What Alabama will reportedly pay Utah State to come to Tuscaloosa in 2022 is absolutely
ridiculous and insulting to the smaller schools in the state. According to Brett McMurphy,
the Crimson Tide will shell out a whopping $1,910,000 to play the Aggies at home. Per
McMurphy, that's the third highest total ever for a visiting team. Officially, the game has
not been announced yet by either school. What's disgusting to me and many other people
who live in the state is that Alabama will not schedule games with UAB, Troy, Jacksonville
State or South Alabama. Scheduling some of these smaller in-state schools would create
more interest than a Utah State and help our in-state programs. Sucks when you consider
Alabama schedules Mercer, Georgia State, Chattanooga, Charleston Southern, Western
Carolina and other boring matchups no one wants to see.

Throw Appalachian State into the mix as well; It will be a long time before football fans forget what the Mountaineers did to Michigan (In the Big House)
a few years back. Heck yes, give some of these smaller programs from the area a chance at fame and glory......and some extra spending money.

Mack, to emphasize my point...this year Alabama plays The Citadel. Hell, I wouldn't
go to that game with free tickets and free parking. Bama fans are tired of these blowout
    matchups against scrimmage teams.

UAB, yes I would go to the game. UAB is trying to build a new stadium and needs the money,,
plus the game would create tons of interest. Every seat would be filled in Bryant-Denny. I
guarantee you every seat won't be filled for Utah State.

Funny how UCF is told to “play real teams” as UCF is doing everything in their power to do so.

I agree w/ the sentiment of playing the smaller 1AA state schools. It keeps the money in state and allows the kids at those schools to - likely - fulfill a lifelong dream of playing Alabama in Alabama's stadium (or Auburn). The only thing I could see the school worrying about is the kids playing their asses off to "show they belong" or something and causing an injury to a starter.

Utah State is a D1 school, so maybe Alabama wanted a D1 school vs. 1AA (Jacksonville State). But UAB, Troy, and USA should be getting those games. Although, Troy is going to field a pretty good team this year.

Clover, I understand what you are saying. There are certainly a lot of people who support your position and feel like bama and Auburn need to support their fellow instate universities. But I'm going to play devil's advocate and take the other side of the equation.

Hats off to bama. They have nothing to gain and everything to lose by playing instate FBS programs.

Alabama has a population less than 5 million but support 5 FBS programs. Louisiana is the only other state with a comparable population that supports that many FBS programs. Florida's population is over 4 times that of Alabama and they only have 6 FBS programs. Ga's population is over double that of Alabama and they have 4 FBS programs. The list goes on and on.

Having so many FBS programs in state may not seem like a bad idea for bama (or AU) at this time, but eventually it will be. Just wait until bama start losing recruits to these schools and the fan base will be in an uproar. And don't think it can't or want happen. Reflect back to the late 70's when UAB started their basketball program. Auburn thought scheduling games against UAB in Birmingham would be a great way for them to showcase their product to the Birmingham kids. Instead it instantly gave UAB credibility and made recruiting the Birmingham area harder than ever.

Keep in mind, Troy, UAB and USA did not move up to the FBS level to win football games, they did it for the almighty dollar. Hell, Troy had to give tickets away just to qualify for FBS status. UAB can't even afford to build its own stadium. When these schools earn the right to be scheduled, then schedule them. Until then, keeping these bottom feeders afloat is not bama's responsibility- even though a large percentage of the population would enjoy the match-ups.

Nice read and appreciate your thoughts on the thread's subject.

My question to you is this: Is it Alabama's responsibility to keep the bottom feeders in Georgia,
Tennessee or the Carolinas or any other state afloat?

Playing middle tier ACC teams is not stepping up in talent.

    Absolutely not.

Also, I agree with your original post. Even though Utah State is Div 1, 1.9 million seems like a lot.

I dont see any P5 conferences inviting them to join or the good teams in those conferences scheduling them. Instead they'll schedule the Utah States of the world

    ooohhh scary

Yet you failed to mention 2013 where UCF beat Penn State, Louisville, and Baylor in the Fiesta bowl

I also never mentioned that teams were "scared" to play them

And if you want to look further, which P5 team did UCF beat in 2000??
