    Preview: Mets at Braves
    Gracenote
    Jun 13, 2018

The Atlanta Braves have held at least a share of first place in the National League East for all but two days since May 2, and they’ll try to stay there when they host the New York Mets for the finale of a two-game series Wednesday. The Braves began a 14-game stretch against teams with losing records with Tuesday’s 8-2 rout of the Mets, improving to 8-3 against New York this season.

The latest win over the Mets put the Braves back atop the division standings after spending four days tied for the lead with Washington. Freddie Freeman and Ozzie Albies both homered for the Braves in the opener and continue to swing hot bats against New York as Albies owns three homers against the Mets and Freeman is batting .405 with nine RBIs versus New York this season. The Mets have dropped nine of their last 10 and 14 of 17. New York has scored 10 runs in its last eight games, batting .138 as a team over that stretch.

TV: 12:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, SNY (New York), FS Southeast (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jacob deGrom (4-1, 1.57 ERA) vs. Braves RH Mike Soroka (1-1, 3.68)

Coming off his first loss of the season, deGrom looks to extend his streak of five consecutive quality starts. The 29-year-old hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in his last nine outings and racked up at least eight strikeouts in his last five starts. In 14 starts against the Braves, deGrom is 5-3 with a 1.84 ERA, and he has allowed one run in 18 innings across three meetings this season.

Soroka will come off the disabled list to make his fourth big-league start and his first since May 12 at Miami. The 20-year-old beat the Mets in his debut May 1, allowing one run and six hits over six innings, but he didn’t get through five innings in his last two outings. Soroka has compiled 15 strikeouts and just four walks in 14 2/3 innings across his first three major league starts.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Freeman is 11-for-23 with four homers during a six-game hitting streak.

    2. Mets INF Wilmer Flores (back soreness) began a rehab assignment Tuesday at Class A St. Lucie and is expected to return at some point during the team’s 10-game road trip that began Tuesday.

    3. Albies, who leads the Braves with 16 home runs, is the second Atlanta second baseman with two grand slams in a season - joining Davey Johnson in 1973.

    PREDICTION: Mets 3, Braves 2

    Preview: Blue Jays at Rays
    Gracenote
    Jun 13, 2018

After ending a streak of three consecutive series losses, the Tampa Bay Rays can complete a three-game sweep of the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday afternoon. With its starting rotation ravaged by injuries, Tampa Bay used six relievers to stymie the Blue Jays in Tuesday's 4-1 victory and will hope to utilize the same formula in the series finale.

Wilson Ramos provided the Rays with all the runs they needed, swatting a two-run homer to extend his hitting streak to five games. Joey Wendle and Mallex Smith delivered RBI singles for Tampa Bay, which after Wednesday will play 14 of its next 16 games against the New York Yankees and Houston. Toronto amassed 56 hits in a four-game sweep of Baltimore before dropping the first two against the Rays, who managed only five singles in Tuesday's defeat. First baseman Justin Smoak was hitless in three at-bats and is 0-for-16 over the last five games.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), FS Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH J.A. Happ (8-3, 3.71 ERA) vs. Rays RH Wilmer Font (0-3, 9.59)

Happ improved to 4-0 in his last five outings with another strong effort versus Baltimore, allowing one unearned run on two hits over seven innings. It was the sixth quality start in the last nine turns for the 35-year-old, who is 3-1 with a 2.97 ERA in five outings away from home. Matt Duffy is 5-for-10 with a homer and three RBIs against Happ, who has struggled in 15 appearances versus Tampa Bay with a 3-4 record and 5.05 ERA.

After ugly stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland Athletics this season, Font is finding a home with the Rays, sporting a 3.24 ERA in his five appearances. He served as the opener last time out in his first outing at Tropicana Park on Friday versus Seattle and took the loss after striking out a season-high five and giving up two runs and two hits in 2 1/3 innings. Matt Andriese is expected to follow Font to the mound.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Rays RHP Chris Archer (abdominal strain) could remain sidelined through the All-Star break.

