    Preview: Marlins at Cardinals
    Gracenote
    Jun 6, 2018

The Miami Marlins will try to record consecutive wins for the first time in two weeks when they play the second of a three-game road series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. The Marlins won the opener 7-4 on Tuesday to snap a six-game skid, and they haven’t won two straight since May 22-23 at the New York Mets.

Four Miami relievers combined to retire the last 12 St. Louis batters of the game Tuesday, including Kyle Barraclough’s 11th consecutive scoreless outing. The bullpen might need to be at the ready again Wednesday with left-hander Wei-Yin Chen on the mound, as Chen has shown a tendency for early exits of late. The Cardinals hope to keep up their hot hitting against Chen – despite the loss Tuesday, they clubbed 12 hits, including three from slumping star Matt Carpenter. The loss was just the fourth in 10 games for St. Louis, which remained 3 1/2 games behind Milwaukee in the National League Central.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FS Florida (Miami), FS Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Wei-Yin Chen (1-3, 6.10 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Jack Flaherty (2-1, 2.62)

Chen has put together several solid outings for the Marlins, but he has mixed in a few clunkers, and his last start certainly qualified as the latter. The 32-year-old from Taiwan lasted only 1 2/3 innings and was dinged for four runs in a loss at San Diego. Chen’s only start against the Cardinals came in 2016, when he allowed four runs over six innings in a no-decision.

It appeared Flaherty might be the odd man out when Alex Reyes returned to the rotation, but with Reyes back on the shelf, the 22-year-old gets another run. He has made the most of the opportunity thus far, but he’s coming off his worst start of the season after allowing four runs (three earned) in five innings in a no-decision against Pittsburgh. Flaherty has racked up 36 strikeouts against nine walks in 34 1/3 innings.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. St. Louis OF Marcell Ozuna, who was acquired from Miami in the offseason, is 8-for-14 over his past four games.

    2. Marlins 2B Starlin Castro is 9-for-30 during a seven-game hitting streak.

    3. Miami 3B/RF Brian Anderson is 14-for-37 in 10 games against NL Central opponents this season.

    PREDICTION: Cardinals 7, Marlins 3

    Preview: Royals at Angels
    Gracenote
    Jun 6, 2018

The Los Angeles Angels have opened the month by winning four of their first five games and look to continue the upward trend on Wednesday, when they aim for a sweep of their three-game series against the visiting Kansas City Royals. Two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani is set to make his fifth start at home, where he is 2-1 with a 2.35 ERA.

Angels starter Andrew Heaney pitched a one-hitter in Tuesday’s 1-0 win, but the team’s celebration was tempered by an injury to shortstop Andrelton Simmons, who slipped on the dugout steps before the game and played two innings before leaving with a sprained right ankle. Simmons was on crutches after the contest but hopes to avoid the disabled list, while first baseman/designated hitter Albert Pujols is battling knee soreness and will be out of the lineup until at least Friday. Mike Trout served as the designated hitter Tuesday against the Royals, who have lost four of their last five games since taking two of three against Minnesota. Center fielder Jon Jay was 0-for-3 on Tuesday but had three singles in Monday’s series opener and has hit safely in 30 of his last 34 games.

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, FS Kansas City, FS West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Ian Kennedy (1-6, 6.08 ERA) vs. Angels RH Shohei Ohtani (4-1, 3.18)

Kennedy is looking to bounce back from a dismal outing against Oakland last Friday, when he allowed eight runs on seven hits over three innings in a 16-0 loss. The 33-year-old native Californian is winless over his last 10 starts, going 0-6 with a 7.40 ERA since his last win on April 7 at Cleveland. Ian Kinsler is 8-for-23 with two home runs against Kennedy, who owns a 3.86 ERA in eight career games (seven starts) against the Angels, including a 0.90 mark in his last three starts.

Ohtani received a no-decision last Wednesday after allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts over five innings against Detroit. The 23-year-old made a strong impression on the Tigers before leaving the game following a rain delay. “He's got a powerful arm and good stuff,” Detroit outfielder Nicholas Castellanos told reporters. "He was already throwing hard, but he hit 101 to Jeimar Candelario in a big spot in the fifth. Not a lot of guys can do that.”

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Angels starting pitchers have recorded an American League-best 2.61 ERA since May 1.

