The don’t get it.

Or maybe they do. Last year, we had a Secretary of Health and Human Services who chartered a jet to get from Washington, DC, to Philadelphia. For the rest of us, that is a train ride that doesn’t take much longer than standing in line for a flight at the airport, and costs about 99% less.

But, of course, the rules of common sense frugality don’t apply to an important Cabinet Secretary.

These really important people deserve chartered planes, $30,000 furnishings for a private dining room at HUD, and, in the case of the really important Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, a $43,000 phone booth in his office.

In reality, the dollars involved in these extravagances are truly negligible in the larger scheme of government spending and even waste. Yes, every dollar counts, but the problem is something much, much deeper.

Maybe it’s something in the water. Otherwise, it’s hard to fathom what would possess a “public servant” to spend more money than a great many Americans make in a year on...phone booths, dining sets, private aircraft and other trappings that have pretty much NOTHING to do with actually serving.

Frankly, it occurs to me that a Cabinet Secretary, agency administrator or politician who would engage in such ridiculous perks isn’t smart enough to have the job in the first place. If they are THAT isolated and removed from the challenges faced every day by the people they supposedly serve, perhaps they shouldn’t be there.

The Our America Initiative exists to advocate freedom, less government, and making government accountable for every penny of OUR money it spends. A $43,000 phone booth by itself may not be the difference between a balanced budget or a deficit, but the imperial mentality behind it is precisely why we have a $20 trillion debt.

What sense of decency would allow any of us to spend someone else’s money the way our politicians and their appointees do? And it IS someone else’s money -- OURS.

Unfortunately, too many Americans have become numb to the abuse. They roll their eyes and think, “There they go again.”

I can’t do that. I can’t sit by and watch the politicians spend us further into bankruptcy. That’s why I am the Honorary Chairman of Our America, and why I put so much value in the support and activism of friends like you.

Freedom, common sense government and Liberty must have a voice, and we are that voice.

No more $43,000 phone booths.
