Messaging with another poster earlier, but Airbnb is awesome.

I'll never stay in another hotel if i don't have too.

Usually get full kitchens, much more amenities and great locations, with NO resort fees or taxes. No brainer!

my buddy took a solo trip down to florida to be a beach bum and just get away. He rented a room in a house from a chick that was living there. I guess you can post photos of yourself and you can see ratings of the person renting and also the renter. He paid like $20-30 a night for his room, and ended up hooking up the chick a few times over the course of his stay.

my other buddy rented a room at some familys house, it was basically a couch with a partition put up in the living room while he was in town for a redsox game. It was around $50-60 a night as opposed to $250 for a hotel. My buddy is the dirty asshole friend and sent me messages about beating off on their couch behind the partition. so you win some and lose some lol

have used it before and will continue to do so. its awesome and you get a better experience of the local culture i think. id stay in a hotel for business travel but for personal i think airbnb is great. my sister has one in alaska, she is killing it and meets people from everywhere in the world. you can rate the guests as well so that if they wreck your place you can make it so others wont let them stay there. its a good system and i have enjoyed it.

This thread is easily 5+ years late. Not always the best choice in some cities...and not the best if prices are comparable to nearby hotels where you can earn points/credits.

That being said...we will be in Portland Maine in a few months...and Airbnb is the only way to go. Prices aren’t even close.

the pizza is quite good in Portland and the lobsters are cheap.

I went a couple of years ago...and didn't find ANY cheap lobsters. Wifey love lobster rolls...and those are setting a brother back over $20 a pop.

cheap is relative, maybe cheaper and fresher lobsters would of been more accurate.

Bad time to be eating lobster if price is a factor. The prices vary depending on availability. Right now the prices are sky high because of the cold, miserable spring we've had here.

Close your eyes, take a deep swallow and spend the money. The Maine lobsters are the sweetest and the best. The colder the water they come from the better. Eat the lobster boiled with drawn butter. Nothing better.

Have fun. Love Portland.

I'm a big beer guy...i'll be out hundreds between waterbury, vt-portland-and portsmouth.

If you are in Boston...Trillium and Treehouse (Charlton) are top 5 breweries in the nation.

Big fan of central provisions and eventide in portland.

Maine Lobsters are delicious indeed. By the way, there are cheap lobsters in South Korea and also in the Philippines.

Love the idea. Can't seem to do it.
i've never had a good experience but have only done it for football games in college towns where the owner is pricing their house at the same rate as a nice hotel for a football weekend. I'd rather have a clean shitter, someone vacuuming and making up my bed, and be in the center of it all than sit in someone else's filth on the outskirts of town.

used it in Tuscaloosa, Athens, and Decatur but will stick to slightly overpriced hotels. The little amount of money saved is eaten up by the uber/lyft receipts or parking charges for every mini-trip you make in that city.

I can totally see doing this for a 25-YO that only needs a pillow to put his head on but if you've got enough money to fly and purchase tix for a big event why not keep that money flowing into a nice place to stay that cleans up after you each day?
