New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has created the impression this offseason that he is strongly considering retirement, but it is starting to look more and more like his indecisiveness has everything to do with his contract situation.

Gronkowski is not expected to show up when the Patriots officially begin their offseason program on Monday. While it’s possible he is still deciding if he wants to play in 2018, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reports that Gronkowski’s refusal to commit is “about the money.” As Howe notes, Gronk already wanted a new contract before he revealed that he was contemplating retirement at the conclusion of Super Bowl LII. If he no longer wanted to play football, he probably would have decided that by now.

For what it’s worth, ESPN’s Mike Reiss wrote on Monday that he believes Gronk’s absence from Day 1 of the offseason program is a “peaceful statement” that he wants more money, as the All-Pro tight end would be forfeiting a $250,000 bonus if he doesn’t attend 90 percent of the sessions.

Gronkowski’s base salary for 2018 is $8 million. That places him among the top-paid tight ends in the NFL, but it is $2 million less than the average Jimmy Graham is getting with the three-year, $30 million deal he signed with the Green Bay Packers. Plus, Gronk makes a bigger impact in the passing game than most of the league’s top receivers, and you have guys like TY Hilton and Doug Baldwin making $13 million and $11.5 million per year, respectively.

Last year, Gronk restructured his contract so that he had more than $5 million in incentives built in for 2017. He ended up earning all of them and making nearly $11 million, but he probably feels he should not have to deal with escalators in his contract going forward.

Gronkowski missed just one game due to injury last season, and he is said to be having some issues with Bill Belichick over training. All of that might factor into why he has not committed to playing in 2018, but a fatter contract could change his mindset in a hurry.

He's always wanted to get paid more, this isn't the first time that's been the case but he's always hurt so he never has any leverage.

I think his leverage would be that the Pats are Not the same team when he is hurt and out

Guy could get hurt and milk it a little, then what ? Don't think you can say it doesn't happen in All sports
why not take an extra week or so, I'm still getting Paid... and now a less of a chance to get hurt again

I mean, they won the SB w/o him just 14 months ago.

Yeah he is the key cog behind Brady but what's he really gonna do? His leverage is limited because they can win without him at a pretty good clip.

Last year before the season they gave a raise based on incentives so maybe they would do that again but probably not going to pay him as much as the Julio Jones/Antonio Brown's of the world when he only plays 50% of the games.

And because of how injury prone he is, it's tough to get a team to pony up the compensation that it would take for NE to deal him.

Why are you saying 50% of the games ?? in 2013 & 2016 Yes, but he played 14 games last season and lead the team in receiving yards, and avg. 15.7 yards
and it's because of him that other receivers gets theirs as in some plays Gronk will be double teamed, leaving them open.

I'm sure they can adjust , but when he's on the field, the Pats are a better team

50% of the games was hyperbole, obviously he's out a lot though. And not getting any younger.

2011, 2012, 2013, 2016 he was either badly hurt/limited or didn't play in the playoffs.

Obviously they're way better with him, nobody is saying he isn't the most dominant force the world has ever seen but him being injury prone and NE being good w/o him is the main reason he has no leverage.

But couldn't you say He's one of the Main reasons They Got there ( playoffs/ SB ) ??

I'm not saying you are wrong, But I just think as a whole, they wouldn't be the same team.

and I still believe he should get a little more, $2-3 Mil more per year. Just My opinion

Yes, he's 1 of the best players in the league.

I'm just saying in terms of skill level/impact he should be paid like the best non-QB players in the league, and that will likely never happen because 1. He's never been in a position to take a strong stance in negotiation because he's always coming off major knee or back surgery and 2. It is very easy to franchise tag a tight end since the top 5 salary at tight end isn't particularly high. So despite transcending his position, it will be tough for him to get more than a raise similar to last year.
