    Quote of the Day
“Burt Reynolds was one of the kindest and most generous people I have ever worked with. He took me under his wing when I was first starting out as an actor and offered friendship, advice and guidance. I’ll never forget how much that meant to me.”
    Paul Wesley

    Friday’s quiz
In the football scenes in The Longest Yard, what number did Burt Reynolds’ character Paul Crewe wear?

    Thursday’s quiz
Martin Sheen played President Bartlet in the old TV show, The West Wing.

    Wednesday’s quiz
Doug Flutie and Herschel Walker played for the New Jersey Generals in the old USFL.

    **************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend almost here

    13) Pat O’Hara is the Tennessee Titans’ QB coach; maybe you’ve never heard of him, but chances are, you’ve seen him in the movies or watched him play ball on TV. More likely the movies.

    O’Hara’s resume:
1987-90— Played (backup) QB at USC; he was Todd Marinovich’s backup
1991— Backup QB for the Buccaneers
1992— Played for Ohio Glory in the WLAF
1992— Backup QB for the Chargers.
1995-2000— QB for Orlando Predators in the Arena League
2001-02— QB for Toronto Phantoms in the Arena League
2003-06— QB for Tampa Bay Storm in the Arena League.

Since his playing days ended (he was on three Arena Bowl champs), O’Hara has been head coach of four different Arena League teams, and for the last three years, was an assistant coach with the Houston Texans. Now he is with the Titans.

Despite all that, here’s where you’re most likely to have seen Pat O’Hara; he has appeared in five movies; he was Tyler Cherubini in Any Given Sunday, the backup QB who got hurt, which put third-stringer Willie Beamon (Jamie Foxx) into the game.

O’Hara has also been the football consultant on 13 different Hollywood movies, including The Waterboy, Invincible and the remake of The Longest Yard. Interesting career.

    12) Monday night in Los Angeles, Mets’ 3B Todd Frazier dove into the stands to try and make a catch— when he produced a baseball to the umpire, the batter was called out, but in the video, you can see a woman pointing to something on the ground.

Turns out she was pointing to the ball that Frazier didn’t catch; the ball Frazier shows the ump was a rubber baseball that was in a bag that Frazier landed on when he dove into the stands.

Weird thing about this is that is was the Mets’ TV crew that uncovered this mistake. Makes the umpires look bad. You wonder if a rule change will result from this, as far as umpires being more aggressive in making sure the player actually caught the ball.

    11) Fantasy baseball is usually fun; except when your team gets eliminated from the playoffs, which mine did 10 days ago, mostly because Jose Abreu needed emergency abdominal surgery, and played in only one game that week. Not good.

Turns out the surgery was for “testicular torsion” which involves twisting of the spermatic cord, which has the effect of reducing blood flow to the affected testicle. Ouch.

From Abreu: “It was one of my testicles turned sideways and was strangled. The doctor had to perform emergency surgery to save it. I never thought about it, but it was serious. The doctors they did a very good job and everything is good. They saved the testicle. I’m really glad and thankful like I said before for all the people who helped me and who were there for me. I feel very grateful right now.”

Thankfully he is OK, but why doesn’t stuff like this happen in the offseason?

    10) Houston Texans have a different starting QB for the 6th year in a row- DeShaun Watson. The previous five?

Tom Savage, Brock Osweiler, Brian Hoyer, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Matt Schaub.

    9) In the last 50 years, there has been only one QB taken in the first round of the NFL Draft who never started a game for the team that drafted him.

Rich Campbell went to college at Cal, wound up lasting four years in the NFL, all with Green Bay (1981-84)— he appeared in seven games, completed 31-68 passes for 3 TD’s, 9 INT’s.

    8) Former NFL QB Jay Cutler is a bit player on the reality show Very Cavallari that is on the E! Channel and stars his wife Kristin, a fashion designer who has been on other reality shows and has had small roles in movies.

Cutler has a dry sense of humor; you can see why CBS was going to hire him to analyze NFL games LY before he made a comeback (for $10M) with the Dolphins last year.

    7) ESPN’s field mikes are cranked up so loud for Sunday Night Baseball; every time a guy hits a medium fly ball it sounds like a clap of thunder that could wipe out a small city.