    2. Blue Jays RHP Marcus Stroman (shoulder) is scheduled for a rehab start at Class A Dunedin on Wednesday night.

    3. The Rays signed LH Matt Liberatore, their first-round pick in this month's draft.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 4, Rays 2

    Preview: Cubs at Brewers
    Gracenote
    Jun 13, 2018

The Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers have leap-frogged one another in the National League Central standings after each of the first two contests of their three-game series. The visiting Cubs hope to swap places again after Wednesday’s series finale.

The Brewers reclaimed a half-game lead over Chicago atop the division standings with a 4-0 win Tuesday, snapping a seven-game skid against the Cubs. The win was just Milwaukee’s second in 10 meetings this season, and it marked only the second time the Brewers scored more than two runs in the season series. The Cubs are trying to win their sixth consecutive series and avoid their first series loss on the road since a three-game sweep at St. Louis from May 4-6. Milwaukee hasn’t dropped a series at home since losing two of three to visiting Pittsburgh that same weekend.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Mike Montgomery (2-1, 3.56 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Jhoulys Chacin (5-1, 3.58)

Montgomery is making a strong case to stay in the rotation even when Yu Darvish returns from the disabled list. The 28-year-old has won two of his three starts, allowing two runs over 17 2/3 innings, and is coming off a win against Pittsburgh in which he gave up one run and seven hits across six frames. Montgomery hasn’t fared well against the Brewers as he is 1-5 with a 6.04 ERA in 13 games (four starts) versus Milwaukee.

The Brewers are 11-3 when Chacin starts this season, and he hasn’t taken a loss since April 4 against St. Louis. The 30-year-old benefited from strong run support last time out, earning the win despite allowing four runs over 6 1/3 innings in a 12-4 victory. Chacin is 2-4 with a 3.82 ERA in seven games (six starts) against the Cubs.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. The Cubs failed to record an extra-base hit Tuesday, snapping a streak of 96 consecutive games with at least one - the club’s longest streak since at least 1908.

    2. Brewers OF Christian Yelich is 11-for-30 during a seven-game hitting streak.

    3. Milwaukee 3B Travis Shaw was 2-for-27 against the Cubs this season before going 2-for-3 and driving in all four runs Tuesday.

    PREDICTION: Cubs 5, Brewers 3

    Preview: Red Sox at Orioles
    Gracenote
    Jun 13, 2018

The Boston Red Sox will have a decided advantage on the mound in their quest to finish off a three-game sweep at the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday. Star lefty Chris Sale, who limited the Orioles to two hits while striking out eight in five innings earlier in the year, goes for the Red Sox as they aim for an eighth consecutive victory at Camden Yards.

Baltimore originally planned to start veteran Andrew Cashner but he was placed on the 10-day disabled list prior to Tuesday's game with back soreness, forcing the club to turn to Yefry Ramirez for his major-league debut opposite Sale. Andrew Benintendi homered and forced in a run with a walk to help Boston pick up a 6-4 victory Tuesday night, giving the club a 23-11 record both at home and on the road. Mookie Betts, the top vote-getter in current All-Star balloting, returned from an abdominal strain in the series opener before sitting out the second game, but is expected to return for this one. The Orioles got Manny Machado back Tuesday from a one-game absence but they left 13 runners on base while losing a sixth consecutive game.

TV: 3:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NESN (Boston), MASN2 (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Chris Sale (5-4, 2.83 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Yefry Ramirez (NR)

Sale has lost three straight starts but he was solid in the most recent one, tossing eight innings of one-run ball while striking out 10 in a 1-0 loss to the Chicago White Sox. He has a 2.68 ERA in eight road starts while limiting opponents to a .188 average. The six-time All-Star is 4-1 with a 2.29 ERA in nine career games (six starts) at Camden Yards but will need to be careful with Machado, who is 6-for-16 with a home run and two doubles against Sale.

Ramirez is 3-4 with a 4.33 ERA in 12 starts for Triple-A Norfolk, recording 63 strikeouts and allowing 53 hits in 60 1/3 innings. The 24-year-old was with Baltimore for one day in April but did not appear in a game. He is 38-30 with a 3.55 mark in seven seasons in the minors, going 15-3 at the Double-A level last year while splitting the season between the New York Yankees and Baltimore systems.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Benintendi is batting .412 with three homers and 13 RBIs in nine games against Baltimore this year.

