Costa Rica vs Brazil 6/22/18 - World Cup Picks & Predictions

Costa Rica vs. Brazil

Soccer: 08:00 EST
Jun. 22, 2018
TV: Fox Sports 1
Latest Odds : BRA -1.75 Total: 2.75

Brazil suffered a punch in the mouth in their first match in this World Cup, when they were held to a draw against Switzerland. They will now look for their first win of the tournament when they will clash against Costa Rica on Friday. Costa Rica are also coming off a tough result, as they lost against Serbia in the first match.

Brazil looked really unprepared for the World Cup, as they were held to what seemed like an unexpected 1-1 draw against Switzerland. They actually took an early lead at the 20th minute when Coutinho scored a very strong shot. They were creating very few chances, and even those were not all on the opposing target. Switzerland eventually managed to pull even at the 50th minute with Zuber, and Brazil just didn’t have an answer for that goal.

Costa Rica must also be feeling bad about the outcome of their first match. They fought really hard in that match, and despite not recording a lot of scoring chances they feel like they deserved more. However, it was Serbia who scored the only goal of that match in the 58th minute. Kolarov scored a direct free kick that essentially doomed Costa Rica, who were unable to respond. Both Bolanos and Campbell are coming off injuries and were quite rusty off the bench.

Bonus Betting Pick: Brazil -1.75 (-117)

Brazil have had a great history against Costa Rica over the years, having won each of the four competitive matches they’ve played. They will be looking for a solid performance in order to avoid getting caught in elimination scenarios. Costa Rica have caused numerous upsets in the past and have a lot of quality up front. However, I feel that Brazil won’t stumble here.

Iceland vs Nigeria 6/22/18 - World Cup Picks & Predictions

Iceland vs. Nigeria

Soccer: 11:00 AM EST
Jun. 22, 2018
TV: Telemundo
Latest Odds : ICE +0.0 Total: 2

Nigeria feel like they deserved something more from that match against Croatia, where they ended up losing. They were actually pretty good and didn’t deserve such a bad loss. They will now have to get their heads back together, as they will clash against Iceland on Friday. Iceland are coming off a really solid performance against Argentina, as they managed to grab a point.

Nigeria were really good against Croatia, and despite the final 0-2 they didn’t deserve it at all. However, they were really unlucky at the 32nd minute when they scored an own goal. Their opponents were struggling to create chances in that span but got a lead out of the blue. Croatia were slightly better in the second half, where they doubled their lead with a penalty kick by Modric at the 71st minute. Nigeria will surely be feeling hard-done about that result and will look to get revenge against Iceland.

Iceland have been steadily improving in recent years. After a pretty successful run in the 2016 EURO Cup, Iceland made an excellent start in the World Cup too. They managed to hold Argentina to a 1-1 draw, and not because of luck, but because of hard work and grit. Argentina did make a great start in the match when Aguero scored a powerful shot at the 19th minute. However, Iceland managed to pull even just four minutes later with Finnbogason. Argentina took over in the second half, but despite their 15 scoring chances, only three were on target.

Bonus Betting Pick: Over 2 Goals (-126)

Nigeria showed some real physical strength and speed in the first match, but they didn’t put it into good use. They will now require a win here in order to keep their qualification hopes alive before clashing against Argentina in the final match. Iceland might be fairly new at this, but they are not to be taken lightly. This will be a physical match, but I expect the two teams to fight hard for the win.

Switzerland vs Serbia 6/22/18 - World Cup Picks & Predictions
Posted on 20 June 2018 by Paul

Switzerland vs. Serbia

Soccer: 14:00 EST
Jun. 22, 2018
TV: SiriusXM FC
Latest Odds : SER +0.0 Total: 2

Switzerland are one of the teams that caused upsets in the opening round of the World Cup, as they held Brazil to a draw. They were really good in their performance, and they will look to repeat that when they will play against Serbia on Friday. Serbia are also coming off a strong performance and a win against Costa Rica.

Serbia were not better than Costa Rica but managed to start the World Cup with a solid 0-1 win. It was actually a very balanced match between the two teams, with each team having 10 scoring chances each, but just 3 scoring chances. Serbia eventually scored the only goal of the match at the 56th minute, when Kolarov scored a goal from a direct free kick. They went on to hold their advantage till the end of the match and are now leading the group. Even a draw point would be welcome, but they play with Brazil in the final match and should have gathered all the points they could get.

