Love the BC pick. Calgary is beat up, have a bye locked up, and have absolutely nothing to play for. BC does. Taking BC money line too. Been a long time since Calgary has lost at home. I think this is the game they go through the motions and lose.

    GAME RECAP

MASOLI, TASKER LEAD TICATS TO BIG WIN OVER ARGOS

TORONTO — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats put on an offensive showcase in their 34-20 road victory against the Toronto Argonauts on Friday night, with quarterback Jeremiah Masoli throwing for 338 yards and four touchdowns. The Tabbies are now tied atop the CFL East with the Ottawa REDBLACKS after claiming their eighth win of the season.

What started as a back-and-forth game quickly turned into an offensive onslaught, with Hamilton pulling away and scoring 21 unanswered points in the second half.

Luke Tasker had a big game for Hamilton with four catches for 63 yards and an impressive three touchdowns, while Brandon Banks made big plays all night long with eight catches for 178 yards and a touchdown.

S.J. Green led the Double Blue with seven catches for 127 yards and a touchdown, and running back Brandon Burks made an impact out of the backfield for the Argos with 94 total yards and a 27-yard receiving touchdown for his first CFL score.

James Franklin started the game looking sharp for Toronto and finished with 292 yards and two touchdowns through the air, but the Ticats’ defence stepped up with a fumble recovery and an interception in the second half.

The Ticats struck first on the opening drive of the game after Masoli put his team in field goal range with an accurate 23-yard pass to Banks near the right sideline. Lirim Hajrullahu made the kick from 45 yards out to give Hamilton the early lead.

The Argos answered back right away with a field goal that was set up by catches from Duron Carter and Llevi Noel. Rookie kicker Drew Brown knocked the 44-yard kick through the uprights to tie the game with his first career CFL field goal.

Masoli continued to look sharp on the next drive, finding Banks once again for a 36-yard connection. Banks displayed his game-changing speed and turned it up the field to gain 23 yards after the catch before being forced out of bounds. Masoli nearly got into the end zone himself two plays later on a 12-yard rush before being tackled by defensive back Matt Webster, and the quarterback completed a nice touch pass to Tasker for a four-yard touchdown to finish the drive off. Hajrullahu kicked the extra point through to give Hamilton a 10-3 lead.

The game’s back-and-forth start continued as soon as the Argos got the ball back, with Burks showcasing his ability to make big plays. Franklin started the drive off by finding Green through the air for 16 yards, and Burks took over from there by turning two short receptions into a 27-yard gain and a 17-yard touchdown. Brown made his first-career extra point to tie the game early on at 10 apiece.

Banks put the Ticats back on top with a 17-yard touchdown catch after a tough defensive pass interference penalty against Toronto put the team in scoring position. Defensive back Ronnie Yell was called for the penalty while covering Banks on a missed pass attempt deep down the field, and Argos head coach Marc Trestman unsuccessfully challenged the call. Hajrullahu kicked the convert to give the Ticats a 17-10 lead in the second quarter.

The Ticats added a point to their lead before the half after a big 63-yard punt from Hajrullahu ended up in the Argos’ end zone for the single.

The Double Blue appeared to be driving to tie the game at the start of the third quarter, but Ticats defensive back Delvin Breaux made a brilliant play to strip the ball from Franklin as the quarterback picked yards up with his legs. Breaux scooped up his own fumble and returned it 21 yards to set up Masoli and the offence. But the Argos came up with a turnover of their own when Masoli’s pass into tight coverage ended up being tipped into the waiting hands of Yell for the interception.

Hamilton’s defence stood strong to force the punt, and the Tabbies began to move the ball once again on offence. Masoli threw a strike to Josh Johnson for 18 yards before hitting Banks for a short gain that set up Tasker’s second touchdown of the night. Masoli stood tall against the Argos’ pass rush to find Tasker in the end zone for the five-yard score, and Hajrullahu added the extra point to extend Hamilton’s lead to 15 points.

Tasker wasn’t done there, as the receiver made an impact on the Ticats next drive with a 48-yard touchdown deep down the right side of the field. Masoli dropped the ball in perfectly as Tasker outran the Argos defender to the goal line. The extra point went wide, leaving Hamilton with a 31-10 lead near the end of the third quarter.

The Argos added a 21-yard field goal from Brown after Green brought the team into kicking range on a 43-yard catch and run, with 37 yards coming after the catch.