    2. Orioles LHP Zach Britton, who had 135 saves over the previous four years, made his season debut Tuesday after recovering from Achilles surgery.

    3. The Red Sox drew a season-high 10 walks Tuesday.

    Preview: Pirates at Diamondbacks
    Gracenote
    Jun 13, 2018

The Arizona Diamondbacks hope to continue their torrid offensive pace as they vie for their sixth straight win when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday for the finale of their three-game series. Arizona outslugged Pittsburgh 13-8 on Tuesday for its season-high fifth consecutive victory as it improved to 2-0 on its seven-game homestand.

Jon Jay recorded three hits - including a three-run homer after going 0-for-12 over his first four games since being acquired from Kansas City - and scored three times while Ketel Marte also collected three RBIs for the Diamondbacks, who held a 6-0 lead after one inning but nearly squandered it. Arizona has been scoring at a frenzied pace during its winning streak, crossing the plate at least eight times in each triumph. Pittsburgh registered a six-run frame of its own but was unable to come all the way back as it suffered its eighth loss in 10 contests. Josh Harrison and Josh Bell each recorded three hits and an RBI while Starling Marte launched a three-run homer as he improved to 4-for-10 with five RBIs over the first two games of the series.

TV: 3:40 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh, FS Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (3-5, 4.08 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Zack Greinke (5-4, 3.53)

Taillon suffered his fifth loss in six decisions on Thursday after giving up three runs and eight hits over five innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 26-year-old Floridian's ERA rose back over four after he lowered it to 3.97 by working eight scoreless frames in a victory at St. Louis on June 1. Taillon will be facing Arizona for the first time in his career.

Greinke came away with the win at Colorado on Friday despite yielding four runs and eight hits - two homers - in 5 2/3 innings. The 34-year-old native of the Sunshine State has been superb at home this season, going 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA and 0.86 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .198 batting average in seven turns. Greinke owns a 7-3 record and 4.59 ERA in 11 career starts against the Pirates.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (jaw) hopes to be in the lineup Wednesday after missing three straight games.

    2. Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt has gone 19-for-33 during his eight-game hitting streak, scoring 12 runs in that span.

    3. Pittsburgh has lost 18 of its last 24 contests and each of its last eight series.

    Preview: Angels at Mariners
    Gracenote
    Jun 13, 2018

The Seattle Mariners are a season-high 19 games above .500, and their next quest is completing a three-game sweep of the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday afternoon. Seattle belted seven homers while winning the first two games of the series and has prevailed in 10 of its last 12 contests.

Ryon Healy has launched three homers in the series after going deep twice in Tuesday's 6-3 victory while Mitch Haniger also hit two blasts in the latest win. Los Angeles star Mike Trout has belted two homers in each of the first two games of the series and is 14-for-22 with five shots against the Mariners this season. Trout's 12th career multi-homer performance was his fourth at Safeco Field - a record for a visiting player - and increased his major league-leading total to 23 blasts. Seattle slugger Nelson Cruz hit a two-run homer in the series opener as the teams have combined for 12 shots over the first two games.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, Facebook Watch

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Garrett Richards (4-4, 3.26 ERA) vs. Mariners LH Marco Gonzales (7-3, 3.28)

Richards is 0-3 over his last six turns despite posting a solid 2.53 ERA during the stretch. The 30-year-old last emerged victorious when he scattered four hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Mariners on May 4 to improve to 6-4 with a 2.91 ERA in 19 career appearances (11 starts) versus the club. Richards settled for a no-decision against Minnesota in his last turn after giving up two runs and six hits over 5 1/3 frames.

Gonzales, who is looking to win his fifth consecutive start, has posted a stellar 0.81 ERA over his last five turns. The 26-year-old has allowed just 21 hits in 33 1/3 innings during a stretch that has established him as a solid member of the rotation. Gonzalez escaped with a no-decision against the Angels on May 5, when he yielded four runs and nine hits over six frames, and has registered a 4.40 ERA in three career starts versus Los Angeles.

