in six regular-season starts since he was acquired from Detroit.

METS 9, CARDINALS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Yoenis Cespedes drove in three runs and newcomer Adrian Gonzalez hit a go-ahead double.

Noah Syndergaard (1-0) struck out 10 and walked none in six innings after missing most of last season with a torn lat muscle. Leadoff man Brandon Nimmo, subbing for injured All-Star Michael Conforto, reached safely four times and scored twice as the Mets chased a furious Carlos Martinez (0-1) in the fifth inning to make Mickey Callaway a winner in his first game as a manager.

RAYS 6, RED SOX 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Denard Span made a huge splash in his debut for his hometown team on opening day, lining a bases-loaded triple to highlight a six-run rally in the eighth that sent Alex Cora to a loss in his first game as a major league manager.

Span's triple was only Tampa Bay's third hit of the day and gave the Rays a 5-4 lead. Adeiny Hechavarria followed with an infield single off Carson Smith (0-1), providing a two-run cushion for closer Alex Colome to earn a save.

Chris Sale allowed one hit and struck out nine in six scoreless innings. Boston built a 4-0 lead against Chris Archer, with Eduardo Nunez hitting a two-run, inside-the-park homer

ORIOLES 3, TWINS 2, 11 INNINGS

BALTIMORE (AP) - Adam Jones homered on the first pitch from Fernando Rodney (0-1) starting the bottom of the 11th inning, and Baltimore won its eighth straight opener.

Richard Bleier (1-0) worked one inning for the Orioles, who made the most of five hits.

Minnesota has lost nine of its last 10 openers, including three against Baltimore.

BREWERS 2, PADRES 1, 12 INNINGS

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Orlando Arcia singled in Ji-Man Choi with two outs in the 12th off Adam Cimber (0-1), who was making his big league debut.

Jeremy Jeffress (1-0) pitched two innings for the win. Jacob Barnes struck out the side in the 12th for the save.

Eric Hosmer, signed to a $144 million, eight-year contract early in spring training, went 0 for 4 with a walk and two strikeouts in his Padres debut.

BRAVES 8, PHILLIES 5

ATLANTA (AP) - Nick Markakis hit a three-run homer off Hector Neris (0-1) with two outs in the ninth inning, capping a comeback from a 5-0 deficit as Philadelphia lost in Gabe Kapler's first game as a big league manager.

Freddie Freeman and Ozzie Albies also homered for Atlanta, which won with a walk-off hit on opening day for the first time since 1998.

Arodys Vizcaino (1-0) struck out the side in the ninth.

Friday’s 6-pack

Opening Day attendance figures:
— Cubs @ Marlins: 32,151 (mostly Cub fans)
— Cardinals @ Mets: 44,189, including Phil/Evan Pivnick
— Twins @ Orioles: 45,469
— Astros @ Rangers: 47,253
— Red Sox @ Rays: 31,042
— Angels @ A’s: 27,764. Hey the A’s are tied for first place. This was their first daytime home opener since 1994.

Quotes of the Day
“It was a great feeling getting out there, didn’t really feel like I missed any time with that injury last year. It was great to go out there and feel the energy that the 7 Line brings and the Mets fans bring. Just propels me to do a better job.”
Noah Syndergaard

“That had a nice ring to it, Don. I’m not going to lie about it.”
Trevor Hoffman, after Padres’ TV guy Don Orsillo introduced him on air Thursday, as “Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman”

Friday’s quiz
Who was manager of the Dodgers before Dave Roberts?

Thursday’s quiz
Last time the New York Knicks made the playoffs was in 2013.

Wednesday’s quiz
Florida (2008) was the last college basketball team to repeat as national champs.

****************************

Friday’s List of 13: Wrapping up Opening Day and other stuff
13) I used to be a minor league official scorer, long time ago (back when I had hair); if I kept score of games today, I’d code the field 3-9 instead of players, to account for shifting in the field.

For instance, Houston used four OF’s vs Joey Gallo Thursday; he flied out to 3B Alex Bregman, who was playing in left field. Traditional scoring would say F5, since Bregman plays 3B, but I’d say F7, since Gallo hit the ball to left field.

I’d supplement my scorebook with written notes on who actually caught the ball, but thats how I’d score a game now. Just think it would be more accurate.

12) Rays 6, Red Sox 4— Chris Sale allowed no runs, one hit in six IP (92 PT), then the Boston bullpen blew the lead in the 8th inning, allowing four walks, two hits, with Denard Span’s 3-run triple the big hit.