    2. Kansas City SS Alcides Escobar went 0-for-3 on Tuesday, snapping a six-game hitting streak.

    3. The Angels optioned INF Kaleb Cowart to Triple-A Salt Lake and recalled RHP Eduardo Paredes.

    PREDICTION: Angels 8, Royals 3

Hottest team: Mariners (14-3 last 17)

Nearly a week into June and the Astros are not leading the American League West race. Instead, it’s Seattle, who made a major statement in the series opener at Minute Maid Park by scoring six early runs in a 7-1 blowout of Houston. The Mariners extended their division advantage over the Astros to two games, while pulling off their fifth consecutive victory. During this hot stretch, Seattle has allowed one run in seven of the past 11 games.

The Mariners are a heavy underdog on Wednesday against Lance McCullers, Jr. and the Astros as the right-hander limited Seattle to one hit and one run in seven innings of a 4-1 in April. Wade LeBlanc counters for Seattle, as the Mariners own a 5-1 record in his six starts this season, while cashing the UNDER in all six of those outings.

Coldest team: Mets (2-10 last 12)

The month of May didn’t treat the Mets very well (10-18), but things have gone from bad to worse in the first week of June. New York has been amazingly bad by losing all five games on its current homestand, including Tuesday’s 2-1 setback to last-place Baltimore. The Mets followed up a six-run effort in four losses to the Cubs by scratching across a single run against the Orioles, but New York’s pitching has allowed four runs in the last two games.

New York finishes off its two-game interleague set with Baltimore prior to a visit from the Yankees this weekend. Zack Wheeler takes the mound for the Mets in this matinee affair as New York is winless in his past six starts, while the team is 0-5 in his five outings at Citi Field this season. The Mets look to avoid their fourth home sweep since the start of May, while Baltimore has won consecutive road games only twice this season.

Hottest pitcher: Daniel Mengden, Athletics (6-4, 2.91 ERA)

Since beginning the season at 0-2, Mengden has turned into one of the most reliable starters in baseball. Oakland has won eight of the right-hander’s last 10 starts with both losses coming to defending champion Houston. Mengden owns a 4-0 record in his past four outings, while yielding four earned runs in his last 30 innings of work. The Texas native looks to avenge a 6-3 home loss to the Rangers in April as Mengden takes the mound in Arlington trying to improve on a 3-1 road record this season.

Coldest pitcher: Ian Kennedy, Royals (1-6, 6.08 ERA)

It’s been a rough season in Kansas City for a team that is three years removed from hoisting the World Series trophy. The Royals continue their road trip against the Angels as Kennedy seeks his first win since April 7 at Cleveland as a +220 underdog. Kansas City owns an 0-5 record in Kennedy’s past five outings, including a 16-0 thrashing at the hands of Oakland last Friday in which the right-hander allowed eight runs in three innings. Kennedy pitched well against the Angels at home in April, giving up one earned run in six innings of a 7-1 defeat.

Biggest OVER run: Rockies (6-0 last six)

Colorado’s pitching was torched in its three-game sweep at the hands of Los Angeles this past weekend by allowing 33 runs. The Rockies’ offense turned things around in Tuesday’s rout of the Reds at Great American Ballpark, 9-6 to continue their OVER streak. Colorado improved to 9-1 in their last 10 road series openers, while scoring at least four runs in 10 consecutive games overall. Jon Gray may be in line to keep this OVER streak going as the Rockies’ right-hander has given up 19 runs in his last four starts, while the OVER has hit in three of his four outings away from Coors Field this season.

Biggest UNDER run: Nationals (10-0 last ten)

Only on a 6 total can you feel good about the UNDER hitting if Max Scherzer is on the mound. The three-time Cy Young Award winner tossed eight spectacular innings and struck out 13 batters in a 4-2 victory over Tampa Bay on Tuesday to barely cash the UNDER. Regardless, that streak is up to double-digits as the Nationals have not allowed more than four runs in any of their last 10 games. On the flip side, the offense has plated more than three runs only twice in the past five contests. Tanner Roark gets the start on Wednesday as the Nationals have drilled the UNDER in each of his last seven starts.

Matchup to watch: Phillies vs. Cubs

Philadelphia rebounded from an ugly weekend series sweep in San Francisco to cruise past Chicago, 6-1 at Wrigley Field on Tuesday. The Phillies not only cashed as +190 road underdogs, but their offense also got back into gear after getting limited to one run in the previous 27 innings. Meanwhile, the Cubs didn’t show much after a four-game sweep of the Mets at Citi Field as Chicago entered Tuesday’s action with a 7-1 record in the previous eight contests.