    WALK-OFFS

    Preview: Rockies at Phillies
    Gracenote
    Jun 13, 2018

Scott Kingery has been shuffled around the field this season as the Philadelphia Phillies try to find a home for the promising prospect. The 24-year-old looks to follow up a season high-tying four-RBI performance on Wednesday as the Phillies (34-30) bid for a series victory versus the reeling Colorado Rockies (32-34), who have dropped a season-worst five straight and nine of 11.

Kingery belted a three-run homer for his first blast since April 10 as Philadelphia claimed an early lead and held on for their second straight win with a 5-4 triumph on Tuesday. Cesar Hernandez has hit safely in four consecutive contests and scored a run in three straight and six of his last seven for the Phillies, who evened their six-game homestand at 2-2 and improved to 21-11 at Citizens Bank Park this season. Trevor Story had two singles to record his fourth straight multi-hit performance on Tuesday and crossed the plate twice in the opener to give him six runs scored during his six-game hitting streak. Story will get his first look at right-hander Nick Pivetta while left-hander Tyler Anderson will get the nod for the Rockies.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountains (Colorado), NBCS Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies LH Tyler Anderson (3-1, 4.81 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Nick Pivetta (4-5, 3.76)

Anderson recorded his fourth straight no-decision on Thursday despite working a season high-tying seven innings against Cincinnati. The 28-year-old allowed just two runs on five hits versus the Reds and kept the ball in the park after being taken deep eight times in his previous six outings. Hernandez (6-for-9) and Maikel Franco (3-for-7) have gotten their licks in on Anderson, although the left-hander has flustered both Aaron Altherr (0-for-5, three strikeouts) and Odubel Herrera (0-for-3, three strikeouts).

Pivetta has answered a three-start winning streak with three straight losses after permitting four runs on six hits in five frames in Thursday's 4-3 setback versus the Chicago Cubs. The 25-year-old British Columbia native has yielded nine earned runs over 14 innings while allowing the opposition to bat .294 against him during his losing skid. Pivetta was torched in his lone appearance against Colorado, yielding eight runs on as many hits in 2 2/3 innings at Coors Field on Aug. 5.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Colorado LF Gerardo Parra has recorded five multi-hit performances in his last eight games.

    2. Philadelphia 1B Carlos Santana has gone 0-for-5 -- albeit with three walks -- in his last two contests on the heels on a seven-game hitting streak.

    3. Rockies C Tom Murphy excelled in his major-league debut with three hits on Tuesday after batting .289 with 16 homers in 49 games with Triple-A Albuquerque to open the season.

    PREDICTION: Rockies 3, Phillies 2

    Preview: Nationals at Yankees
    Gracenote
    Jun 13, 2018

The New York Yankees have relieved heavily on homers of late, with 20 of their last 22 runs scored courtesy of the long ball. After Didi Gregorius recorded his third multi-homer performance of the season in the opener, the Yankees (43-19) vie for a sweep of the abbreviated two-game interleague series versus the visiting Washington Nationals (36-28) on Wednesday.

Gregorius is batting .313 over his last 12 games after belting a pair of solo homers in Tuesday's 3-0 triumph for New York, which has won 10 of 12 overall and 18 of its last 22 at home. The Yankees' bullpen pushed its scoreless innings streak to 21 2/3 innings with 3 1/3 spotless frames in the opener, lowering its ERA to a majors-best 0.63 in 42 2/3 innings over the last 14 games. New York's fourth shutout this season resulted in the second time in as many games that Washington has been blanked, with the latter collecting just eight hits in the process. Manager Dave Martinez said Bryce Harper is expected to be fine after the 2015 National League Most Valuable Player was hit in the elbow and foot by a pair of pitches in Tuesday's tilt.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, MASN (Washington), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Erick Fedde (0-1, 4.76 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Sonny Gray (4-4, 4.81)

Multiple media outlets reported that Fedde is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to replace fellow right-hander Stephen Strasburg, who was shuffled to the disabled list on Sunday with an ailing shoulder. The 25-year-old allowed three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss against San Diego on May 23 in his lone spot start with the Nationals. Fedde has a 3-2 mark with a 4.76 ERA in 56 2/3 innings with Syracuse this season.

