Depends on the type of fish you're going after. For a beginner a closed face reel would be the easiest to use.

Some of the best smallmouth/largemouth fishermen I know can fish all day and not catch a fish, yet they will be
up at 5 am the next day ready to go again. There are days that fish just don't bite...lots of reasons for that.

I go to lake Wilderness here in WA. All you need is power bait and a friend to take the fish off the hook. Oh wait that's me. They are to slimy and wiggly for me to take off the hook.

As a kid in north Alabama I grew up on the Tennessee river and night fishing for catfish. We
would burn a tire or two all night while we camped out and fished. Always caught enough to
feed our family and others my Dad wanted to invite. He would always clean them and cook
them, and mostly invited our best family friends for a cookout.

The strange kicker is my Dad didn't like to fish. Lordy could he clean and cook. Best hushpuppys
in North Alabama. Fun memories of the past!

Same here just sit on the bank with a few beers and enjoy the silence waiting for a hit