Switzerland did a very solid job against Brazil, whom they held at a 1-1 draw. Even though they were left chasing the score at just the 20th minute, Switzerland managed to get back into the game. They pulled even at the 50th minute with Zuber but were really pressured in the second half. Even so, they kept their composure and held on to the result, effectively disarming Brazil’s outbursts. Switzerland will now welcome a win here, as it would give them great qualifying hopes.

Bonus Betting Pick: Over 2 Goals (-113)

Anything other than a win for Switzerland here might erase what they did against Brazil. They need to keep grabbing points, and they will be going for more than the draw here. Serbia know that they will play Brazil next, so they should have grabbed all points they can before that happens. Long story short, go with the Over 2 Goals in this “kill or be killed” match.

3-Unit Play. Take #366 Edmonton (-6.5) over Hamilton (10 p.m., Friday, June 22)

2-Unit Play. Take 'Over' 56.5 Hamilton at Edmonton (10 p.m., Friday,
June 22)

The Eskimos struggled to get a win in week one so they will need to put on a better show on both ends of the field in this one. Mike Reilly picked up where he left off last season with 408 passing yards and 43 rushing yards to lead the Eskimos to victory over Winnipeg. Reilly is a veteran and has been controlling games for years so this is no surprise and Hamilton should allow him to have another great game in this one. Hamilton hung around with Calgary last week but didn't have enough to keep the Stamps out of the endzone late. Their defense is suspect at best and with the Eskimos playing at home and Reilly slinging it all over the field this could be rough one for the Ti-Cats. Hamilton should score a few points making the over the play but they wont have enough to stay with Edmonton as they move to 2-0.

3-Unit Play. World Cup. Take Brazil -1.5 over Costa Rica (-126) (Friday @ 8am) (For this selection to win Brazil needs to win by 2 goals or more)
Whenever Brazil comes off a tie or a loss they are usually a very strong side the next game. This is a team that obviously needs a win here as they tied Iceland and have a good Swiss team on deck after this game. So, if they are to to win a game in this group and get their fair share of goals for a goal differential it has to be here and now against Costa Rica. So, at this point Brazil is not just thinking about winning but they are thinking about winning big. Costa Rica lost 0-2 to England, 1-4 to Belgium and 0-5 to Spain and Brazil is as every bit as good as those teams and this team can ill afford to do what Argentina did and fall out of contention especially after what happened in the last World Cup. We like Brazil to get it done over Costa Rica and get back on track and get back near the top of the division.

3-Unit Play. World Cup. Take Over 2 Goals (-103) Nigeria vs. Iceland (Friday @ 11am) (For this Selection to win 3 Goals must be scored)
If you are Nigeria and you just lost 0-2 to Croatia, goal difference is not something you can look forward to if you tie another team. You need to win. And, if you come off scoring 0 goals after scoring 0 goals against the Czech Republic, you will be highly motivated and a lot of pressure to open things up a little bit and score some goals here. Remember, Nigeria rarely goes scoreless in 3 straight International Contests. Plus, Iceland comes off a tie with Argentina but given that Croatia has already picked up 3 points, it is imperative, they pick up a win here which will take some goals. Iceland scored 2 on Ghana, 2 against Norway and 1 against Peru. Look for this to be a bit more loose here as there are more goals scored than most people will give credit for these two teams.

3-unit Play. #321. Competition: World Cup. Take Iceland Pick(-118) over Nigeria. (Friday @ 11:00 am est) (For this to Win, Iceland must Win by 1 or more goals, if this is a Draw, it is a Push, Regulation + Injury time).
At the end of the day, Iceland gets an opportunity to advance here in their first World Cup given the massive falter of Argentina losing 0-3 to Croatia. If Iceland gets a draw, then they would need to beat Croatia to advance or at least tie Croatia and have Nigeria tie Argentina (which is unlikely). So, Iceland has 1 chance here and that is to win and control their own destiny because if they do win, it will cancel out Argentina's win against Nigeria which is likely to happen and they can move on due to their goal differential even if they lose to Croatia. Iceland is one of the most focusd teams when it comes to winning and showing up to big games and frankly we have them about 20 spots better in the power rankings as well. Let's roll with the consistent and more steady gameplan here who have faced tougher competition all year in Iceland as they likely get it done. Iceland has had draws coming in their last two matches, 2-2 against Ghana and 1-1 in their first ever World Cup match against Argentina. Iceland have played 12 straight matches where the score line ended with 2 goals or more. Iceland's only other major tournament was the 2016 Euros where Iceland finished second in their group with two draws and one win in a group that included Portugal, Hungary, and Austria. Iceland won their first knockout round match 2-1 against England before losing to France 5-2 in the quarterfinals. All five-matches in the Euros ended with 2 or more goals. For Nigeria, they enter this match winless in their last five, drawing one and losing four with three losses in a row. Nigeria lost their opener 2-0 to Croatia and have played four of their last five matches ending with 2 goals or more. This is Nigeria's third World Cup in a row reaching the first knockout round in 2014 losing to Argentina 3-2. Three of Nigeria's World Cup matches in a row have ended with 2 or more goals and five of their last eight. This will be the first match between these two nations.