Aaron Nola heads to the mound for Philadelphia looking to keep his solid season going. The right-hander has put together an impressive 7-2 mark to go along with a 2.18 ERA, while the Phillies own a 7-1 record in his past eight trips to the hill. Nola has limited opponents to one run or less in five of his last six starts, while most recently cashing as a +150 road underdog against the Dodgers last Thursday in a 2-1 victory.

Jose Quintana counters for Chicago, as the southpaw is seeking consistency after tossing six scoreless innings in a 5-1 victory over the Mets last Thursday. Quintana has not delivered consecutive quality outings this season, while allowing 10 runs in his past two home starts against the Giants and Braves, both losses as a heavy favorite. The Cubs have done a solid job of bouncing back off a loss recently by going 6-1 in their last seven off a defeat since mid-May.

Betcha didn’t know: Since Sonny Gray was traded to the Yankees from Oakland last August, the right-hander has been the model of inconsistency in pinstripes. New York owns an 0-8 record when Gray takes the mound after the Yankees won in his previous outing. The Yankees are in this situation on Wednesday against the Blue Jays as New York won at Baltimore last Friday with Gray tossing six innings in a 4-1 victory.

Biggest public favorite: Angels (-260) vs. Royals

Biggest public underdog: Pirates (+100) vs. Dodgers

Biggest line move: Blue Jays (+130 to +120) vs. Yankees

Finals shifts to Cleveland, Cavs down
    June 4, 2018

LeBron James is friends with Draymond Green, has worked out with Kevin Durant, speaks with great reverence for Stephen Curry and Steve Kerr.

They all do like each other.

And, to those watching the NBA Finals, that might be easy to forget at times.

Turns out, when the same franchises meet for the fourth consecutive year to decide the NBA championship, familiarity indeed does breed contempt. Tensions have been high at times in the first two games of this series, emotions have started to boil over on a couple of occasions, and that trend will likely be continuing until someone hoists the Larry O'Brien Trophy.

''Even with turnover from players, you have a continuity of management, continuity of culture in organizations,'' NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said. ''There's the institutional memory there of the wins and the losses. And so, I think it is very meaningful and when you have the same teams that are meeting for the fourth time, it's part of a larger storyline. It's not just a one-off game or a one-off series.''

Translated: Everyone should have seen this coming.

There was the dustup at the end of Game 1 when Cleveland's Tristan Thompson was angered by the Warriors' Shaun Livingston trying a jumper with the outcome already decided. There was Klay Thompson angered by the recklessness of J.R. Smith crashing into his leg early in the series opener. There was Kendrick Perkins jawing at Stephen Curry after the third quarter of Game 2.

The Warriors and the Cavaliers are certainly not lacking for intensity in these finals.

''Much ado about nothing,'' Curry said Sunday night, likely not the most completely honest statement of his career since it couldn't have been just a coincidence that he made all five of his 3-pointers in the next 8:33 to turn the game into a blowout.

Game 3 is in Cleveland on Wednesday night, with the Warriors up 2-0. Emotions will simmer until then.

''It's just basketball,'' Tristan Thompson said. ''It's just a competitive sport. Of course we're going to get irritated with each other, just because we're both competitors and we both want it all. But it never goes off the court. Maybe for some guys it does, but not for me.''

Rivalries are what make the sport great.

There was the Celtics-Lakers hatred of eras gone past. Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls and the Detroit Pistons otherwise known as the Bad Boys. Pat Riley, back in the day, used to forbid his Knicks and Heat teams from helping up opponents when they knocked them over and discouraged fraternizing with the enemy - ever, including the offseason.

Times have changed. Guys vacation together now. It's a new era.

''We're not holding hands and singing songs as friends,'' Curry said. ''We're enjoying the competitive environment. I think that's the consistent thing between our two teams. Obviously we see each other twice a year during the regular season and then you wait until June. ... It's just about winning a championship. You don't want to let anything distract us from that on the floor.''

Sometimes, the ribbing goes off the court.

James raised eyebrows when he showed up with a suit jacket and matching shorts for Game 1, then arrived at Game 2 with a similar look. Never missing a chance to get under someone's collar, Green showed up at Game 2 also in the jacket-shorts mode.

    ''Fun,'' Green said.

There's basketball beefs, and then there's real-world beefs. Someone tried to get Green to draw a parallel between the Warriors-Cavs animus and the recent musical rivalry between Pusha T and Drake.