11) Dodger TV guy Joe Davis said there were 90 mound visits (90!!!) in Game 7 of the World Series last year. the limit this year will be six per team; ummm, thats a little different.

10) Cubs 8, Marlins 4- Roof was open at Marlins’ Park Thursday; it was open for six home games out of 78 LY and Miami was 0-6 in those games. Marlins are not a MLB-quality team right now- they’re going to lose a lot of games.

For the record, Ian Happ was the first batter this season and he hit a home run.

9) If you care about such things, Josh Donaldson led MLB last year, 15 1st-inning homers. Giancarlo Stanton was next, with 14. Stanton hit one in the first inning in Toronto Thursday, and then he hit another one in the 9th inning.

8) Astros 4, Rangers 1— When Joey Gallo batted with bases empty, Houston played four guys in OF with no fielders on left side of the infield. Actually, Altuve was in the OF too, in short RF, so they had five guys in the outfield.

7) McDonald’s All-American Darius Bazley decommitted from Syracuse, becoming the first top high school prospect to choose turning pro in the G League, where he’ll make $26,000, instead of spending a few months in college. Maybe he’ll get a small shoe contract.

Bazley is a 6-9 kid from the Cincinnati area; he’ll sign a pro contract when he turns 18 in June. Big gamble on his part— if he were to get hurt, then what? If he gets hurt in college, he’s still in college and has the school’s resources at his disposal. He won’t be property of an NBA team next year, just the G-League team. He’ll be eligible for the 2019 NBA Draft.

6) White Sox 11, Royals 4— Matt Davidson hit three homers for Chicago; maybe I should’ve picked him up in my fantasy league, back when he was available. Whoops.

5) RIP Rusty Staub 73, who played 23 years in the big leagues, breaking in with the Houston Colt .45’s in 1963. Le Grand Orange, as he was known in Montreal, made six All-Star teams and had a career OB% of .362 with 292 career homers. He owned a popular restaurant in Manhattan for years after he retired from playing.

Think about how times have changed; in 1963, there was a baseball team named after a gun and an NBA team called the Baltimore Bullets.

4) Braves 8, Phillies 5— Phils led this game 5-2 in 8th, but Atlanta rallied, and Nick Markakis hit a walk-off homer to send Braves fans home happy.

Atlanta catcher Tyler Flowers is the first player this season to leave a game with an injury— he suffered an oblique injury in the second inning.

3) Orioles 3, Twins 2 (11)— Not 100% sure, but Zach Duke may very well be the first pitcher ever to strike out four batters in an inning on Opening Day- he struck out four Orioles in the 7th inning.

Adam Jones hit a walk-off homer in the 11th inning to send everyone home happy, after Orioles blew a 2-0 lead in the ninth inning.

2) Brewers 2, Padres 1 (12)— Bill Schroeder is a former big league catcher who is a really good analyst; Padres had two on, one out in the 7th inning Thursday with Milwaukee leading 1-0, and Schroeder says more than once (three times??) that reliever Josh Hader can get Austin Hedges out with a slider, almost like he is trying to use telepathy to get him to throw it.

Eventually, Hader throws the slider and strikes Hedges out.

1— Louisville QB Lamar Jackson threw 59 passes, took snaps under center in front of reps from all 32 NFL teams Thursday, but he wouldn’t run a 40-yard dash, because everyone knows he is fast enough to play QB and he ain’t interested in being a wide receiver. Good for him.

LEADING OFF: Scherzer starts for Nats, Stanton swings away
March 30, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

TRY AGAIN

Max Scherzer begins his bid for a third straight NL Cy Young Award when he starts for Washington at Great American Ball Park. Opening day in Cincinnati was pushed back a day because of rain - the forecast calls for a dry afternoon with temperatures around 50 at game time. Homer Bailey is set to start for the Reds. The game will mark the major league managerial debut of Nationals skipper Dave Martinez.

POWER SHOW

Yankees fans are rooting for Giancarlo Stanton to provide an encore after his power-packed debut for New York. Stanton, who led the majors with 59 homers last year and was the NL MVP, hit two home runs and doubled in the opener at Toronto. Blue Jays righty Aaron Sanchez draws the assignment of trying to shut down Stanton, Aaron Judge and the Yanks. He posted an AL-best 3.00 ERA in 2016, but made just eight starts last season because of persistent blister issues.