4 Unit Play. Take Iceland 'Pick -110' over Nigeria (11:00p.m., Friday, June 22 FOX) (Graded after regulation time - 90min - plus injury time - if game ends in a Draw we have a PUSH)
Nigeria is coming off a loss to Croatia 2-0 last Saturday and Friday early afternoon they have to play the tough Iceland squad who is coming off a 'Draw' against Messi and Argentina. Iceland team defense has been nothing but brilliant since Euro Cup and to hold Argentina to only one goal I see them holding Nigeria scoreless again in Russia. Friday I see Iceland grabbing the 3-points against the Super Eagles and again Iceland will steal the day in World Cup.

4-Unit Play. Take #9470 Brazil -1.5 -130 over Costa Rica (Friday, June 22nd at 8:00 AM ET)
Take Brazil -1.5 over Costa Rica as my 4-Unit World Cup Smash for Friday. This pick falls into one of my top World Cup systems and I expect Brazil to press a lot more offensively in this game after not doing so against Switzerland which cost them the win by allowing Switzerland back into the game after leading 1-0 at the half. There is zero doubt that Brazil is still one of the best teams in the World Cup and they will dominate ball possession against Costa Rica. I expect a much more focused Brazil team here Friday as they will not take Costa Rica lightly. Play Brazil -1.5

2-Unit Play. Take #302 Brazil (-2, +120) over Costa Rica (8 a.m., Friday, June 22)
3-Unit Play. Take #302 Brazil (-1.5, -135) over Costa Rica (8 a.m., Friday, June 22)
1-Unit Play. Take #302 Brazil (-420) over Costa Rica (8 a.m., Friday, June 22)

3-Unit Play. Take 'Over' 2.5 (-130) Brazil vs. Costa Rica (8 a.m., Friday, June 22)

Brazil is not happy. They are really, really not happy. And that means bad things for Costa Rica, a team that was already manhandled in their first match. First, lets talk about this Costa Rica team. They were a surprise quarterfinalist in Brazil in 2014. And they brought all the same guys - four years older - to Russia. But they aren't the same team. They are just primed and due to get lit up, and that's what has been happening over the past month, losing to Serbia in the opener following a 4-1 loss to Belgium and a 2-0 loss to England in June friendlies. Then there is Brazil. This is one of a half-dozen teams that has a real chance to win this tournament. They took a tough draw their first time out. And they took it on the heels of a lot of Swiss fouls, especially against their star player, Neymar. The Brazilian federation lodged a complaint about how that match was officiated. And the bottom line is that they left the field pissed off. And they are still pissed off. And that is bad - very, very bad - for Costa Rica. I think that this match will be at least 2-0 at halftime. And I think that Brazil will tack at least one on in the second half. Once they get up big Costa Rica will have no choice but to open up play (a loss and Costa Rica has zero chance to advance). Once Costa Rica opens things up and starts throwing guys forward that is just going to create a lot of opportunities for the Brazilians. I don't care if Neymar plays or not. Brazil is going to go nuts in this game and I will be surprised if this one is anything less than 4-1.