    6) Baseball oddity; Tuesday night, Marlins walked Phillies’ SS Mike Kingery intentionally his first time up, to get to the pitcher. Next time thru the lineup, they walked Cesar Hernandez on purpose, to get to Kingery. I’m betting that doesn’t happen very often.

    5) From ESPN.com:

Over last 15 regular seasons, NFL favorites are 1,859-1,860-11 against the spread
During that time, over is 1,890-1,886-64.
Thursday NFL games; since 2003, favorites are 97-66-5 vs spread.

Looking at odds to win the Super Bowl, defending champ Eagles have the 10th-lowest odds. Not a lot of respect there.

    4) RIP Burt Reynolds, 82, one of the biggest TV/movie stars of the 70’s/80’s. My favorite movie of his is the original The Longest Yard.

Back in the day, Reynolds was a running back at Florida State when the QB was Lee Corso; what a combo those two must have been. Bet they had a ton of fun.

    RIP, sir.

    3) Geno Crandall, a two-time all-Big Sky Conference guard at North Dakota, announced that he would be graduating over the summer, transferring to Gonzaga for his final year of eligibility.

One small problem; Crandall hasn’t graduated from North Dakota yet. To be a graduate transfer, you actually have to graduate.

If it takes him an extra semester to graduate from North Dakota, he could still bolt after the first semester and play for the Zags in the second semester. Crandall scored 28 points in a game for North Dakota AGAINST Gonzaga last season- he scored 16.6 ppg LY.

    2) If you don’t think the NFL is still the king of American sports, consider this; in the heat of the baseball pennant race, with Falcons-Eagles the NFL opener Thursday, only four major league games were scheduled. Four out of a possible 15.

    1) 2018 major league payrolls:
    — Boston $233,752,429
    — LA Dodgers $187,318,213
    — Bronx $166,111,632
    — Oakland $65,985,833

    Go figure.

    GAME RECAP

ROARING DEFENCE LEADS LIONS TO VICTORY OVER REDBLACKS

VANCOUVER – The BC Lions snapped a two-game losing skid, but may have paid a heavy price in the process, losing their starting centre and quarterback to injury, as they defeated the Ottawa REDBLACKS 26-14 on Friday night.

Jonathon Jennings completed 10/12 passes with a touchdown in relief of Lulay, while receiver Ricky Collins Jr. recorded his first 100 yard receiving game, setting a new career high with 10 catches for 105 yards.

Odell Willis led the way for the BC Lions defence with three sacks, as they created problems for the REDBLACKS all night long, recording six total sacks and forcing three interceptions as Ottawa’s quarterbacks found no room to work for much of the game.

It was a rough start for the Lions, as starting C Cody Husband went down with a knee injury just eight seconds into the game, followed by QB Travis Lulay suffering an eye injury after a sack on the ensuing play. Husband did not return.

Lulay would return on the following BC drive, and appeared to suffer no damage to his vision as he wasted no time before finding Ricky Collins in the end zone for a Lionstouchdown.

The Lions defence made a big play of their own later in the first quarter, as DB Winston Rose took advantage of an an off-balance throw from Harris and grabbed it for an easy interception. Despite strong starting field position, an unsuccessful fake field goal attempt left the Lions without any points on the drive.

Both defences were tenacious in the opening frame, combining for three quarterback sacks and giving Lulay and Harris very little time to breathe under centre.

A punt single from Richie Leone got the REDBLACKS on the board early in the second quarter.

With Husband out of the game for the Lions, Lulay struggled to get on the same page as his backup centre, stifling the BC offence.

Lions DB Anthony Orange nearly had an easy pick-six after perfectly predicting a WR screen, but just couldn’t hold onto the ball and settled for a knockdown. But it wouldn’t be long before the Lions defence capitalized again, as DB Alex Thompson picked off Harris for the second time of the half.

The injury bug plagued the Lions following the interception as Lulay went down again, this time with a head injury after a collision with two Ottawa defenders. Lulay entered the concussion protocol following the hit and did not return to the game.

QB Jonathon Jennings took over for Lulay at pivot for the Lions.

A field goal from BC K Ty Long extended the home team’s lead to nine heading into the half.