GOING IN GAME TWO

After making three straight opening day starts for the Astros, Dallas Keuchel was bumped from the opener by Justin Verlander this year. Instead, the bearded left-hander will start Game 2 for Houston against the Rangers. Keuchel told reporters ''he wasn't happy by any means'' when manager A.J. Hinch announced Verlander as his No. 1 starter, though he also conceded ''the guy deserves it.'' Verlander threw six shutout innings in a 4-1 win Thursday. Keuchel draws Texas right-hander Doug Fister, who signed a $4 million, one-year free agent deal in November.

IS PRICE RIGHT?

David Price makes his season debut against the Rays a day after Boston's bullpen blew a 4-0 lead in a 6-4 loss. The Red Sox left-hander endured a frustrating 2017 season, with injuries limiting him to 74 2/3 innings. Price looked sharp this spring, posting a 2.25 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 12 innings. He'll oppose hard-throwing lefty Blake Snell.

JOEY'S TIME

The Padres surprisingly announced hotshot prospect Joey Lucchesi would start in place of injured Dinelson Lamet, even though the left-hander has only pitched 60 1/3 innings at Double-A. The 24-year-old was a second-round pick in 2016 and went 11-7 with a 2.20 ERA between Class A and Double-A last season. Perhaps more importantly, he had a 1.54 ERA in four spring starts, making him a candidate for his debut when Lamet strained his right elbow Sunday.

B]Polanco's homer lifts Pirates past Tigers in kooky opener
March 30, 2018
[/B]

DETROIT (AP) Gregory Polanco hit a three-run homer in the 13th inning to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 13-10 victory over Detroit on Friday - about an hour after the Tigers spilled onto the field to celebrate what they thought was a game-winning hit of their own.

Nicholas Castellanos was initially called safe at home in the bottom of the 10th for the Tigers, but a replay review took the run away and the teams played on. Polanco's drive to right-center on a 3-0 pitch from Alex Wilson (0-1) finally gave the Pirates a comfortable lead - or as comfortable as could be on a wacky day in which both teams scored four runs in the ninth.

Detroit put two men on base in the 13th, but Steven Brault (1-0) was able to hold on and finish his third scoreless inning of relief.

By the time the 5-hour, 27-minute game was over, there were only three umpires and one manager left. Plate umpire Mike Everitt exited in the eighth with a concussion after being hit in the mask by a pitch. And Ron Gardenhire - in his first game as Tigers manager - was ejected after the overturned call in the 10th.

MARLINS 2, CUBS 1, 17 INNINGS

MIAMI (AP) - Miguel Rojas drove in Brian Anderson with a single to center in the 17th inning, and Miami topped Chicago.

It was the second career game-ending RBI for Rojas, who did it once last year with a sacrifice fly. This one will go into Marlins lore, not only for its 5-hour, 18-minute length - but moreso because it's the first win of Derek Jeter's era as Miami's CEO.

It took a two-out rally to get it done. Anderson singled to left, and Cameron Maybin followed with a base hit that bounced off shortstop Javier Baez's glove and chased Eddie Butler (0-1) after seven innings and 90 pitches of relief.

Brandon Morrow came in to face Rojas, and two pitches later it was over.

Odrisamer Despaigne (1-0) was supposed to pitch for the Marlins on Saturday as their starter in the third game of the series, not at 12:14 a.m. as Miami's seventh reliever. But he worked a perfect 17th, capping a night where the Marlins' bullpen (and technically one member of their rotation) allowed four hits and struck out 12 in 11 2/3 scoreless innings.

GIANTS 1, DODGERS 0

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Joe Panik homered for the second straight game off closer Kenley Jansen, and San Francisco Giants beat error-prone Los Angeles.

The Giants won by an identical score in Thursday's season opener on Panik's solo shot off Clayton Kershaw.

This time, Panik went deep to the right field pavilion leading off the ninth against Jansen (0-1), making Giants skipper Bruce Bochy the first visiting manager ever to amass 100 wins at Dodger Stadium.

San Francisco's Johnny Cueto retired the first 18 batters he faced before Chris Taylor singled to lead off the seventh.

Tony Watson (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth.

Hunter Strickland, filling in for injured closer Mark Melancon, earned his second save.

RED SOX 1, RAYS 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - David Price was solid in his return to the Red Sox rotation, allowing four singles over seven scoreless innings of Boston's 1-0 victory over Tampa Bay.

The five-time All-Star, slowed by injury much of 2017, struck out five and walked none in his first start for the defending AL East champions since last July, when he went on the disabled list with left elbow inflammation.