7-Unit Play. Take 'Over' 2.0 Iceland vs. Nigeria (11 a.m., Friday, June 22)

If you have never seen Iceland play then you really should. This is the smallest nation in the World Cup. And they play with that chip on their shoulder. This team just attacks, and attacks, and attacks. They are decent defensively. But Iceland is always looking to score on the counter and they are not just happy to be here. Iceland's first match absolutely should've gone over. Argentina should've cashed in that penalty kick to make it 2-1. They didn't. But the 1-1 score in that one didn't reflect the actual state of play there. Nigeria is not done. They could absolutely win this match and thrust themselves back in the middle of this group. This team is creative and inventive. And they are going to be on the prowl this whole game. Iceland won't be able to play possum here. Nigeria is going to give them too many chances. And Nigeria should be able to catch some opportunities on the counter, throwing Iceland's game back at them. The end result should be a wide-open game that leads to a lot of opportunities. Again, regardless of the result in the first match both of these teams should be playing for advancement here. If Argentina beats Croatia then Iceland can take the lead in this group with a win. Or Nigeria can win and then pull even with Croatia and Argentina. If Croatia beats Argentina then both of these teams will realize that a win and three points puts them in the pole position in second place. Bottom line is that both teams are going to be playing to win. And that should lead to an aggressive 90 minutes. I see at least three goals in this match - and maybe four - and I will take this one 'over'.

Preview: Athletics at White Sox (Game 1)
Gracenote
Jun 21, 2018

The Oakland Athletics have matched their season-best winning streak of four games as they enter a doubleheader with the host Chicago White Sox on Friday. While Oakland is enjoying a good run, the White Sox have equaled their longest slide of the campaign with seven straight losses entering the four-game series.

The teams are playing a doubleheader after Thursday's series opener was postponed by rain. The Athletics have scored 28 runs during their winning streak and put on an impressive power display by hitting five homers in Wednesday's 12-4 drubbing of San Diego. Chicago has allowed 41 runs during its skid and was hammered 24-5 by Cleveland in a three-game road set earlier this week. The seven-game losing streak is the third of the year for the White Sox, who are a season-worst 25 games below .500.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Oakland), NBCS Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics LH Sean Manaea (6-6, 3.56 ERA) vs. White Sox RH James Shields (2-8, 4.63)

Manaea defeated the Los Angeles Angels in his last turn after being winless in his previous five starts. The 26-year-old has served up at least one homer in each of his last nine turns and has allowed 14 blasts in 15 starts after giving up 18 in 29 outings last season. Manaea, who never has faced the White Sox, is 3-2 with a 3.48 ERA in seven road starts this year.

Shields has lost eight of his last nine decisions after winning his first start of the season. The 36-year-old has worked at least six innings in each of his last 11 outings and 13 of 15 overall. Shields lost in relief at Oakland earlier this season to fall to 6-7 with a 4.86 ERA in 19 career appearances (18 starts) against the Athletics.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Athletics scored 30 runs in a three-game home sweep of the White Sox in April.

2. Chicago SS Tim Anderson is batting .175 with 22 strikeouts this month.

3. Oakland DH Khris Davis (stomach illness) is expected back in the lineup after a one-game absence.

PREDICTION: Athletics 7, White Sox 5

Preview: Phillies at Nationals
Gracenote
Jun 22, 2018

Odubel Herrera and the Philadelphia Phillies look to continue their hot streaks when they visit the Washington Nationals for the opener of a three-game series Friday night in a battle for second place in the National League East. Herrera boasts multiple hits in five of his last seven games and has homered in four straight for the Phillies, who have won four of their last five contests.

Herrera, who is 9-for-17 in his last four outings, is just one of several Philadelphia regulars warming up as Rhys Hoskins is 9-for-21 during a five-game hitting streak and Cesar Hernandez has hit safely in six straight contests. Zach Eflin goes after his fourth consecutive win when he takes the mound for the Phillies against fellow right-hander Tanner Roark, who has given up five homers in his last four outings. Washington, who leads Philadelphia by one-half game in the NL East, avoided a series loss to major league-worst Baltimore with a 4-2 victory on Thursday - just its third triumph in the last 10 outings. Nationals rookie Juan Soto continues his standout season with a tie-breaking, two-run double in the eighth inning Thursday and has hit safely in five straight games with four walks in that span.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, NBC 10 (Philadelphia), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Zach Eflin (4-2, 3.43 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Tanner Roark (3-7, 3.87)

Eflin extended his unbeaten streak to three at Milwaukee last Saturday when he allowed one run on three hits and one walk with six strikeouts over five innings. The 24-year-old Floridian has limited six of his eight opponents this season to two or fewer earned runs and walked just one each in his last five outings. Eflin, who faces Washington for the first time in his career, is 2-1 with a 3.29 ERA in five road starts in 2018.