Hamilton came up with another second half turnover when defensive back Cariel Brooks picked off Franklin as the quarterback attempted to lead his team from behind. Masoli then found Banks for a 39-yard gain that set up Hajrullahu for a 27-yard field goal to extend the team’s lead once again.

Masoli attempted to add to the Ticats’ lead by going deep once more, but the pass was caught by Toronto defensive back Marcus Roberson for his first career CFL interception.

Green added a 10-yard touchdown in the game’s final minute, but it was too little too late as the Ticats walked away with the 34-20 victory.

Week 19 will see the Hamilton Tiger-Cats travel to take on the Ottawa REDBLACKS in a crucial divisional matchup next Friday, while the Toronto Argonauts will host the Montreal Alouettes next Saturday.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (10-5 SU, 8-7 ATS) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-7 SU, 8-6-1 ATS)

    Point-spread: Winnipeg -3
    Total: 53

    Game Overview

Saskatchewan has just one SU loss in its last eight games with Monday’s win against Edmonton. This was the first time the Roughriders were able to cover in their last four games and the total stayed UNDER for the first time in their last six contests. Defensive end Willie Jefferson returned a late fourth-quarter interception 49 yards for a score in Monday’s come-from-behind victory.

The Blue Bombers helped their postseason plans with Friday’s win while extending their current winning streak to three games both SU and ATS. This followed a four-game losing streak (SU and ATS) in what has been a wild roller-coaster ride since early August. Matt Nichols threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns against Ottawa and, on the year, he has completed 64.5 percent of his 341 passing attempts for 2,633 yards and 15 scores.

-- Saskatchewan has already won a home-and-home series against Winnipeg both SU and ATS heading into the third meeting this season between the two West Division foes. It won the first two meetings by a combined score of 63-50 and the total went OVER in each of those games.

Ottawa RedBlacks (8-6 SU, 6-8 ATS) at Edmonton Eskimos (7-8 SU, 6-9 ATS)
    Point-spread: Edmonton -3
    Total: 51

    Game Overview

Despite Friday’s loss to Winnipeg, the RedBlacks still clinched a playoff berth in the East. The total went OVER 52 points in that game after staying UNDER in four of their previous six games. Trevor Harris played one of his better games of the year last Friday night with 349 yards passing and three scoring strikes against no interceptions. William Powell turned in another strong effort running the ball with 95 yards on 14 carries.

Edmonton is currently on the outside looking in when it comes to the CFL playoff picture in the West. Mike Reilly was picked off three times in Monday’s loss and he completed just 48.1 percent of his 27 passing attempts on the day. This was the Eskimos’ third loss in a row both SU and ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in all three setbacks after this once potent offense was held to a combined 30 points.

    Betting Trends

-- Edmonton has won eight of its last nine home games against Ottawa SU. It has a 6-3 edge ATS and the total has gone OVER in six of those nine meetings.

British Columbia Lions (7-7 AU, 8-6 ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (12-2 SU, 8-6 ATS)
    Point-spread: Calgary-10
    Total: 49

    Game Overview

The Lions are right in the thick of things for a playoff berth in the jumbled West Division standings. With Saturday’s win, they are 4-1 SU in their last five games with a 3-2 record ATS. With the total staying UNDER against Toronto, it has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in eight of BC’s last nine games. Jonathon Jennings continues to get the call at quarterback for an injured Travis Lulay on an offense that is averaging 23.6 PPG.

Calgary’s lead over Saskatchewan in the West sits at a game and half, so it still needs to win on Saturday to stay on track for another division title. There has to be some concern with Monday’s effort, but for some reason Montreal always plays the Stampeders’ tough. This is still a team that is averaging 30.7 points per game behind Bo Levi Mitchel at quarterback while holding opposing teams to 19.3 PPG.

    Betting Trends

-- Calgary beat BC 27-18 in early August as a 12 -point home favorite to extend its SU winning streak against the Lions to five games. The total stayed UNDER 49 points in that game and it has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings.

    Saturday’s quiz

    Friday’s quiz
Cincinnati Bengals beat the Houston Oilers the last time they won a playoff game, in 1990.

    **************************

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

    13) Michigan State 21, Penn State 17— To paraphrase Bill Raftery, Spartans coach Mark Dantonio has onions; MSU tried a fake FG with 5:31 left, down 17-14- it didn’t work, but they got the ball back and didn’t just play for tying FG- they threw a GW TD pass with 0:19 left.