Rafael Devers snapped a scoreless tie with a single up the middle that drove in Xander Bogaerts, who doubled off Chaz Roe (0-1) leading off the seventh inning to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.

Matt Barnes pitched a scoreless eighth for the Red Sox, who won for the first time under manager Alex Cora. Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth to finish the combined four-hitter.

NATIONALS 2, REDS 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Max Scherzer struck out 10 in six innings and Washington, in its first game with Dave Martinez as a major league manager, beat Cincinnati to begin defense of its NL East title.

Nationals star Bryce Harper got two hits, but his string of five straight opening days with a home run came to an end.

A day after this opener at Great American Ball Park was postponed because of rain, Scherzer (1-0) picked up where he left off. The winner of the last two NL Cy Young Awards gave up five hits, walked one and permitted just one runner past first base.

Brandon Kintzler and Ryan Madson each turned in an scoreless inning before Sean Doolittle pitched the ninth for the save.

Homer Bailey (0-1), making his first opening day start in his 10th season with the Reds, allowed four hits and one run with three walks and three strikeouts in six innings.

YANKEES 4, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Masahiro Tanaka pitched six sharp innings and New York beat Toronto without any pop from its sluggers.

Giancarlo Stanton, who homered twice and doubled a day earlier in the opener, went 0 for 4. So did big hitters Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez. Yet the Yankees, under new manager Aaron Boone, improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2011.

Tanaka (1-0) allowed one run on three hits in six innings, striking out eight without a walk. He retired his final 13 batters and is now 10-4 with a 2.86 ERA in 16 career starts against the Blue Jays.

Tommy Kahnle got four outs, David Robertson retired two batters and Aroldis Chapman pitched around Yangervis Solarte's two-out RBI double to earn his first save.

Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez (0-1) allowed four runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

PHILLIES 5, BRAVES 4, 11 INNINGS

ATLANTA (AP) - Carlos Santana drove in J.P. Crawford with a sacrifice fly in the 11th inning, and first-year Philadelphia manager Gabe Kapler went through nine pitchers for his first win as the Phillies beat Atlanta.

Crawford hit a one-out single up the middle off Shane Carle (0-1) and moved to third on a single by Cesar Hernandez, who had two hits and two walks. Santana, who hit his first homer with the Phillies in the fifth, drove in Crawford with a fly ball to left field.

Drew Hutchinson (1-0) closed it out when he got Ender Inciarte to hit a shallow fly ball to center field with runners on first and second.

Kapler, who was criticized for pulling Aaron Nola with a 5-0 lead after Nola threw only 68 pitches in the Braves' 8-5 win on Thursday night, used eight relievers after Nick Pivetta lasted only four innings.

RANGERS 5, ASTROS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Doug Fister mostly silenced the powerful Houston lineup for five innings in his Texas debut, Nomar Mazara homered for an early lead and the Rangers beat the Astros.

The right-hander who pitched for the Astros in 2016, the year before they won their first World Series, allowed only Max Stassi's RBI double in the fifth in his new home ballpark, where he had an 8.73 ERA coming in.

Four relievers held the Astros to one hit over the final four innings, capped by Keone Kela pitching around a walk in the ninth.

Robinson Chirinos and Rougned Odor hit back-to-back sacrifice flies for a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning against 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel (0-1). Keuchel allowed seven hits and three runs in six innings for the defending champs.

Fister (1-0) allowed four hits, struck out three and walked three.

“That’s what’s made him great: the attention to detail and the organization and never being satisfied. Unless you’re organized, you’re going to forget something. And that’s the thing that’s going to come back and beat you by one point.”
Penn State assistant football coach Ricky Rahne, talking about his old boss, Kansas State coach Bill Snyder

*******************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

13) Aaron Calixte scored 17 ppg for a Maine basketball team that went 6-26, playing in a weak America East Conference, the #25 Division I conference (out of 32) in America.

Joe Cremo scored 18 ppg, David Nichols 14.5 ppg for an Albany team that went 22-10, but only 10-6 in America East- they lost in first round of AE tourney two of last three years, but the Great Danes have made the tournament five times since 2006.

All three of these players have bolted their schools before their senior years, looking for greener pastures. Maine fired their coach after the season; Calixte has been pursued by big-name schools such as Florida State.

Albany has had four players transfer in the last week; something is amiss. Great Danes have won 133 games the last six years; when four players bolt a winning program at the same time, there is stuff going on that the general public can’t see.