Gray was saddled with a no-decision on Wednesday despite retiring the first 12 batters he faced while scattering two hits and striking out eight over eight scoreless innings against Toronto. The 28-year-old has recorded quality starts in three of his last four trips to the mound. Gray has limited the current crop of Nationals to just a .219 batting average against him, although the hurler has yet to pick up a decision in two career starts versus the club.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. New York manager Aaron Boone said slumping C Gary Sanchez, who is mired in a 4-for-53 stretch with 18 strikeouts, is expected to sit out his second straight game on Wednesday.

    2. Washington CF Adam Eaton has hit safely in both games since being activated from the 60-day disabled list.

    3. The Yankees are expected to call up Jonathan Loaisiga to replace fellow RHP Masahiro Tanaka to start either Thursday or Friday's game against Tampa Bay.

    PREDICTION: Yankees 4, Nationals 2

    Preview: Twins at Tigers
    Gracenote
    Jun 13, 2018

The Detroit Tigers went nearly the entire month of May without Miguel Cabrera earlier and now will be without their slugging first baseman for the remainder of the season. Cabrera ruptured a tendon in his biceps in Tuesday's 6-4 loss to Minnesota and will undergo season-ending surgery, leaving Detroit scrambling as it resumes the three-game set versus the Twins on Wednesday.

Cabrera was hurt when he took an awkward swing at an offspeed pitch and immediately grabbed his arm, but the severity of the injury wasn't revealed until after he was sent for an MRI exam. "It's a very sad day for our baseball team," Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He's a special player and a special person to have around here. It's a blow. I feel terrible for him." Minnesota vaulted past Detroit into second place in the American League Central as Ehire Adrianza belted a grand slam as part of a three-hit game in the series opener. Jose Berrios owns a 3-1 record against the Tigers despite an 8.49 ERA, but he beat them with eight strong innings on May 21, allowing two runs on three hits.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), FS Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH José Berríos (7-5, 3.66 ERA) vs. Tigers LH Matthew Boyd (4-4, 3.20)

Berrios tossed his second complete game of the year and his first since his season debut, striking out 10 and limiting the Chicago White Sox to two runs and six hits to improve to 4-1 over his last five starts. The 24-year-old has racked up 44 strikeouts over his last five starts, including nine in the victory over Detroit last month. Nicholas Castellanos is 5-for-10 with a homer and four RBIs off Berrios.

Boyd posted his first road victory of the season at Boston in his last outing, limiting the Red Sox to two runs and four hits over 6 1/3 innings. The 27-year-old had his second shortest outing of the season at Minnesota in a 6-0 loss on May 17, permitting only one hit while allowing two runs and walking four. Brian Dozier has been a nemesis for Boyd, going 13-for-32 with three homers, three doubles and five RBIs.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Adrianza is 9-for-20 with two homers, seven RBIs and seven runs scored in his last seven games.

    2. John Hicks, batting .285 with five homers and 22 RBIs, will take over as Detroit's starting first baseman.

    3. The Twins signed RH Matt Belisle one day after he was released by Cleveland.

    PREDICTION: Twins 4, Tigers 3

    Preview: Giants at Marlins
    Gracenote
    Jun 12, 2018

The Miami Marlins seek just their second three-game winning streak of the year when they continue a four-game series against the visiting San Francisco Giants on Wednesday. The Marlins have notched a pair of two-run wins to begin the set, riding a combined three-hitter to a 3-1 victory Tuesday night.

