ABC News reported that on Friday, April 20, a 2 year old was shot and killed when her mother accidentally dropped her gun at a hotel in the Cleveland area.
Police in Wickliffe, Ohio, said Saturday that it appears as though the mother of the child was handling the gun when she dropped it and it went off, hitting the girl. Police said the girl was struck in the chest and rushed to the hospital where she died.
According to News 5 Cleveland, the mother was at the hotel with her children to escape a domestic violence situation. The police’s initial investigation led Wickliffe Police Lt. Pat Hengst to say that he didn’t think that this woman was a criminal, or had done anything intentionally in this circumstance.
"But let's be realistic here. This mother has to live with the fact that through a moment of inattention, she took the life of a child," Lt. Hengst added. "And that’s something that, quite frankly, we’re concerned she’s not going to be able to recover from. What is a court system or a judge going to be able to do over and above having your child taken from you?"
There were three other children in the room at the time — a 16-year-old sister, a 5-year-old brother, and Laila's 2-year-old twin brother.
This is a terrible story and no one wins points in the battle for meaningful gun safety and gun control when children die. I cannot imagine the anguish this woman and her family is going through at this moment; and I hope we can find a place where we all work and create an environment where less of this anguish is visited upon families.
