The mother of Parkland shooting victim Scott Beigel is asking for some “compassion” from Talon Air Inc. after seeing the bill for the last-minute charter flight she booked in a desperate attempt to get to South Florida.

Linda Schulman heard about the tragic February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School, where her son worked as a geography teacher and cross-country coach, and immediately tried to get a flight down to Parkland.

"We took to our computers searching every airline that could get us to Florida from Islip, LaGuardia, JFK or Newark. Long story short, due to school having winter break and a major PGA golf tournament taking place in Florida, there were no available flights to be had," she wrote on Facebook.

Every airline she contacted told her there were no seats available for the urgent flight, so she booked a charter flight with Talon Air Inc.

"Even though I had never chartered a plane before, I knew it was going to be super expensive. It didn’t matter what the cost ~ I had to get to my son!" she wrote.

Soon after the flight, the grieving mother was hit with a crippling $36,458 bill for the flight down and then flying the empty plane back – a common practice for airline companies.

“I have no problem accepting that I have to pay for one way, even the fuel charge for the return flight,” Beigel’s mother wrote on Facebook. “Where is the compassion from Talon Air Inc.?”

Six weeks after Beigel was killed, Talon Air has responded and agreed to reimburse Schulman the cost of the one-way flight, $18,229.56, and donate the remaining $18,229 to the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund, which provides scholarships for children to attend summer camp.

“You have endured the greatest tragedy that no parent should have to confront,” company founder Adam Katz wrote in a letter to Schulman on Tuesday. “No parent should have to go through what you and so many other parents have endured.

My heart goes out to each and every one who has suffered so much pain, anguish, and loss by virtue of this senseless act of violence. ... I apologize for how poorly Talon initially handled this tragic matter.”

Schulman said she has accepted the offer from Katz.

You'l call me heartless, but I do not agree with this lady whatsoever! People are running for profit businesses, not charities! Love how she says the cost didn't matter and is now complaining about the cost.

how is this airline greedy? they have a product/service, they offer it at what they deem necessary to make a profit and run a business and she or you or any other consumer has the right to engage with them or not.

I would do everything possible to get there myself if in her shoes. But I find it hard to believe she couldn't get a regular Flight down there

I would think any of the Non Discount airlines would have had a few seats left

also like others said, She had no problem with paying at first, but complained after receiving the Bill.

I can see both arguments...However unless any of us have gotten a phone call that our child might have been killed can not say how or what we would do in that situation or what is right or wrong...Let me tell you "shock" is a real thing that affects you mentally and physically in the moment. I do think the boss made the right call taking care of the bill shows some people still have decency and do the right thing when given the chance. If anyone has the right to change their mind or realize they made a mistake it would be a mother who just lost her child.

they will get 10x the amount of publicity, good will out of this than the price of the trip. More companies should see the value in this and "do the right thing" because in the long run it will make them more money

I'm glad you said it first as I feel the same way but would most likely be called an "asshole" had I said it.

Nope, I am just saying we can not judge a persons actions in such a situation unless you have been there too...Have you been in that situation, getting the call your child may have been murdered while you were across the country? Its a simple yes or no question, no explanation needed.

Well sure, it's a fair point but how can you expect a charter airplane to fly across the country for free?

The mom said she didn't care about the cost but then she did care when she got the bill?

why didn't she just go to one of those smaller airfields and hire a pilot with his own prop plane to take her down there. it would have taken 2 hours longer at 10% of the cost.

huh? what does it matter if I have been in that situation or not? Can't judge a person's action? She used a company for a service, got the service, then thought she should not have to pay the full bill? I do not understand the way people think....the business is OWNED by people!!! If this business was started and failed was this Mom going to help pay for it? Makes ZERO sense. Reminds me of my own sister who not that long ago was saying of course companies should pay for leave when someone is pregnant, because "what are people supposed to do" I then explained to her a business is started by people with families with their own bills, why should they be responsible to pay your bills? Right away she said "oh I have never thought of it that way before"..mind boggling to me

the surprising part to me....you don't have to prepay for a trip like that?

unfortunately I went through something with my Niece last year and she lived out in California, she was on her death bed, I flew out there the last minute
Paid over $900 for the flight to get out that Night.
Her Parents had passed so i was the closest to her, she was like a Daughter to me.

The first 3 Airlines didn't have seats, so I went to a non discounted airline and paid the price to get there as fast as I could.
Never thought about a Charter because I know the price.

I'm not saying what this lady did wasn't the right or wrong choice. But if she knew it would cost a lot of money and was willing to pay it.
why then turn around and complain about it ?? or try to get a refund ....

Like Kidman said, huge Publicity for them to step up and do that. But what happens the next time ?
Does that mean if a parent goes through something the same, Call them and they will fly you Free ?