JT Riddle's two-run double in the third inning was the difference in the scoring column for Miami, which is 7-1 against the Giants over the last two years. Rookie Andrew Suarez gets the start Wednesday for San Francisco as he pitches in his hometown for the first time in his career. He will hope for a little more offensive support from a lineup that was held without an extra-base hit for the fifth time this year in Tuesday's loss. The Giants' bats will try to get things going against lefty Caleb Smith, who has held opponents to a .203 average in 2018.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco), FS Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants LH Andrew Suarez (2-4, 5.06 ERA) vs. Marlins LH Caleb Smith (5-6, 3.70)

Suarez has just one quality start over his past seven turns and lasted only 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision at Washington on Friday. He gave up four runs in that outing, which marked the fifth time in the last six appearances that the 25-year-old has been reached for at least four runs. Suarez has a 6.75 ERA and opponents are hitting .340 against him on the road.

Smith has three scoreless outings over his last eight starts, including a 5 1/3-inning effort against San Diego on Friday. That gave the Texas native a 3-1 record and an ERA of 2.74 over a span of four starts. Smith will be facing the Giants for the first time while trying to improve upon a 2.90 ERA in six home starts.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Marlins 3B/RF Brian Anderson is 4-for-7 with four runs scored in the series.

    2. Giants SS Brandon Crawford is 0-for-6 but owns two RBIs in the series and has driven in eight over his last eight games.

    3. Miami RHP Kyle Barraclough is unscored upon in 14 consecutive appearances (13 2/3 innings) while allowing only one hit.

    PREDICTION: Marlins 4, Giants 3

    Preview: Indians at White Sox
    Gracenote
    Jun 13, 2018

The Chicago White Sox put their home-run drought in the rear-view mirror and look to string together back-to-back wins when they host the American League Central-leading Cleveland Indians on Wednesday. The White Sox had gone six games without a homer before Yoan Moncada and Yolmer Sanchez went deep to lead off the first inning during Tuesday’s 5-1 victory.

Chicago ended May by losing three straight at Cleveland but has gone 7-5 this month to climb out of last place in the AL Central with the help of a pitching staff that has posted a 2.74 ERA over the last 12 contests. Dylan Covey hopes to continue that solid stretch when he takes the mound for the White Sox in the third contest of the four-game series while the Indians counter with Trevor Bauer, who owns a 2.17 ERA in seven road starts. Cleveland, which has a comfortable five-game lead in the division, lost for just the second time in seven contests Tuesday as it managed just one hit in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position. Francisco Lindor recorded two hits in the setback and is 5-for-12 with three doubles and a walk over his last three contests for the Indians, who have won 17 of 24 against Chicago since the beginning of last season.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), NBCS Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Trevor Bauer (5-4, 2.62 ERA) vs. White Sox RH Dylan Covey (2-1, 2.22)

Bauer limited Detroit to one run on seven hits and one walk while reaching double figures in strikeouts (12) for the third straight outing last time out. The 27-year-old UCLA product, who has yielded eight earned runs and registered 52 strikeouts over his last five starts, has served up just five homers in 13 outings - two in the last seven turns. Jose Abreu is 10-for-34 with a pair of doubles versus Bauer, who is 6-2 with a 3.55 ERA against Chicago in his career.

Covey has not permitted an earned run in his last two starts after giving up five runs - two earned - over 4 1/3 innings at Cleveland on May 28. The 26-year-old Californian has allowed one unearned run on seven hits and four walks with 14 strikeouts across 11 frames in his last two outings. Yonder Alonso has recorded a double in two at-bats against Covey, who has been much better at home (3.76 ERA) than on the road (7.80) while in the major leagues.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Cleveland OF Lonnie Chisenhall is 9-for-27 with three RBIs in seven contests since coming off the disabled list.

    2. Abreu is just 0-for-8 in the series but has notched 20 of his 25 doubles in the last 33 games.

    3. Indians 3B Jose Ramirez owns a four-game hitting streak but has hit just one homer in 10 contests this month after belting 11 in May.

    Preview: Reds at Royals
    Gracenote
    Jun 13, 2018

Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto isn’t a fan of the designated hitter, but he could fill the role again Wednesday when the Reds face the host Kansas City Royals in the finale of a two-game interleague series. Batting third and serving as the designated hitter Tuesday, Votto delivered a bases-loaded triple in the 10th inning to help the Reds secure a 5-1 victory.