12) I’m an Albany graduate (yes, I graduated from college!!!); I put myself thru school as student manager of the basketball team, but we were D-3 back then. Very good team, but D-3 is worlds apart from D-1. To see the Great Danes become a successful team at the D-1 level has been fun- coach Will Brown is a good guy who has built a consistent, winning program, but this isn’t good.

When your two best returning players jump ship at the same time, its not a good sign.

11) 29% of major leaguers on Opening Day (254 players) weren’t born in this country.

10) A 36-year old accountant who hadn’t played in anything but beer league hockey games in over a decade played the last 14:01 for the Blackhawks Thursday, after both Chicago goalies got hurt in the game, a 7-2 win over Winnipeg. Scott Foster stopped all seven shots he faced.

9) Oakland Raiders released P Marquette King, the 4th-highest paid punter in the NFL.

8) Temple basketball coach Fran Dunphy will step aside after next season and be succeeded by current assistant Aaron McKie, who played for the Owls.

7) Guy who owns a casino in Las Vegas has a $25,000 bet on Michigan to win the national title, which nets him $1,000,000 if the Wolverines win the championship. Derek Stevens owns the D Casino in Las Vegas and is a Michigan alum— he made the bet at the Golden Nugget.

Funny thing though, I know a guy who is a very knowledgeable sports bettor and Golden Nugget won’t let him bet more than $1,000 on a game. Go figure.

6) Makes no sense to me that Ron Gardenhire is a major league manager and Joe Girardi isn’t.

5) Cincinnati International Airport is actually located in Kentucky.

4) Rusty Staub is the only major leaguer who got 500+ hits for four different teams.

3) Houston Astros have used four outfielders on defense this spring, when lefty hitters Jay Bruce, Logan Morrison and Justin Bour were batting. This defense leaves the entire left side of the infield open- it apparently will only be used when the bases are empty.

2) Royals lost C Salvador Perez with a knee injury that he got while carrying luggage up stairs. He is expected to be out 6-8 weeks

1) ESPN reported how the Las Vegas Raiders opened negotiations with a guy who owns the 7,000-yard Bali Hai golf course in Las Vegas, so they can convert the golf course into stadium parking for the new domed stadium in the desert. That guy is Billy Walters, who is currently in federal prison on insider trading charges. Complicated.

LEADING OFF: Darvish debut with Cubs, bullpen bunch for Rays
March 31, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

DARVISH DEBUT

Yu Darvish makes his first start for the Chicago Cubs when he pitches at Miami. The last time threw in a game that counted, it didn't go well - he got tagged by Houston in a Game 7 loss in the World Series at Dodger Stadium, prompting speculation Darvish was tipping his pitches. The Japanese star and former Texas ace became a free agent and reached a $126 million, six-year contract with the Cubs just days before spring training began.

PITCHIN' IN

The Tampa Bay Rays are set to debut their so-called ''bullpen day.'' It's part of a non-traditional plan to use four-man rotation this season, with a combination of multiple-inning relievers taking the place of a starter every fifth day.

When probable pitchers for Tampa Bay's four-game, season-opening series against Boston were released, the Rays listed ''TBD'' for Game 3. That was even before the projected starter for Sunday's finale, Nathan Eovaldi, was put on the disabled list with an elbow problem that required arthroscopic surgery.

Rays manager Kevin Cash planned to wait until after Friday night's game to announce his bullpen-day scenario, wanting to see who was available.

ZACK'S TURN

Arizona ace Zack Greinke makes his season debut when he faces Colorado at home. He was slowed by a groin strain in spring training, but closed out his Cactus League action by pitching six shutout innings vs. Cleveland this week. The 34-year-old Greinke is beginning his 15th season in the majors. He was 17-7 with a 3.20 ERA last year, but then got hit hard by the Rockies in the NL wild-card game the Diamondbacks eventually won 11-8.

WHERE'D THEY GO?

The Reds flipped the bullpen configuration at Great American Ball Park for this season, moving their relievers from left-center field to right. When Cincinnati manager Bryan Price made a pitching change in the eighth inning of Friday's opener, he accidentally pointed to the Washington bullpen that's now in left-center.

STICKING AROUND

Ron Gardenhire hadn't managed since 2014, when his long run with the Twins ended. In his first game as Detroit's skipper, he didn't make it to the end, either. Gardenhire was ejected when a replay reversal in the 10th inning took away the apparent winning run, and Pittsburgh prevailed 13-10 in the 13th. Gardenhire will try again to go the distance when the Tigers take on the Pirates at Comerica Park.
