We are going to Cuba on a cruise in June. Im aware that you need a Visa as an American to go there and that it has to meet one of 12 different conditions to qualify. However, the cruise line leads you to believe that you have to do one of their shore excursions to qualify and I know that isn't the case. So my question is, how do you go about getting off the cruise ship and meeting one of the qualifications that meet the visa?

No one checks.

I kind of thought that would be the case but wasn't sure. So basically when i go to fill out my visa just pick something like support for the cuban people, and as long as its filled out they will let you off the boat then you can just go do whatever you want?

Has trump even mentioned Cuba? Seemed like we were close to travel and commerce but have made no progress the past year and a half

The paperwork varies depending on the cruise line. Holland America just has you sign an affidavit prior to boarding the cruise saying which category you plan on using...

What a beautiful place until the communists fucked it up. No reason to go there under Castros reign. Underage hookers and poverty and the poor people get nothing from the tourism.

From what I gather Trump did roll back some of Obama's shit that does make it slightly harder to go now. Apparently it used to be easier to just walk around by yourself but now you're supposed to actually have something set up with a company of some sort. But I was kind of figuring that nobody really checks shit like that so i'd imagine it's basically the same as it was.

From what I understand Royal Caribbean will handle the paperwork for you, you just have to fill it out. I just wasn't sure if i choose a category like, support for the cuban people, what, if anything i'd actually have to provide to "prove" thats what we are doing.

I've read in the cruise forums that (some) people get off the cruise ship in Cuba and don't do an excursion from the ship, and just do their own thing, and no one
ever checks... Not sure I'd risk it - but some people are doing it.

I was just there a few months ago. Flew in from CostaRica for a 3 day trip. No visa, no paperwork, they didn't even stamp my US passport. I actually wanted them to. They want US tourists and the money. Hung out in Old Havana, very cool there. Cheap, goodrestaurants and a bunch of bars and clubs to go to. Very safe, you can walk around the city at 2am and nobody will mess with you. Nice people, nice place, lots of old US cars are all over. Lots of women too. Have a great time.

Cuba 1 time
Mexico 4 times
Dominican 6 times

They are all pretty safe if you don't put yourself in bad situations.

I hope one day while I’m still alive Cuba has another revolution and implements a capitalized society. It’ll never happen but one can dream.