The Lions D was the story of the first half, recording four sacks and three turnovers and holding the REDBLACKS offence to just a single point.

The start of the second half saw a change at QB for the REDBLACKS, as Dominique Davis took over for Harris under centre. Unfortunately for Ottawa, the change in process led to the same results, as Davis saw his second pass attempt picked off by LB Bo Lokombo, deep in REDBLACKS territory.

With a short field in front of him Jennings made no mistakes, gaining a first down before finding Bryan Burnham in the end zone. Jennings’ two-point convert pass attempt to Collins was no good, and the Lions led by 15.

After a two-and-out with Davis at the helm, the REDBLACKS brought Harris back into the game for their next drive. Starting at the BC 45 after an illegal punt, Harris got back into his groove, finding Diontae Spencer for a 12-yard gain before leaning on RB William Powell, who accounted for six of the next seven plays as Ottawa marched down to the goal line.

Down 15 points late in the third quarter and facing 3rd and two, REDBLACKS HC Rick Campbell put his trust in his quarterback, and Harris did not disappoint, finding WR Brad Sinopoli all alone in the back of the end zone for the touchdown. K Lewis Ward’s convert narrowed the BC lead to just eight.

Ward would chip away at the BC lead even further with a field goal on the REDBLACKS following drive, as the momentum seemed to have flipped from the first half.

Long and Ward would trade field goals late in the fourth quarter.

Jennings and the Lions took over at their own 35-yard line and took their time on their final drive of the game, killing the clock with plenty of run plays and short passes. Shortly after the three-minute warning RB Jeremiah Johnson broke free for a 33-yard gain down the right sideline, putting the Lions inside the 10-yard line.

Just two plays later, Johnson would cap off the drive himself with a six-yard scamper into the end zone, putting the Lions up 12 with under two minutes remaining in the game, a lead which would prove enough for the win.

    Quote of the Day
“I played for a tough sucker, and I was afraid of him, and we played our ass off for him because we feared him. I don’t see that with this guy. He’s chest bumping and all that. I’m the head of the corporation, I’m the CEO, I’m the chairman of the board, I’m talking to the stockholders telling them here’s how we’re going to do at the end of the quarter. I’m selling this thing. And I’m not delivering the goods, which is championships. You’ve got to face the criticism. I’m sorry, but he’s not my kind of coach. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again.”

    Saturday’s quiz
Who won the first Super Bowl, and who did they beat?

    Friday’s quiz
In the football scenes in The Longest Yard, Burt Reynolds’ character Paul Crewe wore number 22, one of the numbers he wore as a running back at Florida State.

    Thursday’s quiz
Martin Sheen played President Bartlet in the old TV show, The West Wing.

    ****************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Things I’m looking for this weekend…….

    13) Chiefs were +45 in turnovers the last three years, in large part because Alex Smith doesn’t turn the ball over very much, but now Smith plays for the Redskins and Patrick Mahomes is the starter, with only one NFL start under his belt.

Chiefs @ Chargers might be the most interesting matchup in NFL’s Week 1.

    12) Kansas State had to rally from down 24-12 in 4th quarter vs I-AA South Dakota LW, now they’re a home underdog to Mississippi State. K-State has traditionally been profitable as a home underdog under Bill Snyder- interesting noon game.

    11) Bills made the playoffs for the first time in 19 years LY, then traded their QB away and drafted Josh Allen, who isn’t the starter yet. Buffalo has the lowest over/under win total in Las Vegas for this season- there are low expectations for their opener in Baltimore.

    10) Lane Kiffin’s Florida Atlantic squad was pummeled by Oklahoma LW; now they’re a home favorite against Air Force and its option attack— how will the Owls bounce back?

    9) Tyrod Taylor is that QB Buffalo traded away; he’s the starter in Cleveland now— the Browns have been bet down by the public. Steelers opened at -7; now they’re -4. Cleveland turned the ball over 41 times LY; if Taylor can cut that number in half, Browns will be a vastly improved team this season.

    8) Chip Kelly’s UCLA team lost as a 14-point home favorite last week; now they’re a 30-point underdog at Oklahoma. Plus, UCLA’s QB got hurt LW; thats no bueno.