If you remember, Michigan State beat Notre Dame a few years back by scoring a TD on a fake FG in OT. You can’t play scared and be a great coach.

    12) Tennessee 30, Auburn 24— Vols snapped an 11-game SEC losing streak, ending a six-game skid vs Auburn- their last win over the Tigers was in 1999.

Auburn is 1-3 in SEC play and obviously, they haven’t played Alabama yet; Auburn has fired coaches for less- they canned Gene Chizik in 2012, two years after he won a national title.

    11) Virginia Tech 22, North Carolina 19— What is a quarterback? You can use all the numbers you want, but the essence of what a QB is/should be was summed up by Hokies’ QB Ryan Willis, who led an 18-play, 98-yard drive that wound up with Tech scoring the game-winning TD with 0:19 left in Chapel Hill.

Willis scrambled for a first down on 4th-and-7 when their situation looked hopeless- thats what good QB’s do, whatever needs to be done.

    10) Florida 37, Vanderbilt 27— Vandy was up 21-3 in 2nd quarter- Florida turned ball over three times, but Gators stormed back to win- they had 576-336 yardage edge, ran 92 plays compared to 58 for the Commodores. Gators were 12-19 on third down, Vanderbilt 3-12.

In 2nd quarter, there was war of words between two head coaches while a Vandy player was hurt; benches almost emptied. After the game, the coaches talked for 20-30 seconds and all seemed peaceful then.

    9) Northwestern 34, Nebraska 31 OT— Cornhuskers’ season from hell continues; they’re 0-6 for the first time ever, losing game here when they led 31-21 with 3:00 left- Northwestern tied game with 0:12 left in regulation.

Clayton Thorson threw for 455 yards for the Wildcats. Dating back to last year, Nebraska has now lost ten games in a row. Rough start to the Scott Frost era in Lincoln.

    8) Maryland 34, Rutgers 7— Scarlet Knights threw 17 passes in this game; seven of them were caught, five by Maryland defenders, only two by Rutgers receivers. This is not good.

Rutgers lost its last six games (1-4 vs spread), five of them by 21+ points.

    7) Upsets of the Week:
    Tennessee (+14.5) 30, Auburn 24
    Liberty (+9.5) 22, Troy 16
    Texas Tech (+7.5) 17, TCU 14
    LSU (+7) 36, Georgia 16
    Kansas State (+7) 31, Oklahoma State 12

    6) Eastern Michigan 28, Toledo 26— Eagles led 28-3 at the half, hung on for dear life as they snapped a 4-game losing skid- EMU’s last four games were decided by total of 11 points.

    5) Central Florida 31, Memphis 30— Tigers were driving for winning FG in last minute, but after WR caught pass to the UCF 35 with 0:38 left, he strutted around for few seconds before realizing he had to line up again, because Memphis had no timeouts left. He had to sprint to other side of field and it took a few seconds.

Finally Memphis got lined up, but left tackle moved before the snap, which resulted in both a 10-second runoff and the 5-yard penalty- things unraveled from there- they never even got a FG try off.

    4) Oregon 30, Washington 27 OT— Huskies missed a 37-yard FG on last play of regulation, Oregon scored TD in OT and improved to 5-1. Teams combined to go 15-31 on third down, as offenses controlled the day, while a kicker ruined Washington’s day.

    3) Iowa State 30, Oklahoma State 14— ISU coach Matt Campbell makes $3.5M a year; I hope Cyclone fans are enjoying this, because Campbell is about to get a really big raise, whether it is from a bigger-$$$ school or an NFL team— this guy is really good.

I’ve never been to Iowa, but people in Ames seem happier when they win than most people when they win. Fans at Iowa State were really, really happy after this game.

    2) Dodgers 4, Brewers 3— Justin Turner hit the GW homer in the 8th inning.
Astros 7, Red Sox 2— Justin Verlander allowed two hits in six IP; imagine that, a starting pitcher actually finishing the sixth inning. Revolutionary.

    1) Ole Miss 37, Arkansas 33— Razorbacks led 30-17 with 8:00 left in third quarter, but let this game slip away and lost their sixth game in a row.

Rebels gained 613 yards on a rainy night in Little Rock, averaged 11.1 yds/pass attempt.
