Why the Pirates on Saturday at -126...The Pirates are hot, coming in off a win and as winners of their last five of seven games where they averaged 6.6 RPG with a .282 BA/.343 OBP in that span. The Buccos send Chad Kuhl to the hill who is coming off a strong performance against the Brewers on the road, where he threw 7 shutout innings on 1 hit, 2 BBs and 8 Ks. The sabers from that game are also trending high with a 15.6 LD% (26.8% SA), and a 15.4% hard contact% (33% SA). Using BABIP against to our advantage here, Kuhl is coming off outings of .000 and .077, matching those with his strong contact% numbers, we like Kuhl in this home start against a lineup that he is not exposed to. The Giants come into Saturday's matchup as losers of their last five of seven games where they averaged 3.6 RPG. Jeff Samardzija takes the ball for San Fran who has posted a 9.23 era over his last 12 IP on 17 hits, 9 BBs, 11 Ks and 3 HRs. Samardzija is coming off a road loss against the Phillies where he allowed 5 runs through 4 IP on 3 BBs, 3 Ks and 2 HRs. Its interesting to note that Samardzija saw his aFBv increase from his previous start of 91.4 mph (SA) to 94.3 mph in his most recent below-average performance. When going to back to look at his 2017 numbers, Samardzija went through the same mph bump in late April, his next two following starts were also below-average. What this could mean is that due to Samardzija's poor start to the season (which he also saw early 2017), he is trying to work through some mechanical changes which is causing the bump in velo. With that being said, we will fade Samardzija in this road start as he works through these changes against a red hot Pirates lineup that has 128 ABs against him.