    7) Sportsbooks in New Jersey are taking lot of Super Bowl bets on the Giants, so their opener with Jacksonville will be interesting.

Jaguars are 3-17 vs spread in their last 20 games vs NFC teams, but they made the playoffs LY, while the Giants were going 3-13.

    6) Detroit Tigers’ two TV announcers apparently got into a fight after Tuesday night’s game and were not on the air for Wednesday’s game. Imagine if that had happened during the game? Will these guys ever work together again? They might’ve ruined both of their careers.

    5) Jets’ rookie Sam Darnold will become the youngest player in Super Bowl era to start at QB in a Week 1 game. New Lions’ coach Matt Patricia went to college at RPI, near where I live, in Troy, NY. Patricia’s defenses in New England stopped the Jets; how will his Detroit defense do?

    4) USC at Stanford is an interesting game in the Pac-12; Trojans are starting a true freshman QB who left high school a year early, so he should really still be in HS. Awful young to be a starter.

    3) Jameis Winston is suspended for the first three games this season, so the Buccaneers head to New Orleans with Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starting QB. Biggest spread of Week 1; can the Bucs hang with their division rival with their backup QB starting?

    2) Herm Edwards started his Arizona State tenure with a 49-7 win over Texas-San Antonio (the Roadrunners!!!) last week; now Michigan State is coming to town. Big jump in class.

Supposed to be 107 in Tempe Saturday night; will conditioning be a factor?

    1) Norv Turner is Carolina’s new offensive coordinator; Turner coaching Cam Newton’s offense promises to be fascinating. Having the Cowboys in town for the opener and the 4:25 FOX game adds to the build-up.

    Enjoy the games this weekend!!!!

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-5 SU, 4-5-1 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (3-7 SU, 4-6 ATS)

    Point-spread: Hamilton -5
    Total: 52

    Game Overview

Hamilton drew first blood in this East Division home-and-home series while also closing the gap with Ottawa in the standings. The Tiger-Cats were clicking on all cylinders this Monday with Jeremiah Masoli throwing for 385 yards and three touchdowns, while Alex Green added another 115 yards and two scores on the ground. Hamilton’s defense did its part by holding Toronto to 221 yards of total offense.

The Argonauts have failed to cover in four of their last six games overall, but they are 3-2 against the spread at home this season. The total went OVER 51 points in Monday’s loss and it has gone OVER in four of those last six games. McLeod Bethel-Thompson completed fewer than half of his 29 passing attempts against the Tiger-Cats and he failed to get the offense into the end zone through the air.

    Betting Trends

-- Hamilton has covered ATS in 10 of the last 13 meetings and the total has gone OVER in five of the last seven meetings of the East Division tilt.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (6-4 SU, 6-4 ATS) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-6 SU, 5-5-1 ATS)
    Point-spread: Winnipeg -3
    Total: 53

    Game Overview

Saskatchewan extended its current winning streak to three games both SU and ATS with Sunday’s win in this home-and-home opener. The total went OVER 52 points in that game and it has now gone OVER in four of its last six games with a scoring average of 27.8 points per game. Zach Collaros completed 18 of his 30 passing attempts for 250 yards with seven of those receptions going to Naaman Roosevelt for 86 yards.

This Saturday’s rematch suddenly becomes very important to Winnipeg’s playoff positioning in the jumbled West Division standings. The Blue Bombers are looking to snap a three-game skid both SU and ATS. The total has gone OVER in five of their last six games behind a defense that has allowed an average of 28.5 PPG.

    Betting Trends

-- Winnipeg has won four of its last six home games against the Roughriders and the total has gone OVER in five of the last six meetings overall in this West Division matchup.

Calgary Stampeders (9-1 SU, 6-4 ATS) at Edmonton Eskimos (6-5 SU, 5-6 ATS)
    Point-spread: Calgary -3
    Total: 53

    Game Overview

Calgary has not been as dominant in its last four games at 1-3 ATS after covering the spread in five of its first six games. The total stayed UNDER 54 points in Monday’s win and in seven of its first 10 games. The difference in the first installment of this West Division home-and-home was a last-second 43-yard field goal by Rene Paredes as part of his five field goals in that game. Bo Levi Mitchell did injure his knee, but he was back in the game for that final scoring drive.