Roark permitted four runs on eight hits and two walks at Toronto on Sunday, but earned a no-decision to avoid his second straight setback. The 31-year-old Illinois native owns 10 quality starts in his 14 starts this year, including May 5 when he held Philadelphia to three runs over 6 1/3 innings in a loss. Herrera is 13-for-31 with five doubles versus Roark, who is 6-7 with a 3.98 ERA in his career against the Phillies.

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington RF Bryce Harper was 1-for-1 with two walks and a sacrifice fly Thursday from the leadoff spot after going 2-for-32 in his previous nine games.

2. Philadelphia placed INF J.P. Crawford (hand) on the 10-day disabled list, recalled INF Mitch Walding from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and optioned RHP Jake Thompson to the same affiliate.

3. Nationals 3B Anthony Rendon is 9-for-19 with five runs, four doubles and four RBIs during a five-game hitting streak after homering Thursday.

Preview: Diamondbacks at Pirates
Gracenote
Jun 22, 2018

Outfielder Jon Jay has proved to be a valuable pickup and looks to continue his latest hot streak when the Arizona Diamondbacks visit the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night for the second of a four-game set. Jay, who was acquired from Kansas City on June 6, had a pair of hits along with two RBIs in Thursday’s 9-3 victory while improving to 17-for-38 in his last nine games after going hitless in his first 12 at-bats with Arizona.

Five-time All-Star Paul Goldschmidt also knocked in a run for the Diamondbacks on Thursday and has been on a tear this month with 29 hits in 64 at-bats over the last 16 games with eight homers and 20 RBIs in that stretch. Left-hander Patrick Corbin goes after his seventh win for National League West-leading Arizona and will face righty Ivan Nova, who can build a three-game winning streak for the first time in 2018. Pittsburgh has dropped back-to-back contests after running off four victories in five games to reach the .500 mark and is 1-5 in its last six against the Diamondbacks - dating back to last season. Rookie outfielder Austin Meadows had three hits in Thursday’s loss and is 6-for-14 over his last four contests for the Pirates to raise his batting average to .340.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FS Arizona, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (6-3, 3.48 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Ivan Nova (4-5, 4.42)

Corbin has struggled in his last two starts, allowing 10 runs on 15 hits and five walks across 11 1/3 innings with a total of 12 strikeouts. The 28-year-old New Yorker surrendered three or fewer runs in his first eight starts of 2018 and accomplished that feat just three times in his last seven outings, losing three of his past five decisions. Gregory Polanco is 4-for-8 with a homer versus Corbin, who is 1-2 with a 5.90 ERA in five career games against the Pirates.

Nova was victorious in his last two appearances, permitting one run in each while allowing nine hits and five walks combined with 11 strikeouts over 11 2/3 innings. The 31-year-old Dominican had lost his previous four decisions over a five-start stretch, yielding 20 earned runs across 23 2/3 innings combined. Goldschmidt is 4-for-9 with two homers and a double against Nova, who is 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA in three career starts versus Arizona.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pittsburgh CF Starling Marte recorded his 800th hit along with the 300th RBI of his career Thursday and is batting .339 all time against Arizona.

2. Arizona optioned RHP Matt Koch to Triple-A Reno on Thursday and recalled RHP Jake Barrett.

3. Pirates 3B Colin Moran has hit safely in eight consecutive games with a pair of homers and four RBIs in that stretch.

Preview: Mariners at Red Sox
Gracenote
Jun 21, 2018

The Boston Red Sox struggled to score runs for most of their road trip but come home on a high note after breaking out with the bats and avoiding a sweep at Minnesota on Thursday. The Red Sox will try to keep that momentum going at home when they host the Seattle Mariners in the opener of a three-game series on Friday.

Boston dropped four of the last six on a 10-game trip, including two in Seattle, and failed to score more than two runs in half of those 10 contests but made an exception on Thursday when Mookie Betts and Andrew Benintendi homered among 16 hits in a 9-2 rout. "We needed some guys to swing it," Betts told reporters. "We got some guys rolling and we hit with some guys on base, so, yeah, we did a good job today." The Mariners did not get off to a great start on a brutal trip through the American League East and were swept in three games at the New York Yankees. Seattle is hoping to keep Wade LeBlanc undefeated when he goes up against Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright on Friday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH Wade LeBlanc (3-0, 2.63 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Steven Wright (2-1, 1.23)

LeBlanc is 3-0 with a 2.06 ERA in nine starts since joining the rotation and had no trouble shutting down Boston at home on Saturday. The veteran struck out nine and did not walk a batter while scattering two hits across 7 2/3 scoreless innings to earn his third win. LeBlanc, who is making his second career start at Fenway Park, has yet to allow more than three runs in a start.

