to obscure my dedicated IP address?

You'll probably have no problems with that.... But just to let you know a couple of years ago, I also used the same type of thing... Then one day, I got an email from my internet provider, that they had detected a problem with my computer and to run a fixit or some type of program.... If it was not fixed they would suspend my service.... When I tell you that I did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong to anyone via any type of communication, it was only as you stated to hide my IP. Your internet provider knows or will know at some point.... It was simply no big deal to me so I stopped the service..

Just passing this on....

These days it makes perfect sense and is a good idea to use a VPN at all times on the net (or TOR). What DPB is referring to above is probably a phishing attack that had nothing to do with his use of a vpn. If you EVER find yourself being solicited to install or download software by a non verifialbe source it's always a good and FRESH idea to delete such software before your system gets infected

I don't believe this to me true

I've seen where people might use them at Work to by pass blocking of sites or not wanting their bosses to see someone's search history
but the only ones doing it at home are the ones that are streaming content illegally

as far as here at The RX, they are using to hide their true ip's as maybe they were banned at some point or just so they can have multiple accounts

the funny ones are using VPN that show ip's from overseas like Poland, NZ or some Asian Countries ... but talk about all American sports

No, I actually called the cable company about the email. Got a representative on the phone and he told me something wasn't right. He did NOT mention what it was and I have no way of knowing what exactly. The type I was using always logged you in from a different city.. The internet service provider may have been affected in some fashion. I was told that I had 30 days to fix or they could send a tech rep to look at my computer. You do NOTHING online that SOMEBODY does not know about.

I'm only here to say what happened to me...I guess I'd had the thing about 4 or 5 months, when the email came from Cox! It was probably something buried deep in my use of their service as I did absolutely nothing wrong..No gaming or stealing anything or watching something that I had not paid for... I think it possibly my worry about a dating website....don't recall.

Its very unlikely the email came from Cox. Chances are the fake number on the fake email was to the scammers themselves. If you EVER get contacted by these phishing sites be really careful, stay FRESH and aware of who youre dealing with