The Eskimos have now dropped three of their last four games SU with the total staying UNDER or ending as a PUSH if four of their last five games. Edmonton returns home with a SU 4-1 record this season while going 2-3 ATS. Mike Reilly ended the game against Calgary with 250 yards passing and one touchdown throw against one interception. He continues to lead the CFL with a total of 3,546 passing yards and 23 touchdown throws.

    Betting Trends

-- Edmonton has covered the spread in four of its last five games against the Stampeders, but it is just 1-6 SU in the last seven meetings. The total has stayed UNDER in six of the last nine meetings in Calgary.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 14
    David Schwab

There were quite a few twists and turns in Week 13 with the results having an impact on the playoff race in each division. British Columbia got things started by picking up a key win in the West with Friday night’s 26-14 victory over Ottawa as a slight 1 -point home favorite.

In the first of three games on Saturday, Hamilton closed the gap in the East by beating Toronto 36-25 as a five-point favorite on the road. Saskatchewan continued its winning ways by knocking off Winnipeg 32-27 as a four-point road underdog and Edmonton evened up its home-and-home series against Calgary with a 48-42 upset as a two-point underdog at home.

    Friday, Sept. 14

British Columbia Lions (4-6 SU, 6-4 ATS) at Montreal Alouettes (3-8 SU, 5-6 ATS)

    Point-spread: BC -3
    Total: 49

    Game Overview

BC continues to bring up the rear in the West, but with last week’s win it is still in contention for a crossover position in the playoffs. The Lions have covered against the spread in five of their last seven games with the total staying UNDER or ending as a PUSH in six of those seven contests. One injury note for this Friday is quarterback Travis Lulay, who remains in concussion protocol.

Montreal is coming off a bye after stunning Ottawa 21-11 in Week 12 as a heavy 16-point road underdog. This was the Alouettes second straight-up win in a row and they have now covered in their last four games. Earlier in the season, Montreal traded for quarterback Johnny Manziel, but it may have found its new starter in Antonio Pipkin. He has completed 64.3 percent of his 84 passing attempts for 762 yards through three previous starts.

    Betting Trends

-- The Lions have won their last five games against the Alouettes both SU and ATS with the total going OVER in seven of the last 10 meetings in Montreal. BC started this season with a 22-10 victory against Montreal as an 8 -point favorite at home.

    Saturday, Sept. 15

Calgary Stampeders (9-2 SU, 6-5 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-5 SU, 5-5-1 ATS)

    Point-spread: Calgary -1
    Total: 53

    Game Overview

Calgary’s breathing room in the West Division title race just became a bit tighter with the loss to its bitter rivals. It is 2-2 SU in its last four games and 1-4 ATS in its last five outings. The total went way OVER 50 points against Edmonton in Week 13 and it has gone OVER in four of the Stampeders last six games. Their points-allowed average has ballooned to 33.5 over their past four contests. Calgary trailed by 20 points in Saturday’s loss heading into the fourth quarter.

The Tiger-Cats have worked their way into a tie for first in the East with a SU three-game winning streak. They have covered in their last two games with the total going OVER in each outing. They are 2-3 ATS at home this season with the total going OVER in three of the five games. Jeramiah Masoli threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday’s win at Toronto and Hamilton piled up another 117 yards on the ground.

    Betting Trends

-- Calgary has covered in five of its last six road games against the Tiger-Cats and the total has stayed UNDER in five of those six games. Back in Week 1, the Stampeders hammered out a 28-14 victory at home against Hamilton as 7 -point favorites.

Ottawa RedBlacks (6-5 SU, 4-7 ATS) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (7-4 SU, 7-4 ATS)
    Point-spread: Saskatchewan OFF
    Total: OFF

    Game Overview

The RedBlacks have started the second half of their season with back-to-back losses both SU and ATS with the total staying UNDER in each game. They started the season with a 40-17 romp over Saskatchewan as two-point home favorites, but they have only managed to score a combined 25 points in those two recent setbacks. Trevor Harris threw a pair of interceptions in the loss to BC and he now has nine picks on the year against 11 touchdown throws.