The brief series between a pair of last-place teams opened with a pitchers’ duel as the Reds’ Sal Romano and the Royals’ Ian Kennedy each threw eight strong innings. The Reds forced extra innings when Tucker Barnhart homered off Kelvin Herrera to lead off the ninth inning for Herrera's second blown save in 16 opportunities. Eugenio Suarez added an RBI single in the 10th for the Reds, who are looking to win three straight games for the first time since May 13, when they won four in a row. Kansas City lost for the eighth time in its last 11 games Tuesday while being held to four hits, including a solo homer by rookie Hunter Dozier, and designated hitter Jorge Soler (bruised toe) returned to the lineup for the first time since Friday and went 0-for-4 with a strikeout.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Tyler Mahle (4-6, 4.33 ERA) vs. Royals RH Jason Hammel (2-6, 5.12)

Mahle received a no-decision against Colorado last Thursday, when he allowed three runs (two earned) with six strikeouts across five innings. The 23-year-old native Californian has struggled to pitch deep into games, tossing exactly five innings in five of his 13 starts. Set to make his first career appearance against Kansas City, Mahle has issued a total of 34 hits and 15 walks over his last six starts covering 29 1/3 innings.

Hammel took the loss against Oakland last Thursday after allowing four runs in six innings, but manager Ned Yost was encouraged by the outing. “I thought Hammel threw great. One of the best performances I've seen him throw since we've had him,” Yost told reporters. “Even the pitches he got hurt on, he was really, really good.” Hammel is 4-1 with a 3.42 ERA in 12 career games (11 starts) against Cincinnati, including a 0.75 ERA during an active four-game winning streak.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Kansas City OF Jorge Bonifacio, who is finishing an 80-game PED suspension, will begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Omaha.

    2. The Reds are 21-28 under interim manager Jim Riggleman.

    3. The Royals activated Justin Grimm from the 10-day disabled list and optioned fellow RHP Trevor Oaks to Triple-A Omaha.

    PREDICTION: Royals 6, Reds 3

    Preview: Padres at Cardinals
    Gracenote
    Jun 13, 2018

The San Diego Padres surprisingly are just five games under .500 as they try to win their three-game series against the host St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. The Padres posted a 4-2 victory in Tuesday's middle contest and have won 10 of their last 14 contests.

Eric Hosmer homered for the second time in three games for San Diego and is batting .310 this month. The real star of the Padres is closer Brad Hand, who is tied for the National League lead with 20 saves after tossing a perfect ninth inning on Tuesday and hasn't been scored upon in 11 of his last 12 appearances. Marcell Ozuna recorded a run-scoring single for St. Louis and is batting .390 with four homers and 12 RBIs this month. The hot-hitting Jose Martinez was hitless in three at-bats after belting five homers over his previous five games.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FS San Diego, FS Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Eric Lauer (2-4, 6.64 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Luke Weaver (3-5, 4.35)

Lauer lost to Miami in his last start as he gave up three runs on six hits and a season-high seven walks in five innings. The 23-year-old was roughed up by the Cardinals on May 11, when he surrendered six runs and seven hits - four homers - over 2 1/3 frames of a 9-5 loss. Lauer has worked five innings or fewer in seven of his nine starts.

Weaver is 2-0 with 12 scoreless innings in two career starts against the Padres, registering 14 strikeouts while allowing seven hits and two walks. The 24-year-old is winless (0-3) in five starts since defeating the Padres on May 11. Weaver came away without a decision against Cincinnati in his last turn as he gave up four runs on seven hits and a season-high five walks in five innings.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Cardinals INFs Paul DeJong and Jedd Gyorko and OFs Harrison Bader and Ozuna homered off Lauer at Petco Park in the May contest.

    2. St. Louis RHP Luke Gregerson (knee) underwent arthroscopic surgery and will miss four to six weeks.

    3. San Diego OF Franchy Cordero (forearm) is slated to start a rehab assignment at Triple-A El Paso on Thursday, while LHP Joey Lucchesi (hip) is scheduled to start at Single-A Lake Elsinore on the same night.

    PREDICTION: Cardinals 5, Padres 0
