With draft night trade the Sixers can put together a huge package to land Leonard

By trading Mikal Bridges to Suns the Sixers landed both Smith and the Miami Heat's 2021 first round unrestricted pick. Riley is going for rebuild in 2020. He is going to trade expiring contracts for draft picks. The Heat pick in 2021 should fall anywhere between 1-10. This puts the Sixers in a position to package the pick along with players to have a shot at Leonard. Will it be enough. It's hard to say. Boston can put together a similar package.
They own Kings pick in the 2019 draft. Does Leonard want to go to Sixers or Celtics. Will he be willing to sign a long term contract or will he leave after one year to go LA.

What you are saying about the Heat is a big presumption. Why would they tank/rebuild in the exact season that they have to give away their pick? Seems unlikely.

Celts would likely beat Philly offer if he has eyes for anywhere other than LA.

Pat Riley is in his 70's and is stubborn. Why would he want to rebuild and give away an unprotected draft pick for 2021?

Riley is trying to get rid of Whiteside's and Tyler Johnson's bad contracts

There's just so much fluidity/moving parts/variables with all that stuff right now. Will be more clarity in like 10 days.

Sounds like Kawhi is rather hellbent on living in LA but who knows.

It is interesting that the 76ers would draft 3 guards when they already have Simmons, McConnell, Bayless, and Fultz all under contract for next season. It may have gone unnoticed but two of the 3 guards they drafted attended college in Texas.

It's incredible that unprotected pick came from the Goran Dragic trade in 2015. What Riley didn't know at the time was the end of the one and done rule which might make the 2021 draft a combination of players who had to go to college for the one year and high school players. This would create a bigger pool of talent. If Pop does trade Leonard to Sixers will he even be around when the 2021 pick kicks in. He could very well retire in the next two years or take some executive position in the NBA offices. Brown has been talking up that Fultz who has been working Drew Hanlen and has made drastic improvements to the point where his shot is back to what it was before he was having problems. Fultz would be one of the key players moved if they can trick San Antonio in taking him along with Saric and the 2021 pick.

Was wondering the same thing about why the Heat would trade an unprotected pick if they were going to rebuild. Then I realized that the Heats #1 pick is coming from Phoenix in the trade. So it's not Riley trading the pick, he didn't own that pick anymore. So it makes no difference to him if they are rebuilding.

I wouldn't say it makes no difference. It is embarrassing for a team to give up a top 5 pick. Look at the Nets, they gave up 2 top 3 picks and then made a bunch of short-term moves just so they could win a few more games last year and the pick could be 8th.

It's possible it will be a really high pick but most teams/GM's don't want to give another team a very high pick and will try to avoid doing so if they can. Even if it isn't necessarily the correct move for their team (i.e taking on bad contracts like the Nets did with Alan Crabbe to win a few extra games last year)

The HEAT have no plans to rebuild. Especially since its a waste to tank the next 2 years if they have no top pick in 2021. They are stuck in no mans land where they are not good enough to compete for a championship but not bad enough to be a crappy team. They are a lower seeded playoff team in the eastern conference.

Riley traded 3 number 1 picks to PHX to acquire Dragic (who was on last year of contract). Riley is known for trading away number 1 picks as they are used as "assets" for him. He's been with the HEAT since 1995 and has only had 1 good lottery pick ever (D Wade). Everybody else has been "just an asset". The only time they actually tanked a season was the season where they landed the #2 pick and drafted Michael Beasley (who wasnt good his first 2 yrs on team before they traded him for a 2nd rd pick the nite they got Lebron).

Riley was even offered 4 number 1 draft picks from the celtics a few years ago but drafted Winslow instead.

Riley is known for landing big studs in trades (Zo and Shaq) or making undrafted players very good NBA players (whiteside, haslem, many more).

The HEAT are stuck in some crappy contracts right now (whiteside/tyler johnson/waiters) so no clue what they do for next 2 season but not gonna tank.

When Philly receives that pick from Phx (via the heat), that pick should be anywhere from the 10th to the 20th pick

One thing I always find dumb is when you hear talking heads and even former GM's say "You don't trade a guy of that caliber within the conference"

Who cares? 95% of the time you should just get what you deem as the best deal possible. You likely aren't going to compete for a championship in the next 2-3 years anyway with a player like that going out. Just get the best deal possible, pretty irrelevant if it makes a team better that you play 4 times a year instead of 2 times a year.

I can see not trading within the division in football (i.e lets say the Bills make a slightly better offer for JimmyG than the 9ers) but in basketball it is a pretty dumb concept.

If you're a contending team in the conference then it is a bit of a different story like with the Cavs/Celtics Kyrie Irving deal but that's a different situation that falls into the other 5%.

If you are rebuilding, then who cares where goes? U just want the most in return for your pick. However if you still plan on contending, you would like to trade the guy out of your conference as you dont want to face him in a 7 game series. Probably why the spurs dont want to trade Kawai to LA and would prefer Boston (great trade chips)

There is a place inbetween contending and rebuilding called just being pretty good. That's about where the Spurs will be if they deal Kawhi.

If that's the case, I wouldn't care about him being in the same conference too much. If you're a lower seeded team then you are likely going to have to face a good team regardless. You just gotta get the most you can, it's already bad enough that you never get a full dollar back from trading a player of that caliber. You just gotta evaluate each offer for what it is.