The longest current winning streak in the CFL belongs to Saskatchewan at four games both SU and ATS. The recent sweep of Winnipeg with a combined 63 points scored has raised the Roughriders’ scoring average of the year to 25.3 points per game. Much of the team’s recent success could be pinned to the play of quarterback Zach Collaros, but he left Saturday’s game against the Blue Bombers in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury.

    Betting Trends

-- The Roughriders have a SU 4-2 edge in its last six games against Ottawa. However, the RedBlacks have covered the spread in six of the last nine meetings. The total has gone OVER in six of the last seven meetings in Saskatchewan.

    GAME RECAP

DEFENCE DOMINANT AS LIONS DOWN ALS 32-14

MONTREAL — A strong defensive performance earned the BC Lions a 32-14 victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Friday night at Percival Molson Stadium.

The BC defence dominated the line of scrimmage, sacking Montreal quarterback Antonio Pipkin seven times and forcing the young Als pivot into four interceptions. Offensively, Lions quarterback Jonathon Jennings was a respectable 19-for-30 with a touchdown and interception in relief of Travis Lulay, who left the game early in the first quarter with a shoulder injury.

Coordinator Mark Washington’s BC defence featured some gaudy numbers: Davon Coleman and Shawn Lemon each recorded a pair of sacks, Anthony Orange had two interceptions and Bo Lokombo registered an interception and a sack in the win.

A pair of fourth quarter pick-six touchdowns put the game to bed and added emphasis to what had already been an outrageously good performance by the BC defence.

The win was the Lions’ first of the 2018 season on the road, and moved Wally Buono’s squad into the crossover playoff spot — level on 10 points with Winnipeg, but ahead based on a game in-hand.

The visitors gained momentum on the opening possession, as BC linebacker Bo Lokombo rose above Montreal’s Ernest Jackson to intercept an Antonio Pipkin pass.

Lulay’s first pass attempt then went for a 41-yard completion to Bryan Burnham, setting the Lions up inside the red zone. The veteran BC quarterback suffered a shoulder injury on the next play — an overthrown end zone shot to Shaq Johnson — and was forced from the game.

Jennings came in off the bench and immediately zipped his first pass to Burnham for a 16-yard touchdown; Ty Long‘s convert gave the Lions a 7-0 lead.

With both defences dominating, it took a key mistake — Pipkin’s second interception of the day, this time to Anthony Orange — to change the scoreboard, as Long and the Lions booted a 25-yard field goal to make it a 10-point game.

Led by some strong William Stanback runs, Montreal’s offence strung together a pair of prolonged drives that resulted in two Boris Bede field goals — one from 46, the other from 29 yards out — and sent the teams to the locker room with BC in front 10-6.

A booming punt single from Bede cut the Alouette deficit to three early in the third quarter, but Long and the Lions responded with a 30-yard field goal to make it a 13-6 ballgame.

BC appeared on the brink of adding to their lead late in the third quarter, as Ty Long set up for a chip-shot 15-yard field goal; Chip Cox broke through the line to block the attempt, and Tevaughn Campbell recovered the loose ball then sprinted 87 yards to pay dirt. Bede’s subsequent convert gave the Als their first lead of the night.

Jennings responded by marching the Lions into field goal range, and the visitors regained the lead two minutes into the fourth quarter via 45-yard Ty Long field goal.

The BC defence continued to dominate, and forced Montreal to concede a safety.

T.J. Lee then sealed the victory for the Lions with a pick-six on a Pipkin throw, as the Eastern Washington product made a perfect read, broke on a pass and took it 37 yards to the house.

Orange followed Lee’s interception up with an exclamation point, hauling in a gift from Pipkin and turning it into a 54-yard pick-six of his own. Long’s convert polished off the night’s scoring and sent the Lions home with an emphatic 18-point win.

The victory moved BC to 5-6 on the season; Wally Buono’s squad will now return home for a date with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-5) next Saturday (10 p.m. ET).

Montreal fell to 3-9 with the loss; Mike Sherman’s team will face the Bombers (5-7) in a must-win contest next Friday (8:30 p.m. ET) at IGF.