Wright put together his third straight outstanding start on Saturday while going up against LeBlanc but came out on the losing end of the 1-0 final. The knuckleballer held Detroit and Baltimore scoreless in his first two starts after joining the rotation but surrendered his first run as a starter on five hits in seven innings at Seattle. Wright worked at least 6 2/3 innings in each of his first three starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners OF Guillermo Heredia is 0-for-14 over his last eight games.

2. Betts is 5-for-10 in the last two games after going 3-for-18 in the previous five contests.

3. Seattle placed RHPs Juan Nicasio (knee) and Dan Altavilla (elbow) on the 10-day disabled list on Thursday.

Preview: Athletics at White Sox (Game 2)

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Oakland), NBCS Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Chris Bassitt (0-2, 2.45 ERA) vs. White Sox RH Lucas Giolito (4-7, 7.19)

Bassitt, who is making his third start of the season for Oakland, is just 2-13 all-time in 31 career appearances (25 starts). The 29-year-old lasted just four innings in his last outing as he gave up six runs - two earned - and seven hits in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels. Bassitt came away without a decision in his lone career start against the White Sox after allowing four runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 frames on April 5, 2016.

Giolito has dropped three of his last four decisions and has an unsightly 8.75 ERA over his past five outings. The 23-year-old has served up seven homers during the stretch after allowing just four over his first nine turns. Giolito, who never has faced Oakland, has struggled at home as he is 1-4 with a 11.05 ERA in seven starts at Guaranteed Rate Field.

WALK-OFFS

Preview: Yankees at Rays
Gracenote
Jun 21, 2018

The New York Yankees moved in front of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East this week by pulling off a dramatic three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners and are showing no sign that they have any interest in slipping back to the pack. The Yankees will try to record their 18th win in 22 contests and fifth straight when they kick off a six-game road trip by visiting the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.

New York recovered from a 5-0 deficit to walk off with a 7-5 win on Wednesday and smashed a pair of first-inning homers to spark a 4-3 win in Thursday's finale, bringing the club to 50 wins. "We've obviously played well and racked up a lot of wins, but you also realize every night how precious those wins are and how hard they are to come by, I don't care who we're playing," Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters. "But when you look at it, it is, I think, gratifying to know that we've played pretty well against some of the elite teams and some of the hot teams. I think it just speaks to what we believe our team is capable of, and the confidence these guys have no matter who the opponent is." The Rays are not playing quite as well against teams at the top of the standings and are 2-5 while playing New York and Houston over the last seven games. Tampa Bay will try to grab the upper hand on Friday behind right-hander Ryne Stanek while the Yankees send lefty CC Sabathia to the mound.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, WPIX (New York), FS Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees LH CC Sabathia (4-2, 3.30 ERA) vs Rays RH Ryne Stanek (1-1, 2.21)

Sabathia absorbed a loss at home against Tampa Bay on Sunday, when he was charged with three runs on 10 hits over 7 2/3 innings. The 37-year-old, who struck out a season-high 10 in the loss on Sunday, allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last four outings. Sabathia made two starts at Tropicana Field last season and won both while yielding a total of one earned run and seven hits across 10 innings.

The Rays continue to go the unconventional route by using a reliever in a starting role, and Stanek made that plan look smart the last time he made a start. The 26-year-old needed just 11 pitches to record five outs before handing it over to Jonny Venters in a game Tampa Bay eventually lost to the Astros on Monday. Stanek worked a scoreless inning in relief the next night against Houston, giving him eight consecutive scoreless appearances.

WALK-OFFS

1. Yankees OF Brett Gardner (right knee) could return to the lineup on Friday and avoid a trip to the disabled list.

2. Tampa Bay CF Kevin Kiermaier (thumb) is 0-for-9 in two games since returning from a two-month absence.

3. New York RF Aaron Judge hit his 19th home run on Thursday, snapping a 10-game homer drought.

PREDICTION: Yankees 7, Rays 4
