Why the Tigers on Saturday at -110...The Tigers come into Saturdays game against the Royals after winning their last 4 of 7 where they averaged 5.3 RPG with a .291 BA/.324 OBP in that span. The Tigers should be smiling this morning knowing that they will be facing a LHP tonight. On the season, the Tigers are averaging 6 RPG with a .316 BA/.316 OBP against LHP. Another positive number with this Tigers offense is how they have fared during the day this season. In day games, the Tigers are 7-3 while averaging 5.4 RPG with a .255 BA/.327 OBP. Mikey Fiers will take the ball for Detroit who is coming off of a rough start at home against the Yankees where he allowed 5 runs through 5 innings on 8 hits, 2 HRs, 1 BB and 4 Ks. Even though the box score didn't reflect it, there were some positive saber digits to take away from that start. Fiers posted a BABIP against in that game of .300 against the above-average lineup of the Yankees. When looking at his previous start against the below-average White Sox on the road, Fiers posted a BABIP against of .214. With that being said, Fiers now gets to come home against a below-average offense in the Royals with a hot Tigers team playing behind him which should lead to more outs for Fiers. Another saber positive from that start was that Fiers posted a GB% of 64%. When looking at his 2017 numbers, his following starts were quality starts on average due to the fact that Fiers is a GB pitcher. Going back to 2017, Fiers also liked to pitch during the day...he saw his era drop from 5.96 at night through 96 innings compared to a 3.97 era during the day through 56 innings. The Royals come into Saturdays game after posting a 1-6 record over their last seven where they averaged just 3.4 RPG with a .252 BA/.315 OBP. Their numbers drop even lower during the day where they are 2-8 with a .230 BA/.271 OBP. Danny Duffy has pitched well over his last two starts but these starts came against the below-average Blue Jays and the Mariners at home. We are fading Duffy in this start due to the fact that he is coming off of back-to-back 100 pitch outings which did not fare well for him at the beginning of last year after his first b2b 100 pitch outings. In that road start against the White Sox, Duffy went just 4 innings where he allowed 6 runs on 9 hits and 2 BBs. When we match that with Duffys 2017 road era of 4.06 and his day time era of 4.60 where he allowed 9 HRs through 45 innings to go with his 1-5 record...we are playing a strong fade against him. This Tigers lineup has a combined 178 ABs off of Fiers with a .287 BA/.365 OBP and 4 HRs.
