The New York Knicks are prepared to clear salary cap space this summer for a potential run at LeBron James in free agency, a source told the New York Post's Marc Berman.

The Knicks would likely be in a position to clear significant cap room as it is, but Berman reports the hiring of new head coach David Fizdale could be the impetus for any attempt at luring James to Gotham. The pair were close when Fizdale was an assistant on LeBron's Miami Heat teams.

Enes Kanter and Kyle O'Quinn can opt out of their contracts this summer, opening up a possible $23 million for the Knicks. While Joakim Noah's albatross contract still hangs over the franchise, the bigger question is whether there's enough talent in New York to supplement James, with Knicks franchise cornerstone Kristaps Porzingis expected to miss a good chunk of next season as he recovers from ACL surgery.

James has been periodically linked to the Knicks over the years, including during his free-agent summer of 2010, when he ultimately signed with the Heat.

Yeah not happening. The way I see it, Lebron is going to Houston, LAL or staying in CLEV but not a chance he goes to NY

I see these scenarios:

A. The Cavs get to the Finals, pull off a championship, and he stays in Clebeland

B. He goes to Houston or Golden State, based on which one DOESN'T win the title

That way he can go to the team the other knocked off, and play hero

Sixers +500
Warriors +1000

Sixers are interesting, but they still need a productive PG for the post season

The Knicks would have to bring in other players too, Lebron wants another championship

Could be local media BS, but the buzz was the Sixers weren’t interested in James and that he doesn’t really fit into their future plans. Supposedly, their main target is Leonard. They have the cash, players and picks to pull it off coupled with his relationship with Brown it would make sense. Boston and the Lakers were the other teams mentioned who have the firepower and cash to possibly land Kawhi.

I don't want Kawhi, usually it's both Brown AND Tatum that get mentioned, and I would hate that.

I want to keep both young studs, aged 20 and 21, but I'd be willing to part with one plus something else if Leonard is healthy and signs a long term contract. The C's own their young studs for another 4 and 5 years, and they're cheap.

I'm not sure I like what's going on with him in SA either