    He didn't bite.

''This is nothing like that, nothing at all like that,'' Green said.

Everything is fun for the Warriors right now, since they've won the first two games. Understandably, not much seems like fun to the Cavaliers. But no matter how this series ends, whenever it ends, there will be hugs and handshakes.

Until then, it's just all part of the game.

That's why things, while often heated, never seem to get overheated.

''They're a championship team, we're a championship team, and we both have experience,'' the Warriors' Kevon Looney said. ''So it's going to get a little chippy out there.''

The commissioner is fine with that, provided things stay within reason.

''The game ends, they take their proverbial cold shower and then they put it behind them,'' Silver said. ''Until the next game.''

Warriors chase third title in 4 years
    June 4, 2018

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Stephen Curry and coach Steve Kerr's Golden State Warriors have repeatedly said they want to build something special for the long haul, to compete for championships year after year.

LeBron James considers his familiar NBA Finals opponent among the best teams ever.

Where the Warriors stack up if they win a third championship in four years will make for a dynasty debate. And their domination doesn't appear to be ending anytime soon, so if they keep winning Golden State will have its place in history.

''As a fan of the NBA, you could go down the list of the teams that won multiple years and just dominated the league for stretches of time,'' Curry said.

The Warriors are trying to join Bill Russell's Celtics, the Bulls led by Michael Jordan and the Lakers' trio of title runs fueled by George Mikan in the 1950s, Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the `80s, and Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant nearly 20 years ago as the only franchises in NBA history to capture three championships in four years.

The Warriors are halfway there, holding a 2-0 lead against the underdog Cavs as the series shifts to Cleveland for Game 3 on Wednesday.

''Listen, Golden State is one of the best teams I've ever played. It's one of the best teams that's ever been assembled,'' said James, who is playing in his eighth straight NBA Finals and fourth in a row against Golden State.

Curry, sharp-shooting Klay Thompson, fiery Draymond Green and 2015 Finals MVP Andre Iguodala make up an All-Star-studded squad trying to repeat after James thwarted that quest two years ago when the Cavs stopped the defending champs. Kevin Durant bolted from Oklahoma City to join the cast last season.

''You look at it, they've got four Hall of Famers on their team in Klay, Dray, Steph and KD. They've got a Finals MVP that comes off their bench,'' James said in reference to Iguodala. ''... I don't know where they will fall in my book, but they will have a nice chapter.''

Not everybody is ready to crown the Warriors as a dynasty, not just yet anyway. Not even if they win the title this year.

''I don't like to go dynasty stuff, they've been the team of the decade,'' said Gary Payton, the longtime Seattle SuperSonics point guard who played 17 seasons through 2007. ''That's what it is. They've been doing their thing. When we get into a dynasty is Michael Jordan and them winning six, that's a dynasty. The Golden State Warriors (would have) won three out of four, that's great.

''It's coming to be a dynasty. If you win a couple more, then you're talking about a dynasty. So three of them is in the right stage and the right movement to becoming a dynasty, yes.''

The defending champions are playing in a fourth straight finals chasing a repeat they couldn't pull off in 2016 after capturing the franchise's first title in 40 years during 2014-15 with Kerr as a rookie head coach.

TNT analyst and former player Charles Barkley wants nothing to do with dynasty talk regarding the Warriors.

''We don't have any dynasties. It's been a long time since we've had a dynasty,'' Barkley said. ''The Bulls won six, the Spurs won five. We've had a lot of really good teams. I think the only dynasty is the Spurs. They've been great for 20 years. The Warriors are not going to win. Winning two in four years is not a dynasty.''

Golden State would love nothing more than to continue building momentum as the franchise approaches the opening of its new San Francisco arena, Chase Center , in summer 2019 if all remains on schedule. That leaves one last season at Oracle Arena.

B.J. Armstrong earned titles alongside Jordan with the Bulls from 1991-93. If the Warriors win another, they will join dynasty status in Armstrong's mind.

''They're right there,'' Armstrong said. ''For them to have a sustained level of excellence like they've had, I don't take that for granted and I think anyone who's played or observed this game knows how difficult that is for one, let alone to be able to get here four times and have an opportunity to win three speaks for itself. ...

''If they win this one, they're right up there with all of the teams for a dynasty-type caliber situation up here in Golden State.''

Curry was around for all the losing: 26 wins his rookie season of 2009-10, 23 two years later then gradually building to more victories each season thereafter.

