on this forum it was stated that new jersey is going to charge 8% of the
gross wager. pa is going to charge 30%+ on what I assume is the net
profit of the sportsbook. there is a huge difference between a tax on
the gross amount bet, a tax on winning bets, a tax on the gross profit
before certain expenses, or a tax on the bottom line net profit.

can anyone say with some certainty what the tax rate for a particular
state is and what income stream it will be based upon? thanks

Casino operators in Pa are talking to the state about lowering the tax rate........every tax rate in each state has to do with gross revenue except for Kentucky, they want a tax rate on the total handle which equals to 400% tax rate, lol, never gonna happen.

Under Act 42, which set the tax, the casinos are the only outlets who can apply for a $10 million license fee to provide sports gambling at the casinos or online sports gambling through an app.

As for the state tax, it’s paid by the casino out of their profits, not the person betting.

“That tax is not going to impact the individual bettor,” says Berry.

Yes, the proposed taxes are a tax on sports betting revenue — the amount retained by the house ("the hold").

It is worth noting that all these new sports books will have to pay a .25% federal excise tax on the handle as Vegas does now. A sports book with a handle of $10,000,000 now has to pay the federal government $25,000 (0.25% times $10,000,000)

A Congresswoman from Nevada has introduced a bill to get rid of the federal tax but it has gone nowhere.