He is proud to be part of a transformation - one the two-time MVP hopes they contend for titles for years to come.

''What we've been able to do here ... kind of taking a small step every year until 2015, winning our first championship, it is a sense of pride around that,'' Curry said. ''Being the elder statesman here and seeing what has all gone into being on this stage every single year - when it comes to the guys that I get to suit up with every single night, from Bob Myers down to the coaching staff to the ownership - it's just a transformation that I got to see firsthand and all the details that went into it.

''So at some point, when this is all said and done, I hope to kind of just sit back and really truly appreciate, from start to finish, all that went into it. But there is an awareness of where we were to where we are. And I appreciate it.''

    Preview: Warriors at Cavaliers
    Gracenote
    Jun 5, 2018

The Cleveland Cavaliers badly need a victory if they plan on turning the NBA Finals into a true series. The Golden State Warriors won the first two games of the best-of-seven series and look to place Cleveland in a major hole when they visit the Cavaliers on Wednesday.

Cleveland forward LeBron James averaged 40 points in the first two games - including his epic 51-point outing in the opener - and it still wasn't enough to get his squad a victory. "I don't like the way I feel, the mood I'm in right now," James told reporters at his Tuesday media availability. "When you're down like this, a deficit like this against a team like this, there's no good feeling. I personally don't feel good today about the deficit we have. I feel great about (Wednesday), the opportunity we have." Warriors guard Stephen Curry made an NBA Finals-record nine 3-pointers in Game 2 and is averaging 31 points in the series but he said his team has a lot of work still to do. "We understand how hard it is to win in this building," Curry told reporters. "No matter what's gone on in the series, when you change venues, you've got to reassert your dominance and try to find that right momentum to start. We have a great opportunity (Wednesday) to do that."

    TV: 9 p.m. ET, ABC

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Swingman Andre Iguodala (left knee) was termed questionable for Game 3 and it will be decided Wednesday whether or not he plays for the first since May 20. "He's doing better," Golden State coach Steve Kerr said at his Tuesday press conference. "He told me he's feeling better, so I would upgrade him to questionable. But I think he's getting closer, and I'm hopeful that he can play." Meanwhile, forward Kevin Durant is getting it done on the offensive end with back-to-back 26-point outings and he has topped 20 points in all 19 postseason games.

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS: Playoff disappointment Rodney Hood will receive some minutes in Game 3 as Cleveland searches for anybody who can provide scoring punch to complement James and power forward Kevin Love. Hood was acquired from Utah Jazz in February and hasn't fit in and is averaging just 4.4 points in the postseason but coach Tyronn Lue said "we're going to give Rodney a chance" and Hood proclaims he is ready. "I don't know when it's going to come or what stage of the game, but just being ready," Hood, who has played just four minutes in the series, told reporters. "I've been preparing, I've been working hard, so if I get the opportunity, just go out there and play. Just have fun."

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. The Warriors averaged 123 points while winning the first two games.

    2. Golden State G Shaun Livingston has made all nine of his field-goal attempts in the series and C JaVale McGee is 8-of-9 shooting.

    3. Love is averaging 21.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in the series.

    PREDICTION: Cavaliers 114, Warriors 113

    MLB | A's vs Rangers
    Play on: Rangers +120

    Free pick on Rangers +

We cashed with Texas as a big home dog with our free pick on Tuesday and will fire right back with the Rangers as a home dog on Wednesday. Oakland is simply getting way to much respect on the road in this one.

The A's do have one of their better starters on the mound in Daniel Mengden, who is 6-4 with a 2.91 ERA and 0.969 WHIP in 12 starts. However, Mengden hasn't been nearly as dominate on the road as he has at home. He's got a 3.54 ERA and 1.230 WHIP in 4 road starts. Mengden has also had a horrible time against division opponents. He's 0-4 with a 6.30 ERA and 1.350 WHIP in 4 starts against the AL West this season. The A's have lost 12 of his last 14 starts against division opponents.

Texas will counter with Bartolo Colon, who is coming off a poor outing at LA against the Angels, where he allowed 6 runs on 8 hits in just 3 innings. Colon is going to have outings like that at his age (45), but he can fire right back with a strong outing. He allowed 6 runs in 5 innings against the Yankees on 5/21 and in his very next start allowed 3 runs on just 5 hits in 7 innings at home against KC. Note he faced the A's once already this season and allowed just 1 run on 6 innings. Take Texas!
